Mappa isn't doing as well as WIT did. The overall quality is waaay better in season 1 compared to the 2 episodes we have from Mappa. People praise Mappa but WIT had better quality. Anyways I can still enjoy it. It isn't bad. I also get a little annoyed by the excessively drawn out scenes that have happened in these first 2 episodes but it won't push me away

For those who are interested in reading along with the manga this episode adapted all of chapter 56 and the majority of chapter 57 (specifically 25/38 pages). Something to keep in mind, the North Atlantic slave trade of Northern Europe during the 11th century wasn’t quite as dehumanizing as the later Trans-Atlantic chattel slave trade of the Americas. Slaves like Thorfinn and Einar (known as “thralls”, while non-nobility free-men were called “karls”) tended to have slightly more societal rights and upward-mobility opportunities, so the Ketil dude wasn’t bullshitting Thorfinn and Einar about them being able to feasibly purchase their freedom back within 3 years. As for how long Thorfinn has been a slave, while the exact amount of time he’s already been on Ketil’s farm is unspecified in the manga, the manga does specify that Thorfinn and Einar meet during late June of 1015 (and King Sweyn and Askeladd died in February of 1014), so Thorfinn can at *most* have been on Ketil’s farm for a little more than a year. Roshi definitely has a good genre-savvy eye for Olmar’s (Ketil’s son) narrative role in this arc, though the exact in-and-outs of his arc will likely surprise him by the end. And IIRC I believe even if the tenant farmer’s daughter had a bastard child with Olmar, it would still likely grant the tenant farmer family some upward mobility/social-connections and security, as acknowledged bastards still had some social standing (think of how bastards worked in Game of Thrones). Since this episode didn’t adapt all of chapter 57, the roles of the two drunks weren’t defined yet, but it’s not really a spoiler to know what their jobs on the farm are. Those two drunk guys were “Guests”, basically mercenary soldiers hired as security-guards for the farm (so they aren’t part of the farm-hands like the karls who ate part of Einar and Thorfinn’s lunch). To give context for farming back then, the average productivity ratio for wheat back then was only about 1 to 2-3, meaning for every 1 bag of wheat used to plant a crop, the average harvest would produce about 2-3 bags of wheat (giving a net productivity of about 1-2). So every bit of the harvest counted back then.

As others have mentioned, the core members/majority of the production team who worked on Vinland Saga for season 1 at studio WIT moved to MAPPA for season 2, and are largely the same individuals. Hence why the production committee eye-catch at the beginning of each episode is the same animation as last season’s. There really isn’t any significant difference in animation quality.

For the people that can't read when I say WIT had better quality I am talking about when the core staff were at WIT compared to being with Mappa now. That wasn't my main point though. I am mainly comparing season 1 to the first couple episodes of season 2. I can point out quite a few scenes that don't look all that great or are dragged out excessively long from these first 2 episodes. Either way it isn't bad. The art is still the same. Too bad they aren't making it as good as the first season. Shouldn't have much problem doing it since you can focus a lot more on the art with this arc having a smaller amount of animation to deal with.

Realistically Thorfinn can dip whenever he wants to but what is out there for him. If I was Thorfinn I would think about trying to make it back home but even in the first season we see thar he didn't even think about going home. His original goal as a kid was to be a warrior like his dad but he saw how his dad got done dirty and had a new goal of defeating Askeladd as a warrior. He spent roughly 11 years trying to fulfill that goal but now that he lost it Thorfinn feels like he doesn't have any purpose so he's just going with the flow at the moment. You can think of Thorfinn as Shirou from Fate stay night. He was the kind of person that didn't care about their own happiness and didn't have any goals for himself, he was just happy making others happy. Even if they look okay on the outside inside they're hollow.

The main reason you think s2 so far has more flaws is because there isn’t some king of Sakuga action scene to distract you from some inconsistencies. If you go back to the first few episodes of S1 you can see inconsistencies but ur brain fails to acknowledge it because of Thor’s fight scene in ep 1 and the whole askeladd encounter. I honestly can't see Thorfinn being there having a deeper meaning cause we saw how much his vengeance took over a majority of his life so to lose his chance for revenge is definitely going to leave a big hole in Thorfinn's life cause not even the desire to get home was present within Thorfinn last season. If you take away that big of a part away from Thorfinn nothing is really left there until he decides to add new things to it but as of right now he's figuratively running on empty.

The woman making him stop reporting, I think he had nothing to lose until that point but when he saw that girl, I guess he fell in love with her at first sight, so now he has something to care about (trying to "woo her") so reporting the retainers wasn't worth it anymore since Thorfinn already said that it would only lead to more harassment from the Retainers.
