LETS GOOOOOOO! I'll have a bunch if background info after I watch like usual haha

stanley drury anderson jr

I’m not into D and D but this show makes me wanna watch critical role campaign also vax was popping off

Raider

Let’s go, slow day today just got better!

Brandon Rodgers

I started watching their campaign after season 1, and you can tell they put in a lot of effort to make certain scenes accurate to the game

Smash Bran'Discootch

So it's worth it to mention that Liam Obrien, Vax's player and voice actor was going through an extremely difficult time in his life during this arc of the campaign. He lost his mom to cancer, he had his own health related scare, and he sank into a really heavy depression. He talked to Matt, the DM and a very trusted friend about it, and he began to use this campaign, this story to sort of work through some of the things going on in his head and in his personal life. That's why Vax's character is sort of beloved in the Critter community, because SOOOOO much of Liam went into Vax's journey. Another thing that hit Liam really hard was that in the Campaign, Vax had been getting closer to Pike's Goddess Sarenrae(The Everlight). Liam was even considering taking some levels in Paladin to reflect that. Vax even wore a symbol of the everlight on the back of his hand. As soon as Vax made that deal, his everlight symbol began to corrode and rusted off, signifying that the everlight was no longer the one he served, now it's The Raven Queen. It showed that pretty well in the show with the golden thread of Fate now connecting Vax to The Raven Queen.

Alorian

I'm so hype for this reaction. LETS GOOOOOOOOOO

bandi138138

If one is to become the champion of the goddess of death and fate, one must accept fate and embrace death.

Jason McKay

This show hitting on all cylinders, such good tv rn

Sam

Maaan, this episode was great. A little something for Lupa cause you're a Batman fan: Kash is voiced by the VA for Terry McGinnis from Batman Beyond!

StorySmith []

Ah beholders one of dnd most iconic monsters slightly sad that all we saw was it’s petrification powers. But oh well probably difficult to translate a monster that attack without missing. When it hits ya instead of it rolling a die to see if it hits instead it hit’s automatically and a player has to roll what is called a “saving throw” to resist Any additional negative effects These monsters are the king of status condition sleep, paralysis telekinesis, slowing, fear, even death rays and an anti magic field for when things get dicey Beholders are the Swiss Army knife of dnd monsters

Smash Bran'Discootch

-Soooo Vax's speed originally came from a combination of a couple of different items. It gave him an speed of 120ft per 6 seconds. They did speedyboi Vax suuuuuuuch justice. Like 120ft of movement in Dnd is OBSCENE. -The creature that they fought is a legally-distinct-totally-not-a-beholder. Beholders are some of the most iconic dnd monsters, up there with dragons. -The Necklace that Zahra had that she gave to Vex is called Raven's Slumber. It originally contained a massive Wolf named Galdrick who, by happenstance, ended up being the oldest living creature in Exandria. He was Purvan's companion back during the Age of Arcanum before The Calamity and The Divergence. -Vex affectionately referred to the Necklace as her pokeball even once saying, "By the power vested in me, Trinket I choose you!" -It was a lot of fun to see Zahra and Kash in a sort of antagonistic role and the actors had a great time with it. -Kash on The Legend Of Vox Machina was Will Friedel's FIRST ever swear word spoken in an animated show and he's had a looooooooong career of VO work. -You have now seen The Raven Queen, the neutral Goddess of Fate and the moment of transition between Life and Death. She's not evil, she just is. -What The Raven Queen essentially did was sever the thread of Fate between Vex and Vax and tied Vax's Fate to Her. She took Vax's deal, Vax is now the new champion. The previous champion was champion before The Calamity. -Incidentally, Kash is the one who gave Keyleth her first kiss in the OG campaign.

Kingmakaii

Oh yeah vax OD now

The Raven Queen (The Matron of Ravens) is the goddess of fate, winter and death, but specifically the moment of death and the journey to the other side, she’s kinda like the grim reaper, which is why she appeared when Vex died, but she also abhors the undead, hence why she needs a champion.

Bria A.

The Matron of Ravens (Raven Queen, changed in story lore for copyright reasons) is the goddess primarily in charge of winter and the transition between life and death. It hasn’t quite come up yet, but she can’t stand perversions of death, which basically means any sentient undead creature. The last scene with her wasn’t so much a flashback as a flashfoward, and I’m almost entirely sure the guy wasn’t Purvan — just some arbitrary dying man to imply that Vax will eventually have to step into that role and shepherd these transitions into death.

EMTpromises

The quote through the episode “no matter what happens, it’s out of our control” pays homage to what the Raven queen stands for, Death being a necessary part of the ephemeral world and those trying to control their fate are the ones she stands against. (Definitely one of the deepest lore based deities in DnD and has ties to almost everyone somehow I loved the porcelain mask portrayal in this)

Hasnain Khan

Yehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

DatKid_Kaneki

dont domesticate a bear unless ur russian

BZD

Pretty sure Vex actually rolled a 1 in the actual session.

