Eugeo figured out that turning to sword only after Cardinal was already beaten down. I don't think she knew how to do that before Eugeo helped her by removing his "core protection". And she was trying to save all 3 of them, but of course that was such a stupid situation as they would have to fight anyway.

also you can try to explain it all you want but part 1 is super rushed and has tons of plot holes. The cardinal thing was just one of many plot holes that didnt make sense just to add dramatic effect to an otherwise dull story up to this point. Things get better in the 2nd half but there will still be a few plot holes here and there its SAO after all. Shit had to be re written from scratch it was so bad lol.

They probably had to find some way to kill off Cardinal since it would be too much of an even fight against Quinella. In anime, there has to be some despair before overcoming that and getting a power boost to defeat the extremely powerful final boss.

Part one is very dialogue heavy with very little payout in the fights, thankfully part 2 is much better action wise but still suffers from Jesus Kirito complex

Something from Part 2 ties into the movie and the movie is actually good so it's worth the watch. Probably should have watched it before part 1 but nothing really ties into it in this arc.
