Saved the best for last!

L.C.

Did you fight in the war? Did you kill people? Nah. I just did the paperwork.

Pudge

Snake really said "You're not suicidal. You're just edgy."

EZ

he didnt ask fight he said "been to war" you can be in wars and not kill, just like the preist and canute at the start

Nut Sox

it was canute

G. B.

"thats not canute canute is beautiful" - lovely dialogue lol

Smiling viper

It would be amazing that after last of us or Vinland saga that they would check out “the last kingdom” on Netflix. 5 seasons and a movie incoming.

Bader

it is 100% canute

L.C.

Thorfinn is way younger than him? I could have sworn I thought they were around the same age....

Danny

i think it was Canute. remember there's been a timeskip plus new studio. Thorfinn didn't look like himself either at first

BoxHead

Guys Einar is (20 YEARS OLD) and Thorfinn is 18-19 around this time cause of the time skip.

Theo Vorster

Yeah, though the "new studio" isn't particularly significant in this instance, as nearly all of the staff from season 1 of Vinland Saga moved from Studio Wit to MAPPA for season 2, so nearly all the same people are still working on it for season 2. And yes the person in the last scene was indeed Canute, it's just the difference of the 1+ year time-skip (and the animators for this episode are likely different from the individuals who animated the OP animation, so there are slightly different stylistic differences between the various animators in the production team).

Theo Vorster

Not much younger, Thorfinn is a year younger than Einar. Also Thorfinn can't have been directly part of either of the raids/pillaging on Einar's village, as the first pillaging was committed by English soldiers (Thorfinn was part of the Danish side) and the second one (which was done by Danes) occurred during the time-skip of when Thorfinn became a slave himself.

Sixaxis112

A lot of the close up shots are recreations of the manga panels. The author likes to show emotions through the face and eyes.

Devin B

I'm pretty half the reason Einar was choking Thorfinn out was cause he was tired of waking this nigga up from his night terrors

KeYo

roshi was by himself there with that r kelly lmaooo. i wonder of r kelly sneezes when they sing his songs lol

Greg Harrison

Guys don't spoil. They'll find out next ep

2023-01-31 04:21:00 For those who are interested in reading along with the manga, this episode adapted the last 10 pages of chapter 59, all of chapter 60, and the last scene in the episode homaged a couple pages (but didn't directly adapt) from chapter 61. Next episode is likely adapting the entirety of chapters 61-62. The story-boarder of this episode was Atsushi Kobayashi (you can see some of his others credits here: https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=90289), who also boarded some of the more visually striking episodes from season 1 of Vinland Saga (and is apparently a relatively prolific animator/boarder). Though what was interesting about this episode was how there was a number of additions and changes to the content this episode adapted from chapter 60 of the manga. Some of these include stuff like additional lines of dialogue during Thorfinn and Einar's conversation with Pater (the squinty-eyed ex-slave), cutting of some internal dialogue/monologues from characters and relying more on visual storytelling to convey information. However, the most notable changes this episode had from chapter 60 of the manga was the night-time scene with Thorfinn and Einar at the end of the episode. In the manga Einar actually stops himself from trying to choke Thorfinn before he even lays a hand on Thorfinn (with Einar instead internally thinking the "it's not as though he [Thorfinn] was responsible for killing my family..." line to himself), the manga chapter also didn't give us a peek of what Thorfinn was dreaming about (so no trippy dream sequence). The scene after Einar woke Thorfinn up also differed as well, with the manga focusing on Einar realizing Thorfinn is extremely not used to being treated kindly by others (hence why Thorfinn had no response to Pater's earlier kindness and why Thorfinn asks why Einar wakes him up from his nightmares), and then Einar declaring that he and Thorfinn are friends now (the chapter ending with a small comedic moment of Thorfinn asking "what does that mean" in a nonplussed manner). The anime's decision to instead emphasize Einar's rage more and connect his rebuke of Thorfinn's despairing pessimism back to the lesson/philosophy of Einar's mother was an interesting creative choice. I'm not sure which version I prefer personally, but based on the Twitter of Makoto Yukimura (the mangaka of Vinland Saga) it appears to be a change he is okay with. And that was indeed Canute at the end of the episode, he's just grown out of his feminine boyish looks over the course of the last 1+ years. Also if Lupa wants to be a little more accurate, he should be saying "in Denmark" instead of "in Norway" for the intros.

Theo Vorster

Sure, but Roshi and the crew have already seen a preview of what Canute looks like this season from the season 2 OP visuals (Lupasan even commented on the OP using Canute's facial scar as a visual transition in one of the previous reactions). So it's not like they are unaware of the fact that Canute will look different this season.