Smash Bran'Discootch

If you're not familiar with Dnd and you haven't watched any live actual play videos, I would strongly recommend starting with Campaign 2: The Mighty Nein. By then, they had more funding and more consistent sponsors and they had sort of found their stride with streaming so you don't get the audio or video errors that might turn away a new viewer. It takes place in the same world but each of the players are playing different characters. The characters are also all more complex and have more complex motivations. You can find all of their stuff on Critical Role's youtube channel. It's also available for free in podcast form on audible. It's DEFINITELY a time sink, but it's worth it.

Moonbane8

baby bears are still bears. they will bite and it will hurt.

Rami Homsi

Vax's bloodhound step goes crazy

BZD

I think the Matron of Ravens is basically the Grimm reaper, that’s why she showed up at that sick man.

Smash Bran'Discootch

Funny story, Vex is actually the one who originally ended up with The Death Walker's Ward(the Vestige they found) and she chose to GIVE it to Vax.

Mad4Life

I'm pretty sure the matron of ravens is just the grim reaper.

Devin B

Vax had an assassin like fighting style but with his new upgrade that gave him an insane amount of speed he's definitely scary.

Coatl45

There are worse patrons than the Goddess of Death. She’s neutral in most things, with the exception of undead, she hates them more than the druids do. Personally, I think that the main downside in being her champion is that she’s way too busy and old to have proper conversations with her followers the way that the Everlight did with Pike last season. Vax is going to have to make do with interpreting visions and signs like what she showed him in that burnt out hut. Although, I gotta admit, choosing to make Vax go through a trial when a damn beholder is tearing things up is one hell of an initiation.

von

Nah I’m not letting that slide Lupa u a whole bitch for that scream 😂😂😂

KyleForged

Shes possibly too busy but shes definitely not too old, especially in comparison to the Everlight. Slight Campaign spoiler since 2 campaigns later we still dont have an answer for it The Raven Queen was just a humanoid from I think 1000-2000 years before the campaign completed a spell that made her the Goddess of Death in place of the former god of death who could no longer be remembered after it happened but as far as we know the Everlight had been there since near the beginning

NiTESkYKu_28

Lupa Scream jump scared me wtf lupa 🗿

Coatl45

Ah. Sorry. Most death gods I’m familiar with are some of the oldest of their pantheons, so I assumed. Thanks.

BlueJayde

This vid is missing the Legend of Vox Machina tag btw!

WeavyBoo

Wow that Somebody do something line was amazing voice acting. Liam is a fantastic actor bro

KyleForged

Yeah in literally any other scenario youd be right on but its actually one of the series' biggest mysteries and catalysts that shes not that old. The Calamity was even the result of somebody trying to replicate what she did to obtain godhood and it went very very bad.

Ethan

Omfg that's exactly what it visually reminds me of

WeavyBoo

they really put trinket in a trinket

Kwaku Afari

Hey Roshi you forgot to add the tag

rickie woodson

so......is everyone going to get a magical item this season and be like power rangers/the planeteers? combine their weapons to form the mega blaster or captain planet lol. scalan has the broom, grog the blood sword, vax the vestige of armor plus there are other vestiges to acquire.

rickie woodson

im pretty sure the matron of ravens is a death goddess so she has made vax her reaper. the same thing just happened in dr. strange. he died and made a deal with death to come back. the catch? he has to first serve as her champion and capture a set number of souls for her. i believe something like that is happening her. these visions look very much like the death sight valkyries have in marvel comics

aDopeiSotope

So the sick man in the bed is Vax? It shows the The Matron of Ravens reaching down as if to take his soul similar to Vex, and the zombie would be him as the undead since he is still tied to her due to taking Vex's place.

rickie woodson

why do you assume these are flashbacks and not just remote viewing or psychic phenomenon happening in the present?

Kisuke01

Lupa what happened to "HELP THE BEAR"

WackySwacky

It looks different from a normal beholder because of copyright reasons.

StorySmith []

Yeah I should have figured that. I mean that’s the exact reason none of the gods are being called by their actual names. Just titles

Ebronics

yeah she's pretty knew "god wise" and started with death and later added fate and winter to her portfolio

Ebronics

Roshi voicing the matron of ravens every thought this episode lol

Smash Bran'Discootch

So there's a few things in the show that point to them being flashbacks, if you're curious. If this is just like a rhetorical question and you don't actually want an answer then my bad bro, I'll keep my mouth shut lol

baja

it's almost as if they are an anime watcher?

Silent Doe

The Matron of Ravens is a Lawful Neutral deity, meaning she's not good or bad. She's in charge of death and hates it when anyone cheats (makes undead, becomes immortal, etc.)

DarkGodHao

Vax serves the Goddess of Death now, and seeing as he's part elf he's stuck with that job for a VERY LONG TIME

Mr. K

Still longer than any human, especially during the "medieval times" lol

Eli Irizarry

This episode finally got me on the Patreon lol, great stuff y'all

Chimera134

Something I noticed this ep on a rewatch. The couple in the broken house looked like Sylas and Delilah from last season. Remember Sylas was deathly sick and Delilah turned to dark magic to turn him into a vampire and keep him forever? The Matron of Ravens is Goddess of Death and it's said that she absolutely hates undead creatures, ill gotten immortality and general death cheating. So I think she was showing Vax "If I had had a champion at this time, these people would have never been a problem. Now that I have you, it's your job to kill those that try to skirt my grasp."

Anorak

Lupa went from dry to shiny in zero point five
