Hi everyone - a day later than usual owing to the Easter break - here is your update on everything that's happening at Digital Foundry. It's going to be a bit of a weird week in terms of new #content owing to two short working weeks in succession but here's what we've got coming up for you:

  • Oliver joined us for the Direct last week and had prepared some material for us to discuss the Dragon's Dogma 2 patch. So much material that we came to the conclusion that we should do a standalone video covering all platforms, with Alex supplying new PC footage (small hint above!). There are interesting - but also some disappointing - changes here. His 'RT on Steam Deck' video was put on hold to tackle this.

  • Tom is going to be covering the Stellar Blade demo now that it is out. Lots of good news about this one, not least that the usual complaints we have about Unreal Engine 4 don't seem to apply to this one.

  • John is spending the week completing his latest major DF Retro episode, tackling the history of Sunsoft - a company he visited back in Japan last year. I've spent some time looking over the first 40 minutes and it's a treat! This one will deploy first to DF Retro supporters, but we want to deliver this one publicly a lot more quickly than we did with the Road Rash episode!

  • Alex is looking at PresentMon 2.0 this week. Whether this will lead to an actual video remains to be seen, but we are excited by the data it offers and we are looking to significantly upgrade our PC tools to support this. PresentMon 2.0 itself has on-screen visualisations, but having looked at the Gamers Nexus Dragon's Dogma 2 video, we think that the various graphing needs to be more easy to 'parse', so part of Alex's remit here is to consider how to use all of this new data with a view to revamping our custom graphing. At the same time, I also want to radically upgrade our own visualisations for GPU/CPU reviews based on this data so Alex's feedback here will be invaluable. If this work doesn't lead to #content, we'll definitely be talking about it in DF Direct Weekly.

  • Rich (ie me) is still working steadily on the next handhelds video amongst my other various tasks. Today that included two meetings, updating DF Clips for the next week (effectively prepping 14 videos then), writing the Eurogamer news post about Immortals of Aveum's upcoming frame generation support and then writing this! I'm looking to complete the handhelds video this week as beyond that, further tasks are stacking up.

Do let us know if you have any further ideas for #content we should be looking at or if anything has fallen in between the cracks, but for now I hope that you all have a good, short week (in locations where that is applicable!). Thanks as always for your support!

While you're upgrading the visuals, could you perhaps also lay down the law on what hardware goes on which side, in side-by-side comparisons? In some of the videos it changes back and forth. :)

Hello DF! Regarding the current handheld space: Have you guys looked into the PS Portal micro stuttering issue? In your Portal review you made a remark on stuttering being present even though using an all wired setup with a PC. Turns out, this might be a frame pacing issue with the Remote Play -client. That is why the Portal suffers from periodic stuttering. Wish you guys could check out r/playstationportal stickied post by user Parasupaman. Extensive testing and conversation on the matter there.

This is partially addressed in the latest DF Direct Weekly. A lot of the stuttering tests have been done by using the PC client - and in the Direct I highlight how much of the stutter (perhaps not all) is caused by Windows. So whether those findings apply to the Portal remains to be seen.
