Brit here. So some useless facts. If you guys are confused the IRA they keep mentioning is Irish Republican Army, a terrorist group, well terrorist to the brits and revolutionaries to the Irish, which were waging a guerilla war for the independence of the Ireland. They do end up winning in the 1922 but right now, that is 1919, the war is still going on. People like Chester Campbell (the officer) and a group called Black and Tans made up of constables from Ireland carried out brutal killings to suppress the revolution. These include extrajudical killings , attacking civilians and properties. Their actions weren't looked at too fondly back in Britian. That's why Churchill warns Chester that this is England and not Belfast (capital of what is now Northern Ireland).
