If you've watched the latest DF Direct, you'll know that Alex worked hard to get this one out ASAP - before the next patch. The file is LARGE, so HEVC will take some time to complete. In the meantime though, here you go.

It's impossible to produce the usual DF-style PC tech review for The Last of Us Part 1 because the port launched in a bad state and hotfixes are arriving rapidly - any review would be out of date very quickly. In this video, Alex, John and Rich play the game on two sets of PC hardware, up against the PS5 version in performance mode. We isolate the key issues and highlight how the game needs to improve.

Eric Benoit

Needed a PS Triple version on a CRT as a 4th member.

d0x360

its crazy, I'll drop from 120 to 60 for no obvious reason. That's maxed out settings on a 4090 (+13% core oc), 5800x @ 5.44ghz on my game cores (4 best cores, game set to use those first), 32 gigs DDR4 CL14-14-14-34 1T @ 4000mhz and the game is on G4 Samsung 980 Evo, Windows is on a sabrent rocket and my swap is on some SATA3 SSD's in raid 1. I have resizable bar enabled & I have defended and all the protections it has like controlled flow guard disabled on the game. I think it's the shadows and lighting system because it seems like when grass is involved it gets slow but I havent tested much and haven't watched this yet but the port is...well weird.

I like this style of video but I felt I was missing some context about what the actual issues are with the PC port.. I mean I'm sure I could find the information online but I think a lot of people would go into a video like this pretty blank, they'd want to hear about the issues from DF :)

From my understanding of watching the video there are high requirement specs (higher than the official sheet) that are not even acceptable. The game has on anything lower than high bad textures for the resolution and rigs most gamers have got. To that you can add that the background streaming of assets of the core game has been offloaded to the cpu which during gameplay makes drops unavoidable unless you wait 50 seconds every new space you enter. Other issues have missing lighting, random glitches, bizzarly long load times, the longest shader precompilation times and the hardware being completely crushed with 100% utilization most of the time because of the previous and/or causing them.

VRAM utilization is sky high so you might need 10 or 12 gigs to start talking but that is scratching the surface the port is too compromised

Would rather play at high settings and be over on vram with a lower fps.