Aneesa

Also I’m not sure if they noticed, but the lady Thorfinn was about to cut down was the one with the daughter and dog who took him in, fed him, and combed his hair in that early episode. They don’t have the time to rewatch eps so it’s understandable if they didn’t remember

Kenisha & Kim

yo thorfinn fighting again is so nostalgic like he is tooo skilled for these men

Devin B

Thorfinn didn't care when he was getting cut up by Fox cause he didn't see him as a warrior but as soon as he saw a glimpse of Snake about to cut him he instantly recognized him as a warrior and his body refused to lose to a fellow warrior. After fighting warriors for most of his life Thorfinn's body did what it naturally did and defended against their attacks.

WAY

why do patreon randomly change its video player all the time. Everytime they do it, its ass.

Ron H

Nobody spoke on it but we all realize Thorfinn’s nightmare is his epic run thru that squad on the bridge from the 1st season, right? If I’m saying somethin crazy obvious just keep going

L.C.

Wonder what gave roshi the idea that thorfinn was "way younger" than Einar

Patrone07

Yep Thorfin wants to live lol he maybe broken but like I said he’s not completely empty inside

Patrone07

But I thought he was so empty inside like you said 2 episodes ago lmao

Devin B

Lol I still stand by that statement. Even at this moment he doesn't know what to live for or why he defended himself in the first place. Deep down he wants to live but with no purpose fueling his desire to live he's just lost. To me empty means there's no substance. Same thing with Shirou from Fate Stay Night, he was just living to please others and didn't have a purpose of his own.

ERRORCODE616

It's interesting to me that Thorfinn is always a kid in his nightmares. I wonder why.

Onyekachi Nkenke

In the next episode Roshi realizes people grow up

Theo Vorster

Probably because Thorfinn is short/below average height and Einar is big/above average size.

BornUnMotivated

that scar on his right shoulder was back when he got shot with an arrow and saved by the old lady.

Arc

My guy said: "That's not Canute, he's beautiful" :D

MWS

There was a line in the unofficial translations i read that was so much better and made me love Einar in the manga “the people who did that to my village definitely aren’t having nightmares about it”

Kevin Kovacs

Yeah... next ep is gonna be a really dope one! Roshi is gonna say to Canute that he's HIM! 😅

Tyler

I noticed that as well. That was a really nice touch.

2023-01-31 18:48:01 Was Einar actually chocking Thorfin or did he stop was he noticed Thorfin was having a nightmare? I couldn't see any marks on Thorfin's neck. I'm just genuinely curious and think either option would still convey the anger and kindness in Einar.

Roshi: That's not Canute, Canute is beautiful. LMAO he's not wrong

PayTheRent

Mappa dropping hidden cries for help

ERRORCODE616

Yeah, I think it's either that or it's symbolic of his mind trying to hold on to the few good memories he had as a kid, when everything since then has been death, destruction, suffering, and rage.

zay

I mean to be fair Canute is still kinda feminine looking at this point in the manga as well, im not sure why he looked like that in the anime

Dale Cooper

In the manga he's over Thorfinn, clenches his fists and then relaxes to help him wake up. Einar is a bit less kind in the anime so far, but not a bad take considering what he's going through.

Dale Cooper

My main gripe with the anime is they make Einar way more pissed off than he comes across in the manga. I get he has his reasons to be obviously, but Einar being the ray of sunshine (most of the time) is alot of what his character is about along with how that impacts Thorfinn.

MC zsn

iF lUpA wAnTs tO bE a lItTlE mOrE aCcUrAtE"..F'n nerd

Dale Cooper

He never mentally developed and I think that was what this arc handled was the mental adolescence for him. He came across some well developed individuals despite circumstances and it helped him grow up.

Andrew shultz

The first zombie was the guy he killed on the beach in the episode before that as well. Same moves and everything.

Andrew shultz

Y’all made up the whole “Einar is way older” part.

Theo Vorster

Of course I am a nerd, I would think that should be self-evident from the original post.

EZ

It's the same team that worked on season 1 though

ok

22:14 where did this come from Roshi? 😂

ok

23:56 Roshi clappin himself left and right 😂😭

ok

rather them go for Vikings first. Just Ragnar as a character is incredible.

ok

bro they didnt recognize Leif let alone her haha. probably thought she was his mom or some shit

Kii

Definitely vikings before the last kingdom

Ghastly

Its a shame that some people cant just enjoy the story. Fighting scenes are great but they exist in so many shows. Just give something different a chance

x_XBurner361

🤣 @ the way Lupasan tried to save Roshi from the R Kelly reference, not knowing people getting cancelled for Harry Potter references now a days too. Getting clapped for anything now…

rayman

I just can't understand making a comment like that. You must be internally miserable to shit on someone's vibe like that

freecostco

i know im late but 🤣 not the "i've turned over a new cheek" confusing "turn the other cheek" and "turned over a new leaf"
