Sheera was right about it being a great sacrifice-for-appearances themed episode. Beyond the obvious makeup stuff - they start with Maomao showing 100% perfect, almost excessive manners tasting before emperor, and animate all the intricate movement well, esp in her hiding the actual eating/chewing. Next they show us her eating normally next to servant girl, and finally feeding the Lady, just pushing food into her mouth, she outright says, 'there is no time for manners'

If this is historically accurate, the makeup they were using on Lady Lihua was made with white lead. So yeah, REAL BAD for your health. And seeing Maomao just beat their ignorance down with knowledge was legendary. This is honestly one of my favorite shows this season.

So happy to see Roshi notice how good the animation was this episode! The animation director this episode is "chinashi" who's known for his style and character animation. He worked on the Frieren OP as well as Mob Psycho 100 III EP 8 (the alien episode), and is close friends with the animator who made the Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1 OP, sharing a similar style. It frustrated me so much to see people say that this episode had a "downgrade" in animation, because they can't tell the difference from pretty stills.

Ascendance of Bookworm is an anime that gave me a similar relaxing/therapeutic vibe from watching.
