Have been rewatching TYBW recently and it's so crazy how you can definitely see how Ichigo grew up as reckless as he is. This man had two daredevils who would never let somebody die before them as parents.

Ichigo’s mother is a Quincy who was infected by a synthetic/artificial Hollow while his father is a Soul Reaper, which makes him a unique being as ‘Quincy Vizard FullBring Soul Reaper’, in that order, One that has never had a true Shikai or Bankai, until now. It’s been awhile since I read the manga so idk if they ever explained this, but I still don’t know and wanna know why/how Ichigo and his sisters survived the selection process when their mom didn’t. Still doesn’t make sense to me. Cause technically they are all impure quincies.

It’s not the selection process that directly killed her. Ichigos mom only died because she was facing a hollow at the time the selection process happened. If she was at home or anywhere else she would still be alive.

Apparently cause that’s the way Kubo wanted it and told the Director to aggressively cut any comedic gag scenes out for the sake of the overall tone. It’ll hopefully and most likely be added in the BDs.

The selection process has an iffy side effect where some people die when their powers are taken and some people survive it. It's a luck of the draw type of deal depending on the person and there's really no explanation for it, nor is it something to get hung over by. It is what it is. It's like being sick. Some people can live through it and some really can't handle it and die. Think of it like that when he steals back his powers from them.

My headcanon for this is that the sisters may not have inherited enough/any quincy powers in the first place (or they just straight up survived the selection process since it's not inherently fatal). Ichigo is a special case since he's a quad-breed so it may not have been possible for Ywach to rip his powers out.

From what we saw this episode the selection process directly killed Uryu's mom because she was frail. Basically if you're in bad health and had to go through that selection you're more than likely going to die.
