The thing about Gilgamesh is that he really should never lose, if you are looking at only his abilities. But the other thing about Gilgamesh is that he is unbelievably arrogant and often won’t pull out the big guns until he feels he is facing someone worthy of it, like Iskander. But against Archer he wouldn’t want to sully Ea by using it on him.

In the original VN, he had a weird sword fixation that didn't really make it into the anime. Any time he'd catch a glimpse of a sword in battle, he'd suddenly start dreaming about it the next night and had no idea why. Archer using Unlimited Blade Works was supposed to be the point where everything clicked and you realize he'd been subconsciously starting to register weapons into his Reality Marble without realizing (even though he couldn't summon it yet). It was a cool detail that kind of tied everything together, but I guess the anime couldn't figure out a good way to show it.

@Benjamin Lancelot can't beat Gil even with Knight of Honor, idk why people always bring him up in the list of Servants who could. No Lancelot is one who is capable of beating Gilg under the right conditions (a large part of those conditions resulting from neglect on gilg's part). It's even the plot point of an alternate Fate/Zero story. Yes Gilg can thrash pretty much most anyone if you're just comparing raw damage output and such, but he's literally designed to be overcome via circumstantial conditions, which is what makes him such a good narrative antagonist archetype of the insurmountable wall

The more i see of these comment section explanations while reading out of curiosity, the less i want to make the jump into fate. My friend talking about it had a similar effect of just making me think this is way too overcomplicated to possibly be satisfying coherent. Fate isn't that complicated don't let people scare you off. It's no different than Star Wars, yes there is a ton of lore and really in depth material if you want to go looking for it, but the movies themselves have a simplistic and easy to follow plot and none of that extra lore knowledge is necessary. Same with Fate.

Archers is referred to as Faker a lot and him and Gil got serious beef because he essentially is like a hollow copy of him since the shirou that is this ARcher is from the Fate timeline where they constantly fight gilgamesh whos obsessed with saber and copies lot of his shit. Also the thing he said to saber about someone saving her is reference to him breaking his promise to her from FATE like I said before Saber is not really a heroic spirit she's actually a living person who freely gives her services to the grail because of her past regrets. I will say it's really not that complicated, especially if you just read the VN which does a much better job explaining things than the anime. I find that the anime adaptations go at a way faster pace, so they have to throw everything at you in a few lines or cut it entirely. The VN feels much more natural in its storytelling and pacing, so you'll be lost far less often, if at all. People just like making it more complex than it is by spouting random lore or extra information that isn't necessary to know what's going on.

I dont know much about fate shit, but i still think, gilgamesh not being able to be summoned as summoned, is downright criminal to his potency. If im not wrong, gil in his prime was believed to have mastered every weapon in his arsenal, that would make him fcking insane

You guys were wondering how Archer knows all the stuff he does about the weapons and other servants. He knows because he himself was once Shirou and fought in the fifth holy grail war, where he probably found out all their names during that time. So since he learned that when he was alive, the archer summoned to this war always has the info on the other servants and masters. Of course, he doesn't share that information since he's hiding his identity.

i was the same after watching ubw for the first time but after a while and watching heavens feel i decided to get into the rest of it. it was a bit of a commitment but much less than i thought and the fate franchise ended up being my favorite in all of anime. in the meantime i’m sure you’ll enjoy the monogatari series it is really an excellent watch.

Archer hasnt lived that long to have gone through all those fights. He is shirou from the FUTURE. so think about it. He didnt live through the past eras but then how could he have been there? Because remember they said that he wanted to keep helping others even in his AFTERLIFE, meaning after death. He became a heroic spirit therefore meaning he can be summoned during ANY holy grail war. So all those betrayals and hardships were all from times he was summoned to fight as a servant in different holy grail wars from different eras. That is why he has so many copies of legendary weapons and is also why gilgamesh called him a faker, because archer has COPIES of every single heroic weapon just like gilgamesh has the ORIGINALS of every single heroic weapon

If you notice that in this fight, Lancer would have 100% killed Archer if Archer had not provoked him to throw the spear. If Lancer continued to use his noble phantasm and fight close range, Archer would have been killed rather swiftly, considering Lancer also brings superior speed, strength and agility in comparison.

fuck shiro, all my homies hate shira, team archer all day. shiro's fucking goofy goody choises resulted in archer sufering for basically eternity, yet shiro refuses to let go of these ideals that would lead to that. you tripping lmao, archer could have also used his reality marble which would be ggs, second he wasn't even trying to kill lancer in the first place but was using him to hide from caster. though lancer has the strenght and movement speed advantage. archer has greater reaction speed and is a much more better fighter, with much more experience and he is very versatile, he could always switch from close to mid to long range combat whenever he wants and he is efficent in all. in a bloodlusted battle archer negs, I mean there was a route in which shiro (using a bit of archer's power) was able to speed run the grail and neg all the servents present

Spoilers for the Fate route ahead: Archer's reality marble would not have been anywhere enough to kill Lancer. In the Fate route, Lancer survived against Gilgamesh's Gate of Babylon for 12 hours straight, and Archer can only hold up UBW for a few minutes at most
