Lakan and Fengxian's story is so unfortunate. Also (no spoilers), you might want to remember how Maomao had flashbacks of her mum holding a knife to her when she was a baby, and how she sometimes looks at her pinky finger weird. Small details, but the two objects in the pouch were what triggered Lakan to understand she had been pregnant.

Lakan had been going to the brothel, continuously asking for a courtesan because he believed she was still alive, it was just the old woman kept turning him away again, and again, not letting him see her once since his return, or he'd just end up talking/playing chess/Go with one of the other courtesans. Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but the in the manga/light novel, Lakan was sent away to a military front, which is why he couldn't receive her letters since they were all addressed to his family's home, and no one in his family told him of the letters. Also, since they loved each other, Fengxian figured that if she got pregnant, that'd bring down her value so that he could buy her once he came again in 3 months and learned she was pregnant with his child. It's really unfortunate that he didn't put 2-and-2 together about her deal falling through, and was then sent away before he could learn what happened.

He got told Maomao's mother was "gone" when you're told that it does lead to you thinking she died. However the matron (Old woman) was angry at him and didn't want him anywhere near them at that point (likely growing fond of little Maomao) I do feel bad for Lakan in this as it truely wasnt his fault he got told to leave thought i'd only be 6 months and was actually 3 years. Her mother likely had enough to not work while pregnant but by the looks of the letters and not getting any reply back she fell into desperation. Forced now to take on unsavoury customers she got syph and grew sicker and sicker.

Something that people who read the source are telling me that the little finger was Maomao's pinky-tip and it's supposedly been slightly misfigured the whole time. Apparently you can sometimes see it in the anime? But even looking at pictures of it, it looks normal to me.

I think the reason why he portrayed the situation with impregnating Fengxian as something he did as melicous, is because he feels responsible for what happened to his daughter and Fengxian, also complete shame that he didn't figure it out. He makes himself out to be the bad guy with that courtesan story, because he believes he is a piece of shit for letting the woman he love resort to becoming a streetwalker.

It's definitely still both Maomao and her mum's finger tips, only Maomao's the smaller one as she was a baby. Having those two differently sized pieces was what made Lakan connect the dots that she had been pregnant. Also, the tips of your fingers can grow back! The disfigurement in Maomao's finger is barely noticeable but obviously she'd still know.

Did you notice, the little something alongside Fengxin finger ? It was a piece of Mao Mao finger that her mom severed. We saw it on one of mao Mao nightmare. And that is why she’s always looking at her pinky. Also, Lakan thinks that Fengxin is dead, that’s what the old lady told him

One minor detail that was skipped: Lakan always lost at Go, but won at Shogi. When Fengxian offered the deal to give the winner whatever they want, she offered for Lakan to choose the game they played, and he chose Go, knowing that would make Fengxian win.

He seems to have spent the last 15 years trying to convince Granny to give him custody over Maomao. Because the way she said that Fengxian was gone and then proceeded to break a broom over his head made him think that Fengxian was dead, so he was only offering to take Maomao home. I’m guessing that the only reason Granny still allows Lakan into Verdigris is because the way he screamed while she was beating him with her broom made her realize that he hadn’t intended for this to happen. I can only assume that Maomao still thinks that he abandoned her and Fengxian because Granny only told Maomao her first assumptions to keep Maomao away from Lakan, because Granny doesn’t trust him with Maomao.

So dunno if it was clear but there were two fingers, one Fengxian and one a small stub, indictating Maomao baby finger (the tip) which is why she lookks and plays with hers alot and she had a nightmare around it in one of the previous episodes. I dunno if he is aware of where her mom is but he did visit the brothel often and Maomao would hide from him (in prev ep, they'd let her know he was there) , so he was there to see either Maomao or Fengxian, just not getting acccess. Also dunno if you realised it but Meimei is one of the three princesses who helped raise Maomao and was her mom's serving girl who Lakan played with when she was younger

He probably was full of guilt and shame since while Maomao’s father had to leave because of his carelessness, Maomao’s mother and her became vulnerable and sick and felt the need to help them with everything and also taking a part of raising Maomao’s himself. Its possible that her dad couldn’t bring himself to take Maomao by force because of her indifference toward him and that’s why he let her be knowing one of the people he once admired was raising her and keeping her in harms way. I think part of the reason the Old Lady at the Verdigris House was so mad at Larkin is because to her she “had” to sell her daughter like a lowly courtesan. Fengxian was born and raised at the Verdigris House like Maomao so the Old Lady was probably her mother figure. I get the vibe that Old Lady, in order to save the reputation of the House, had to punish Fengxian for losing her virginity in order for the House to maintain its standing of a courtesan house who’s high-value women have their chastity since that is so important some of the buyers. If it was found out that the most expensive courtesan was a non-virgin and nothing was done about, no buyers would believe any claim that the Verdigris House says about their courtesans. The Old Lady probably feels immense guilt about having to put her pseudo-daughter through that and took some of that out on Larkin and also tried to compensate later on with Maomao and continuing to support Fengxian. (I also had this thought while typing) Another reason the Verdigris House might have turned away Maomao’s adopted father at first was because he was Larkin’s Uncle.

Weren’t the courtesans chasing away lakan when he visited the brothel? It seems like they are hiding maomao’s mom from him. Maybe they’re afraid of how she might react since she has trauma related to him. Meimei doesn’t seem to bare any ill intentions towards him and she was close to maomao’s mom

I feel really bad for Lakan. The woman he loves is deathly sick and his daughter hates him 😔 I read the Manga and still don't understand why Maomao treats him so horribly. Meimei or the step father couldn't explain things to her and tell her that he's a decent guy but just awkward? Especially the step father (Lakan's uncle). I thought he understood him best? Why did he allow Maomao to develop such a hatred for Lakan for so many years. She doesn't have to treat him like a father but damn, at least talk to the man.

This was the most frustrating thing about the manga, in my opinion. They make Lakan seem like a guy willing to do anything to mess up people's lives. In reality he's just socially awkward and is love with someone who (as far as he is aware) disappeared.

That was my thought as well. She wanted him to buy her and planned the pregnancy herself. Even if she was "pure" and never slept with anyone before- all the brothels and medicine sellers in the Red Light District would have access to contraceptives. Not to mention we've seen a couple of stories now from Maomao about that sort of thing happening a lot. Also Lakan sounded so cynical when he told Jinshi there are "ways to bring down the price of a Courtesan." I think he realised what her plan was far too late.

When you think about the outcome of the episode 21 and Lihaku not having to stress to buy out Pairin because she liked him, you realise how tragic this episode actually is. Maomao is most definitely Lakan's daughter because the level of denseness they display when it comes to love is staggering but I guess that's the price you pay when you're a genius.

@Paden Snell Maomao is no better than her mother considering the episode when she tried to imply to Jinshi she wanted to stay in the rear palace when they were doing all those layoffs and he didn't get the message till he talked to her straight up at that dinner party. Luckily for her they talked it out before it was too late. So much crap could have been avoided if people actually talked instead of trying to be cryptic or sneaky.

Make it slightly shorter or a different silhouette. There are actually a few frames where it shows her pinky bends in a strange way at the joint — but from what I know and have heard, the animated version seems to either gloss over / downplay injuries in a general sense, which is kinda disappointing
