Don't believe the narrator!!! They mostly if not all lie, exaggerate, or just miss things. It's a story after all told by the perspective of someone. That's why I love this anime, it's all perspective

So as to why Kaiki is alive: He says in his arc multiple times that he is a liar. He also says in his beginning monolog, something along the lines of: "I hope I can tell a story, where by the end the readers can say: "He got what he deserved" ". He also blatantly foreshadows his death multiple times throughout his arc saying: "I hope I don't get stabbed", etc. The reason for him saying he died at the end was kind of his final goodbye to the audience. In the novels, he never appears in any story told after this. Hanamonogatari is technically told right in the middle of second season, but it was released later as a separate arc because of production issues. Which is why this "conclusion" to his character doesn't make sense, because it's not the last arc he appears in anymore. Don't forget these are stories (monogatari) told by the respective characters, from their perspective. This is also why for example people in nadeko's story are shown as abstract figures, and probably also why Araragi's arcs always feel at least a bit more horny than the rest. I mean, Kaiki's story has pretty much 0 fanservice. Tl;dr: Kaiki lied about his death as a final goodbye to the audience.

I really enjoy Kaiki as a character. His dialogue about people is really good since we do tend to reduce everything to black and white but its never that easy.

To add to a previous comment by V-IceCP, one of the other motivations of Kaiki faking his death is so that he can exit Senjougahara's life. In the final episode of second season he talks about how Araragi's presence in Nadeko's is unhealthy for her and makes a parallel with him and Senjougahara, just as Araragi will from then on leave Nadeko's life and become a memory, so does he for Senjougahara.

Funny thing, this book came out BEFORE the Nadeko arc book. They moved it to after for the anime because this spoils that Kaiki didnt die from getting piped in the back of the head.

I don't think the whole "Kaiki died... but then he didn't" thing was ever actually explained. My guess on how Kaki is alive is, in one word, lies. In the beginning of Koimonogatari he alluded to how he, like Araragi, is an unreliable narrator and will at times straight up lie to the viewer and that none of the events described by him should be taken at face value. So he essentially conned the audience into thinking he died.

Notice how Kaiki's character, or rather, how we see his character has gone full 180. He was introduced as this big bad guy by Araragi, whose parents are both police officers (hence why he and his sisters have such a strong sense of justice). Araragi often sees things as black and white. As soon as he heard that Kaiki scammed his sister, he assumed he was the devil on earth, and even after having seen him save nadeko, Araragi still distrusts him. After we get to know Kaiki better in his arc, he becomes less of a villain, and more of a protagonist, who just has a liking towards money. And in this arc, he just full-on takes on the role of a nice uncle, just trying to help Suruga out, because he wants to. There's been zero character development, the only thing that's changed is our perspective. This is why I love this series.

YOu wanna know how he's alive?? You want the TRUTH?! The Truth is that Kaiki is a fucking liar, and we watched a story from his perspective where he straight up LIED about his own goddamn ending. How fuckin' meta is that? This is the best written anime I've ever watched. In-universe, the kid did try to kill him and he did go unconscious, he just didn't die. He told us RIGHT AT THE BEGINNING of Koimonogatari that he would be flat out lying to us and that in the end we'd be thinking "serves him right", but for some dumbass reason I didn't believe him. The motherfucker Conned me so that he could have a symbolic redemption both in-universe and in the mind of the audience by being re-introduced to be nothing but a nice guy, even though he didn't even really do anything he wouldn't have normally done. What a legend. Kaiki best girl
