I’m confused about what y’all thought Aki was about to do with his eye lol. The future devil literally said he can peek a few seconds into the immediate future and that’s it. We’re not going based on jojo seconds where it lasts like a minute lol he can only see a very small glimpse of the future and it’s maybe enough to barely dodge something if he can foresee it coming. Other than that he has to rely on pure physical ability hence why him slicing the ghost devil up was still impressive cause he had little assistance.

Saying that his death will be awesome will divide how people are gonna think the way he's gonna die. Oh she's by no means weak, later you'll see she has an extremely powerful ability, that we see only twice in the show - the main reason Makima keeps her around. The appearance of a devil is mostly chosen by them. Spider chose a humanoid smaller frame and she's also weakened because of the limited blood that the Hunters are giving her. Future is also extremely OP but he's rather small and friendly.

The Future Devil said "saiaku na shinikata", which translates as "the worst way to die ever". Maybe the Crunchyroll translator is a n00b in Japanese and thought he heard "saikyô" instead of "saiaku", but unfortunately that's not the first time this happens with Crunchyroll. For example last ep, when Denji wondered about his heart saying "shinzô dake ja naku, hito no kokoro made nakunacchimatta no ka?" (basically "Did I not only lose my heart organ, but also my human heart?"), the Crunchyroll translation made it sound too vague. Denji was wondering if Pochita replacing his heart organ made him lose his humanity, but many reactors thought he was talking about how his own harsh past made him oblivious to social interactions. This, in my opinion, is a translation failure. Even in this episode 11, there are few moments like when Kobeni says twice "kaeritai" (I wanna go home), and they translated the second time by "I hate this" (they probably just thought it sounded funny given the context of the scene, in an American way). Or when they made Kishibe say "I don't care what fucked up shit you have cooking [...] You get a pass..." to Makima, because making an old Japanese man express himself like a suburban American zoomer makes perfect sense, right? Or when they made Kurose say "So she let you have it?" to Aki instead of simply "So she slapped you?" It's like Crunchyroll are trying so hard to sound "kewl" and contemporary with their slang that it looks like it's written "Hello, fellow youngsters" all over the characters' faces. English is a language inherited from Norse Vikings' oral traditions. Therefore it was mostly transmitted orally through the generations, just like African languages or Carribean Créole; and unlike European Latin-based languages or East-Asian languages that are deeply rooted in rigid transcriptions (try learning Chinese or Japanese through oral exposition for 20 years of your life and you will barely be able to express yourself, because you won't understand the root of the language's system, whereas learning English from oral exposition in less than a year is totally feasible). Because of this, English is a melting pot of different origins. It's an ever evolving language in perpetual motion that creates new buzz words and expressions everyday. What I mean is that like the dead slang of your grandparents, those subtitles are gonna age like milk. Imagine a soundcloud rapper listening to a beatnik interview, trying to understand what the fuck the interviewee is actually saying. This will be the same type of alien experience your grandchildren will go through while trying to watch Chainsaw Man through Crunchyroll subtitles. Translating in the most formal way possible, unless indicated otherwise, and as close to the source material as possible, would have been the safer way to go. Say, let's theorize that maybe Crunchyroll are actually thoughtful and thought about the American cinema's influence on Chainsaw Man, and wanted those characters to express themselves in casual english like cool American dudes wearing black suits would do, à la Réservoir Dogs or Pulp Fiction. It's just a theory but it's totally possible. But then it would have made more sense for them to wait for the dub to change the dialogues. Dubbing is an adaptation. Subtitling is a direct translation. Please someone thell them the difference.

The japanese manga has the exact same line used in the anime. They translated it to "your death will fucking rule" as the translators believed this captures the intent the author was trying to express. When you directly translate Japanese into English, you lose nuance. I speak japanese and this translation is fine. Another example is that the translation of "damare onna" is just literally "shut up woman" but it doesn't capture the intent the author was expressing. In Japanese, it is extremely rude to tell someone to "damare"; Even more so adding "onna" at the end. But in English "shut up woman" isn't as offensive as it is in Japanese. That's why they changed it to "shut up bitch" because it expresses intent better. Direct translations lead to loss in meaning from Japanese to English and vice versa because the languages share very few traits, which is why translators have to be more creative than usual. In this context, this is actually a good translation. Because it follows the flow of the dialogue very well. "You must be thinking, that's all?" -> this is supported by the intrigue by the devil in to Aki's death being theatrical. There are multiple right ways to translate this. The only one who can make assertions is the actual author himself because only he knows just exactly what intent he meant to deliver. The translators here didn't fuck up, at all.

Damn, Didier, sorry people don’t like reading comments pertinent to the show in a… comment section about the show? Lol. Took me less than two minutes to read and I rather enjoyed your information. Even if most people disagreed with what you were saying, it was still an informative and thought out post. Now while if I personally don’t take the translation issues quite that seriously, I can see how nuance is lost in the pursuit of being relevant or catchy with a different/specific audience, and in a series or show like this - where almost everything is intentional - it can be annoying. That being said, the entire production behind this adaptation has been near flawless, so we can let some things slide. Thanks for sharing man.

Yes a death devil would be really strong. I'm not sure if it would be the strongest, there are things people are afraid of more than death that we don't really realize. Understand, with conceptual demons existing, nothing is off the table. I'm sure something like a pain demon would actually be stronger than death.

The girl with the snake... she got a nosebleed just like the other guys that Makima killed this episode. Her contract with the snake has only taken her nails so far in the show, so I was thinking that the nosebleed was from Makima trying to kill her, but it didn't work. Really interesting, it could be an inherent power that Makima can't kill people who have contract with Devils or the snake girl might have another ability up her sleeve that negated Makima's long-distance killing ability.

People would be more terrified of things that cause death than death itself. People know they will die, the fear mainly focuses on the HOW part. So if there was something to fear greater than Death it would be fear of the Unknown because people are scared of uncertainty. At least that's how I'd see it.

Just gonna add my two cents, regarding the translation bit, I completely agree with Danial. As someone whose native language isn't English and translates as a daily thing, it is very important to not translate literally. Few times will you be able to translate literally word for word and get the same level of context or nuance than if you added what the words are meant to convey. This goes for any language and not just translating to English either, languages aren't similar enough to where direct translations will mean the same thing, even moreso when those languages have different cultures behind them.

For those anime-only watchers of this show, manga readers are furious about the wrong translation during the Future devil scene because that line will be brought back later in the story, and changing it will cause a problem. It's only the English translation that decides to change it meanwhile every other language follows the correct translation.

UPDATE TO ALL THE OFFICAL SUBS!! Almost all the subs changed the line of the future devil from "Your death in the future will fucking rule" into "your death in the future will be the fucking worst". i know manga fans were mad and plz dont try to explain why but I saw a reddit it post saying crunchyroll and others changed the sub for some reason so i thought i would share

Just realized in the opening song in the movie theater scene. Everyone of the Special division 4 is present except the Violence fiend and at the ending song no. 11. They featured all of the eternity devil arc characters except for Arai and inserted the violence fiend in. Hmmmmmmm...
