Powerup speed run go BRRR

Comments

Davon Thomas

The thing is if they had the one piece budget they'd have managed to do what they did. With the 45 minute or so episodes having a realisticish twist but maintaining the story. Which is why there won't be a Dark Tournament and team urameshi vs team toguro happens like this.

Johnwick

Spirit sword bro not that harf

Smash Bran'Discootch

I think you guys are under a misconception. They aren't doing the dark tournament. This *IS* their dark tournament arc.

Kumi Chan

Yo, any yu yu haksho anime watchers, is the anime recommended?

Hasnain Khan

Yehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

LiquidXGravity

Yes it is it's a great show you would have to get used to the old style animation.

Smash Bran'Discootch

So once again, powerups happening for literally no reason with no actual character development, reason, catalyst, or explanation as to why they haven't been using these powers the whole time. "Oh yeah, I've just been able to fully control the dragon of the darkness flame this whole time and I can just use it with a light singe to my arm." "Oh Yoko Kurama? Yeah I can do that any time I just promised I wasn't gonna." Like....this is not good storytelling. None of it was earned. Things just HAPPENED for no reason. They're like, "Story? Nah we don't need that. It's a battle Shonen, so it's all about the fights, right? Yeah we're just gonna do those and throw the story out." An adaptation is meant to deliver the story from one medium into another in order to bring the story to a whole new audience that doesn't care for the original medium. So in order to have a successful adaptation, you need to be able to convey that story. If you can't or don't convey that story, you have not created a successful adaptation. This is bad and the people who wrote it should feel bad.

Smash Bran'Discootch

For sure, the anime is fantastic. It's one of the few anime on my list where I actually even prefer the dub over the sub. It's definitely tropey, but the mangaka has a well of celebrating Shonen tropes while also turning them on their heads in an unexpected way. The first 5 or six episodes can be a little slow if you're going into it expecting a battle Shonen off rip. Are you familiar with HunterXHunter? If so, Yu Yu Hakusho was that mangaka's first big work.

Smash Bran'Discootch

My bad my dude, I left a while big ol' rant and I accidentally put it as a reply to your comment at first. 😅

The Endless

yeah but ppl are still gonna disingenuously hype it up and say its good just like the One Piece LA to join the bandwagon. So now netflix and these other companies actually think they're doing good even though they're still as subpar as every LA adaptation b4 it.

Smash Bran'Discootch

Right? And I never understood people who disingenuously hype things up(great way of putting it, btw!) Because like if people keep treating bad things like they're good, these companies are just going to keep churning out these mediocre, forgettable time-wasters.

Kevin

Roshi made a good point an episode or so ago, it’s possible they knew they weren’t gonna get a second season…but still!!!! Think people still would have loved it if they just slowed things down and maybe just covered all the events right before the dark tournament because seeing Karasu Bui Yoko Kurama and The Darkness flame was just too much. They could have just done the original toguro fight and it could have been just as good.

Kevin

Also Genkai literally just came and went, yall killed her off without even giving us time to care about her. And Toguro could have been more menacing, man used to have Yusuke shaking in his boots

13

I actually dont mind that they speedran the series right into this pseudo tournament arc. Im just here for some nice brainless fun, and the fights are definitely that.

ViralCorgi

Definitely. Particularly the dub. And I say that as a sub watcher. The dub just gives them way more personality and adds a lot of emotion.

ViralCorgi

"I could pick that up" **crickets** They could have at least humored you lmao 💀😂

Nita - Kento's Widow

I def agree that people would've have loved it if they let the story cook a little more. It's wild because the fights are done pretty well, it's just that they're rushing things and this is coming from someone who hasn't done a re-watch in years.

A. P.

"Sittin' there lookin like a walrus" 😂 lmao I almost choked on my damn pb&j sandwich bro I had to go get some milk lol

Anonymous

Roshi, you should watch Death Game on Prime Video. You guys will love it.

