Courtesans did not have to partake in sex work, if they have really great skills. This can include playing instruments, playing go and shogi really well or just being really great conversationalists and storytellers. Think of modern day hosts in Japan for example, they have to entertain guests and the really successful ones receive exorbitant amounts of money just from spending an hour of two entertaining other people. Also, courtesans that remain virginal tended to have a higher value during those times and would be worth a lot more.

Courtesans seemingly don’t necessarily have to have sex. All are at least known for their beauty and sex appeal, but it isn’t as simple as prostitute. More like escort/stripper where you could just talk and spend time with them and enjoy there art (we have seen them do singing, dancing and music) but most for the right price you could pay to have sex with.

Definitely on the train of thinking the courtesan is maomao's mom. But i feel like there is more than meets the eye with this Lakan guy. It's almost like he wants to give off this sense of arrogance to pull more info from Jinshi (which would be right on brand with him being a military strategist). It's like the way they're setting him up is for us to want to hate him, but maybe that's not the case? I think he's trying to subtlely move into the light with everything that's going on (since he's appeared in at least 2 of the incidents that have occured) but playing his cards close to his chest. And yes I noticed him and mao mao have preeeeetty similar eye colors. I'd have thought nothing of it if it wasn't for the fact that Jinshi and old girl had the same eye colors too....very interesting, THE PLOT THICKENS!

Especially since Maomao clearly has same shade of hair color as the courtesan & same shade of blue eyes as him (I assume they intentionally focused on his eyes because of that? Kinda like how they focused on the new consort Loulan's eyes at multiple times, so we prolly have to keep an eye on her eyes or w/e as well in the future)

So here's my theory, Lakan and Maomao's father were into the same courtesan at which is Maomao's mother. Both individuals working at the palace could bid a high amount of money for her, so even though the Apothecary guy is called Maomao's father i don't think he's actually her biological father. Reason being that you can't exactly work in the rear palace with the emperor's women are at, unless you're either an eunuch or in Jinshi's case related to the royal family, at this point he's the emperor's son unless the show says otherwise. So Lakan in order to lower the value of a courtesan who by all rights is still pure given that she only plays games with her cliental gave in to his dark desires to have her by forcing himself on her. Lakan succeed in lowering her value and impregnating her with Maomao, but failed to get both cause i don't think Verdigris house would look kindly on someone doing that to one of their highest and most valued courtesans. Thus Maomao's father got both the mother and the daughter, and Lakan is trying to get near Maomao again after all these years since he's probably banned from the redlight district or just can't get near her there.
