Anyone saying they don't need to watch the 2010 movie are 1. Wrong. and B. You're depriving them of lore and an actually fun movie to see that's on Netflix's One Piece level of nerdy goodness. Roshi, Sheera, Lupa, watch the movie first before this anime. There is a plot reason. Light spoiler: This anime is not a retelling or reimaged version of the comics/movie.

the 2010 movie is almost mandatory viewing, the show is essentially an alternate retelling of that. they really serve each other better as companion pieces.

Whelp, this is kind of a spoiler but I had no idea the Netflix anime goes in a complete direction from the books/movie after Ep. 1 and thought it would just be another straight adaptation just with more run-time than the original movie got. But after getting a rough explanation of what they actually change, it just makes me more excited to watch this show; I only caution you that if you haven't seen the original movie or read the comics it's basically worthless to you, because it sounds like they made a stealth sequel and didn't mention it at all in the marketing. All of the comments saying it's garbage compared to the original are wayyy funnier in context now, if what I've heard about the new direction is accurate.
