Btw I don’t think the ending was the worst thing ever like some people might think. I do however feel like the very ending kind of undermines eren’s motivations throughout the past episodes of season 4.

Mufid Lassissi

Lee disappointing me. Eren > lelouch. Lelouch solves the worlds problem because he dies . Unrealistic childish crap. Eren had lots of layers. But if he killed his friends to do the rumbling? Who tf was he doing it for ? He was dying soon anyway

Stevetheiguana

Determinism undermines everyone's character motivations because if everything is fated to be, then all of your actions will yield the same results in the end, hence nothing really matters. It's very nihilistic. Isayama wrote himself into a corner though with all the time manipulation mechanics, especially with Eren being able to control any titan throughout history. Determinism is his narrative way of shooing away the "what if" questions.

Badmon speakin facts! After reading the manga ending, I hoped for Mappa to keep Eren's character intact and coherent where Isayama (the author) fell off. It would have been much more cathartic for Eren to either be killed as a bonafide villain by his friends (maybe a callback to "if someone threatens my freedom, I won't hesitate to take it away from them" the other way around) or let him end humanity outside of the walls (plus the alliance), only to live in anguish with the hellish memories as toll for the safety of Paradis. Either way would have hit harder in my opinion.

Stevetheiguana

Eren could have just erased the memories of the Eldians so they'd forget the rumbling even existed. No alliance to stop him then lol. Couldn't do that to Levi and Mikasa, but if they were the only ones who knew, it's more of a stretch for them to convince the others to stop Eren, particularly Mikasa. Since founder powers are god like and super OP, if he REALLY wants to be sure, could just put everyone into a coma and crystallize them temporarily like Annie was lol. Unfreeze them after it's done.

Lelouch’s sacrifice was literally a Christ-like moment, it doesn’t need to be realistic, the message of one man sacrificing his own life to save the entire world from bloodshed is a strong one

Most of my gripes with the ending summarized here. Apologies for the length lol. Could go more into depth, but I’ll keep it at this. • Eren’s character - He was retconned in the finale/chapter 139. Agree with him or not, he was the epitome of determination and willpower to achieve his goals no matter the cost. Eldia WAS backed into a corner and appeared to have a binary choice of it’s either they all die or we all die. As messed up as the rumbling is, the reasoning for it at least made sense. Then you have Eren talking to Armin saying things like ehh, Idk why I did it anymore, but I just wanted to see this sight so bad, and I’d do it again, but idk what for, whoopsie. On top of that also saying that he tried to change things, but the future can’t be changed, which gets into determinism which I’ll get to later. Finally, the big meme scene of Eren breaking down about Mikasa to Armin. A lot of reactors I saw enjoyed this scene because they said it was great to see Eren be vulnerable, it was back to S1-S3 Eren, and that the entire S4 Eren was just a facade. Literally the special episode before the finale, Eren was crying his eyes out to Ramzi, so it’s not like he hadn’t been emotional at all in S4. Pre-time skip Eren was not as big of a cry baby as people are trying to claim. He cried when people he cared about were dying or when he felt completely useless trying to save people, or when he himself was on the verge of death or had given up like he had in S3 in the caves. It’s not the fact that he cried, it’s what he was crying about, and how he was saying it. The series did NOT build up Eren and Mikasa whatsoever to make this ship be so prominent. Early series Eren would often push Mikasa away, and would appear visibly annoyed by her. Isayama himself years ago in an interview said that Eren views Mikasa as more of a big sister or motherly type figure. I could buy Eren crying about leaving his friends behind, but to break down like that over Mikasa, and not want her to move on? Was jarring and didn’t fit narratively. People claim “oh he’s just 19” to excuse it, like this guy didn’t just murder 80% of humanity, hasn’t been a child soldier slaughtering both people and titans for years. He killed two men when he was what, like 8? Eren was never a normal kid. Eren’s S4 personality being a facade is a retcon. You’re telling me this guy who was cutting off his own leg and jamming a bullet into his eye socket just to deceive people to help achieve his ultimate goals, was just faking it all this time? That’s the act of a whiny immature child who’s just faking acting tough? Nah, that’s absurd. Of course his talk with Armin and Mikasa in S4 saying how he hated her etc was a facade, but to say EVERYTHING was? That’s a huge stretch. • Determinism - Eren’s actions are also excused away when he says that he tried to change things, but the future couldn’t be changed, everything HAD to be this way. This is further confirmed by him telling Armin that he HAD to sick Dina on his mom to save Berthold. Ok, but why though? You’re telling me you can control ANY titan in history, wouldn’t it have been better to save your mom and have Dina eat Berthold? Now you get rid of a key enemy, and have a titan shifter with royal blood that much earlier. You could have turned away all the titans to save your mom and the others. Eren was already motivated to join the scouts before the titans even attacked, and he didn’t have to have his mom get eaten for motivation either. This takes away the aspect of free will and choice, and serves to remove character motivations from not just Eren, but everyone else as well. If everything you do is pre-determined, and nothing you do can change that, then nothing you do really has any meaning does it? Your actions will never change a preset outcome. Isayama HAD to implement something like this because of his time manipulation mechanics he introduced. For example, Grisha begged Zeke to stop Eren, telling him he saw visions of the future (assuming the rumbling), and how horrible it was. If Grisha was that horrified by the rumbling, why did he do all those things for Eren? Why did he kill the Reiss family? Why did he proceed to give Eren the attack titan? If he never gave Eren his titan, Eren could never start the rumbling. Although that was such a great reveal when it happened, looking back, it takes away Grisha’s free will. Eren complains to Armin about not wanting to leave everyone behind, yet he never should have needed to. He has god powers pretty much with the founder and Ymir. He could have done a 100% rumbling, wiped memories of all Eldians so the alliance wouldn’t stop him, then return to the island and live out his life with Mikasa. If Ymir could have modified Eldians bodies to remove their reproductive capabilities through Zeke’s plan, removing the spinal fluid/titan curse would not be too much more of a stretch. Eren would then be the only one to suffer with knowledge of the rumbling, besides Levi and Mikasa, but they alone would have a harder time convincing the others to stop Eren. • Ymir - Having Ymir love King Fritz was a huge retcon and was completely unnecessary. Ymir’s story was pretty well covered before, and the narrative was clear that she had been treated horribly and had an extreme slave mentality that stuck with her all this time. This explained the dead eyes that you couldn’t see, and blindly following anything a royal would say. People like to say Stockholm syndrome, but that works better when your captor or abuser has shown ANY sort of kindness towards you at some point. For a series all about nuanced characters, King Fritz was one of the only irredeemable ones who was explicitly evil. When Ymir took the spear throw, Fritz was even surprised that she was letting herself die so easy, he’s like wtf get up. The titan shifters can heal pretty fast, but only if they have a strong enough will to live, as seen with Reiner in S4. Why would Ymir let herself die so easily if she loved Fritz so much? Why did she die and leave her kids behind? This all makes sense if Ymir was terrified of Fritz and lived as a slave in fear her whole live, to the point where death was seen as the only escape. Why did Eren’s words of freedom mean so much to her if that wasn’t what freed her, but MIkasa? Even if this was all about “love”, why did it HAVE to be Mikasa to be the chosen one? The Eren-Mikasa and Ymir-Fritz parallel doesn’t even make sense. If all Ymir needed to stop slaughtering everyone with titans was to see an instance of a woman overcoming and moving on from a toxic or unhealthy relationship, why did it HAVE to be Mikasa? You’re telling me not a SINGLE woman has ever done anything like this in 2000 years? You don’t need her to be cutting off her love interest’s head to move on. • Mikasa - Most of my issues with her from the finale were covered in the Ymir section. I do believe they did this character dirty, as she never had any real character development past S1. Her character revolved entirely around Eren. Gotta save Eren, gotta protect, Eren Eren Eren. She was very one dimensional. The series teases you with her finally killing Eren, and “moving on”, only to say sike and have her live the rest of her life grieving for Eren and even dying with the scarf. I guess Eren kinda got his wish right • Historia - Imo the most developed female character in the entire show, and she gets sidelined for the entirety of S4. We get a whole sub-plot about her baby, people thinking that it was maybe going to be Eren’s or something, or at least something of importance, but nope! The baby was the farmer’s all along. Why did we spend so much time on this baby from a dude we never met? Only Ymir knows I suppose. • Annie - The only warrior who was shown to have been enjoying killing the scouts, and there’s no real redemption or even addressing it. I didn’t need to have them kill her off or anything, but everyone just kinda forgot like oh hey she’s cute, look she’s eating pie! Oh hey let’s turn her into a waifu for Armin, because why not? Why was Levi so determined to kill Zeke, but he doesn’t say a word to Annie about killing his entire squad in S1? I get he made a promise to Erwin, but it seems out of character for him and everyone else to just forget about Annie like that. Would have at least liked some sort of bigger apology or something from Annie. • Final fight - Epic, amazing animation, MAPPA went hard, but it lacked weight and stakes. This was objectively the most insane fight in the whole series, and the alliance made it out with the only damage being Levi’s leg. That’s some serious plot armor there. In the past, even a single titan shifter would cause serious issues for everyone. You’re telling me they’re fighting, what, like hundreds of them, and nobody gets hurt? Nobody dies? It did not feel like the gritty and gruesome fights of before, where everyone is getting killed off left and right, and no character is safe.

