To clarify (no spoilers), Maomao is not related to Fengming's family. The people who kidnapped/sold her have connections to Fengming's family and the "merchant family" was what Maomao was listed under. So she got fired because of the business connections her kidnappers had, not because her and Fengming are related.

yup those are cordyceps. They're are the same funguses that are essential to the plot of the last of us and known for infecting and basically zombifying ants
