The only thing I can think of is they were accounting for some margin of error. When launching something from the Moon to Earth, precision is gonna be difficult, so they must have thought some of them wouldn't make it or, worst-case-scenario, one of them slingshots around the earth back towards the Moon. Making the radius too big has a huge risk of friendly-fire.

I wonder what’ll happen now that we know someone’s on the moon and they can just send a bunch of these things to the surface. The time it would take for Senku and co. to reach the industrial age to even entertain the idea of making a rocket would be long, and during all that time I don’t doubt whoever’s on the Moon can observe the surface for signs of life. I imagine that any villages that exist in the present were either under the radar or missed by the observer; anyway, my thoughts are either 1) they’ll have to conceal themselves by going underground to make it harder to locate them or 2) the enemy is already dead and they’re actually facing some sort of AI or other program which specifically attacks humans (maybe some effort to keep the planet free from human pollution idk)

A simple explanation would be that the island village was developing fast which caught the attention of why man from space, So they tried to eliminate them but some people escaped to the sea and survived. Some of them went back while other went to mainland and founded Kohaku's village.

Can't say for certain but, I know I hate him BECAUSE he's an idiot and for this specifically he had ample time to leave with the Medusa rather than stick around with it trying to use what he should know full well he knows nothing about. I guess that result should be expected with him, he is an idiot after all, but it doesn't make it any less frustrating...