Kiran

death game one of the best shows hopefully they watch soon

ViralCorgi

Them giving Karasu the laid and slayed buss-down tatiana middle part 30-inch bundles, but giving my boy Kurama the Party City Halloween special deluxe wig will forever hurt me

Anonymous

Yeah! I wasn't expecting it to be this good. Korean shows and movies are top notch

Daylen

I didn’t mind the speedrun at first because it felt like this was a one-shot and after the 5 episodes there wasn’t gonna be a season 2 and because the fights scenes were done so well BUT it still hurts to see them turn such strong villains that could be considered mid to upper B rank in the anime into the fodder demons that were there for the original Yukina rescue😅🥲

Devin B

It's just the fact that it's an adaptation of a well known anime that some people are going to hype it up regardless. Obviously when you compare it to the anime you'll see the pacing and development are lackluster but it's definitely entertaining enough when you compare it to other attempts at live action anime, it's not on the level of the recent OP live action but still better than most adaptations.

Smash Bran'Discootch

Homie I legitimately admire your ability to see the best in things. Maybe I need to adopt some of your chill haha.

LiquidXGravity

They nerfed Yoko Kurama so hard

Alex

Please watch the anime

Devin B

Yeah they did, this was pretty much how the fight went in the anime except in the anime Kurama chose to revert back to his human form

Devin B

Lol bro don't get me wrong, overall I still hate how they're speedrunning the character development and pacing but aside from the plot it's not unwatchable

Devin B

It's one of the few anime where the dub is better than the sub. Definitely a must watch.

Kryptik _

When lupa mentioned “rowdy ruff boys”, I was like “HOLY SHIT, they do have the color scheme”

Delinda Arts

Everyone knows you spare the protagonists from the "mentor's sacrifice" for when it counts lmao Like how Gon was just cooking when Kite was clapped lmao

V

Curious, would Yu Yu Hakusho fair good with today's shonen? I loved watching the original as a kid, just wondering how it would par with modern anime

Jordan Postle

Seeing as to how modern Shonen took inspiration from Yu Yu I think it would fair good.

DarkGen95

I love how we're getting the Dark Tournament finals between the two teams and everything else in these 5 episodes.

Daylen

They nerfed everyone lol Karasu had a second form in the anime and Bui who had green battle aura that literally caused him to levitate and fly but instead he had some weird dark energy😭

Benji

I'm never watched nor read Yu Yu Hakusho, and I am LOVING how they have adapted it so far. It is flowing well. I bet its probably jarring for previous fans, but I am glad they have structured it this way. It now IMMEDIATELY make me more interested in the series in total. I am completely find with speed run towards mass power ups. It makes sense here. (Now if they did that in One Piece Live Action, it wouldn't have made sense LOL).

Smash Bran'Discootch

Except that Yusuke was THERE when it happened and Genkai died in his arms. Her last words telling him not to end up like Toguro was literally the central theme of this entire arc. None of that was present here. How they handled that scene alone is a microcosm of this entire shit show.

Doc Anime!

Dude its one season series! Get over it, they had 5 episodes to sum up YUYU and they did great with that they did. It's an adaptation not a 1 to 1 of the manga/anime.

Doc Anime!

I know some ppl wanted it to be an exact copy of the anime, but do y'all really think they could've done everything in season one & two live action and make it actually look good???

FreshxEli Tv

That dude in all black gave me As Kodt Vibes From Bleach 😭😭😭 Fuck That I Ain’t Fighting

Wolf

They could’ve spaced out the story arcs and saved some of this stuff for season 2. Taking the time to develop the character relations using the other arcs then having the Dark Tournament in S2 would’ve been perfect even if it wasn’t a 1-1 remake.

Wolf

Get over the fact that some people are gonna dislike the series. Not sure why you feel you need to shut down other peoples opinions because they don’t line up with yours.

Benji

relax lol. I acknowledge that for previous fans it is probably jarring for them to see it be speed run. But as non viewer of YuYu Hakusho, I personally feel they are doing an amazing job.

JsnSkg

Personally, I feel what matters most is entertainment. IS IT FUN? If yes, then mission accomplished. Nothing else matters to me. I had fun watching this adaptation. Sure, maybe three more episodes would've been better, but it's not the end of the world lmao. People acting like their entire lives are ruined because they didn't like how this adaptation was handled. CHILL. Your childhood is still intact, nothing went back in time and fucked with it. This is a TV show made for entertainment. Some liked it, some didn't. Neither is right or wrong. Just move on lol.

