Yeh, 'Mr Whippy' is a reference to the ice cream. Last time I watched this was with the commentary on and they were saying by the end "You're on Alan's side now aren't you, because they're just being twats." referring to the fashion people. (If I was Alan I definitely would've made Glen a sacked man, too.)

You might have heard 'Mr Whippy' on the Peter Kay Icecream man cometh clip you did before where he has an ice cream van. But I suppose it could have been brought up in a couple of shows you've done too 🍦

Unless I'm very much mistaken, model Newman was the insane super-Kryten (Hudson 10) from Red Dwarf 3.6 - The Last Day ("You are all viable targets")

Just heard that Angela Lansbury died, her name was mentioned in an earlier episode, it was the name that was dubbed over Jessica Tandy who had just died shortly after the episode was made.

No I'm not

It was me that mentioned the sign, well remembered! There were signs, they were on the sides but they were slightly different - they had Alan’s and Nina’s names, but Alan’s was massive and Nina’s tiny

Kieran B

The motto on his blazer badge coat of arms says ‘Knowing me, aha, knowing you’ in Latin. Laughed when you pointed it out that was a distributor cap knowing that joke was coming

So it was Gordon Kennedy in Red Dwarf of 'Absolutely' fame. (I never realised that. Obvious in hindsight.) I can't find any credits for Newman in this episode (except possibly as himself: somebody called Newman). It really does look like GK though.

I assumed the sign was lost with his furniture because of the French customs people. (Although I hadn't noticed it getting bigger until Josh talked about it here.)

I like the way Alan asked if she drived a Ford Mondeo after he noticed it. Like she would be up on the latest Ford model.

A few things: Peter Ustinov was an actor famous for telling entertaining and long anecdotes on chat shows. He became more famous for being a raconteur than an actor. Derrida is a deconstructionist philosopher, life is way too short to learn anything more about the absolute balls he spouted. The fashion designer is heavily based on a famous British fashion designer called Vivenne Westwood. Infamously she once went on morning TV in the UK to show off her latest(pretty crazy) designs, and got visibly angry when the audience started laughing at how ridiculous they were. I think she said to the host something like "can you tell them to stop laughing or I'm leaving." I'd link to the clip because it's quite funny, but I can't.

Mad Cow Disease was a deadly disease that affected British beef in the 80s and 90s. We ended up having to slaughter 4 million of the big milky sods because of it and British beef was banned for quite a long time from many countries. If you ate and contracted the human variant you died in a horrible fashion, your brain and spinal cord dissolving like a sugar cube in the shower. That's Nina's reference to 'your mad cows'. I don't actually know what the 'rabid dogs' reference Alan makes is about. I even googled it and couldn't find anything. It might just have been a case that happened to be in the news that week, not sure, or maybe France has some reputation for having a lot of rabies cases? 🤷‍♂️

Josh

Great reaction, thanks for the upload :-)

According to IMDb the model Matt (with the corn plasters) is Christopher Morris. It does look a bit like him but I can't believe it actually is.

Anyone who lived in the UK between 1990 and 1996 for more than three months still isn't allowed to give blood in the US because of mad cow. It's cool knowing at any moment my brain and spinal cord could dissolve like a sugar cube in the shower

Saul

Yes, sorry to spring it on you. Just keep an eye on your brain and spine.

I found the clip for you. Lookup "Wogan Russell Harty Viv Westwood JSP" on YouTube. Thank you for mentioning this clip, as I'd never seen it before and it's a hoot! Also, yes, it's very clearly the inspiration for that particular Alan Partridge skit.

Saul

Nice, thanks RSB. I'd forgotten it was Wogan. She handled it a bit better than I remembered but the designs really were absurd. The male model who suddenly emerged in a kilt, prancing around doing pirouettes, was sillier than anything on KMKY.

Colin Bayley

The rabies mention was because Britain had been rabies free for over a century. With the channel tunnel opening one of the scare stories going round was that it was going to lead to a resurgence of the disease over here.
