This show is easily digestible with it's sub plots while also allowing room for tidbits of character development and unraveling the politics behind these Games of Yams. Also, in retrospect, I'm now thinking the emperor purposefully turned down ol' girl who recently left with her boo because he knew her backstory and respected it. You know it's actually kind of weird that large bewbies are such a talking point for the show, since during this era having a small chest was the beauty standard. Women would literally bind their chest to make it appear smaller. Most of the concubine clothing was tight around that area to create a flattening/binding effect.

The weekly mystery subplots leading into the overall plot is definitely flames 🔥 and right up my alley. As a person with freckles I was slightly taken aback by Maomao using fake ones to pose as unattractive I think they suit her . It's interesting I remember a couple years ago actually pretty recently there was a trend where people were putting on fake freckles in a positive light I guess eye of the beholder and all that.

usually in these times, the only way for a concubine to secure her position is to have a son and him be named crown prince. even then her son can just get murdered and then all the other concubines will race to have a son all over again. (that's why in the beginning everyone was saying Lihua was more favorable; it's also why sis was so worried about her son dying bc she could also lose her position). to truly secure her position the concubine would have to be the mother of the emperor and that would make her the "mother" of the nation, in other words, the most powerful woman in the country.... I wouldn't be surprised if Roshi is onto something with his theory at the end regarding Gyoukyou, but instead of her taking over (because this world is so patriarchal) she would have to first bear a son and make sure he was named crown prince. then she'd be free to murk the emperor lol

He was probably wanting her to open up about it on her own. Initiating conversations about one’s past is a sign of trust, especially in environments rife with court politics and high potential for backstabbing. Asking about it now is just a sign of how genuinely baffled he was that someone would go to those lengths to not appear as beautiful as they are, but there are times when you’d want someone you’re interested in to share that of their own accord. Especially when you’re someone like Jinshi, who can get people to pretty much do anything with a smile.