Aniki Pft

@Smash Bran'Discootch Bro I've seen you in the comments of every episode and no offense but you gotta chill. This live adaption is probably one of the better ones we've seen thus far, yes storyboarding issues and hella quick but again the question would be how can we make this engaging for the audience in 5 episodes, hell I doubt there'll even be a 2nd season. This is one of those things that would motivate people to check out the source material. Anime fans always seem to be pessimistic when it comes to things like this, literally ignoring anything that's redeemable or atleast good about it. You can't enjoy stuff if you're always so negative about it. We can admit it has issues or you may not like it, but you're genuinely ranting about people who may actual like this as a live adaption and nothing else. If we're talking about the world of anime live adaptions, I'm seeing great improvements especially compared to what we have gotten so far.

Aniki Pft

Right, I'm legitimately seeing people seethe about it when it's probably one of the better adaptions we've seen so far. Yes it has issues but I'm enjoying it.

Smash Bran'Discootch

Hey so you were pretty chill in your response, so i'm not going to fly off the handle at you. I do see your point. I mean, i disagree with it but I think that's more due to a difference in how we view the potential outcome of this adaptation. While you think that it will encourage people to check out the source material(i don't mean to put words in your mouth, just citing back what you said). To that, i would disagree citing the Death Note adaptation, the Fullmetal Alchemist adaptation, cowboy bebop, ghost in the shell, and many others. These were adaptations which took wild liberties that changed the original story into something that didn't even express the same central themes of the story. Exactly like the Yu Yu Hakusho live action did. A poor adaptation doesn't encourage people to check out the source material. It makes them say, "There is no way in hell i'm ever watching that." We cite the Once Piece adaptation and The Last of Us adaptation as being the top adaptations for their respective mediums. Why is this? Because while they did make some heavy changes in order to adapt the medium to a live action series, they both preserved the same story. Joel and Ellie go on a cross country tour to figure out the cordyceps hooplah. All of the important character and story beats were covered. One Piece. Luffy recruits the first several members of his crew, fight the cat pirates, deal with Arlong and head off to the grand line. Same thing happened in the manga and anime as in the live action adaptation. Yu Yu Hakusho. None of the story beats or character moments were preserved. Things just happen for no reason, with no context or explanation or anything. Characters act nothing like their original selves. Even the very basic structure of how abilities work is not preserved. If it were to encourage people to watch the source material because they enjoyed it, they would be disappointed when they watch the original and it's nothing like what they enjoyed in the adaptation. Because if the point really was to get new people interested, then they wouldn't have felt it necessary to include Team Toguro, Yoko Kurama, Dragon of the Darkness flame. They would have just made the 4 Saint Beasts arc which could easily have been done and done well in 5 episodes as an adaptation. A much shorter arc in a central location that is easy to film, has some heavy action set pieces, and some really important character growth moments that don't require nearly as much context in order to have the same impact. So i'm sorry, my dude. I respect your position, but I can't chill out on it. It's a really important story that they could have done well and they just chose not to.

Aniki Pft

@Smash BranDiscootch I appreciate the chill response and understand where you're coming from. As I stated before, in comparison to a lot of the other adaptions(like you mentioned excluding TLOU) I feel as if this managed to grab my attention unlike the others. It had it's enjoyable moments, even noticing how rocket fast everything is going but that's due to time limitations which they can't help. Who's to say someone who has never seen YuYu liked the live adaption and decided to check out the source material, that's usually how things work. To book to show, to anime to Manga, etc etc vise versa. You seem to be a heavy YuYu fan so of course you would be in opposite to how it was handled as I'm sure a lot of the long time fans are whilst there are those who saw like it was; a live adaption. It's one thing to say you don't like it which it fine, but if others like it that doesn't mean people are just settling for anything. That was my biggest issue with your comments, and again need I remind you everything had to be done within 5 episodes. Spending time fully developing characters and adjecting to a steady pace wouldn't have gauged some of the audience within such a short time(netflix is to blame). It's impossible to say someone wouldn't pick up the source material if they genuinely enjoyed the live action.

Arturo

Yeah I don't like that they killed Genkai like that 😒 I felt nothing