Thanos didn't try to genocide anyone, he was completely fair, funny though it sounds. Eren explicitly wanted to kill non eldians.

Yaboyrocklee

I understand logically why you say that but wiping out half the Universe? Also. Remember how he acquired stones lol. He destroyed various civilizations to do so, including the remnants of Agaurdians, the dwarf people who make weapons, and his daughters tribe specifically. He was then gonn wipe out all of earth specifically because the Avengers were trying to bring back people lol and it wasnt even his timeline lol.

lewicy

Damn, Im actually impressed Lee. A lot of people get shitted on for saying that they didnt like the ending so respect for speaking your mind. In my opinion the ending just didnt deliver. Ending just dumps a lot of info on us at the last minute and we are just supposed to accept it for what it is. Eren was actually an idiot and his actions were the only option because paths/determinism bullshit? He suddenly starts crying over mikasa? Ymir actually needed Mikasa, not eren to free herself?? The remaining 20% of the world not having the capibility to enact revange on paradis in the next 1/2/5/10 years (during the lifespan of the characters we care about) is just a lazy plot contrivance. To me it just looks like Isayama pulled the plug out at the last minute. He took away Eren's agency and made him look pitable to get people to still like him as a ''tragic and misguided'' character. And the only way 80% plan works is if the remaining 20% doesnt immediately kill the rest of the cast and/or doest bomb paradis to oblivion(which should happen lets not kid ourselves, but that would make the audience hate the ending), the images we see at the end show that there is some kind of conflict in the distatnt future happening but since the peolpe we care about are long dead the audience wont care, the will say ''conflcit never ends, its human nature'' and will think its so profound.

Yaboyrocklee

Yeah that’s pretty much my thoughts. I think it’s a dope episode But as it marinated I started feeling unsatisfied. And like I said it didn’t help that I immediately saw a season finale for Loki. ….. And just started thinking the writer could’ve done better .. I won’t go campaign to shit on it though.
