yea you're 100% right. on the purely technical level, she did leave them. she probably left to fight grim one day and never came back. yang probably knows this to some extent, so she should've said something like, "my mom left me, and summer rose never came back." maybe idk

Episode 8 is why Weiss' character development in the entire series - especially considering the way she was the racist rich girl back in Vol 1. She really took her promise to Ruby "I'm going to be the best teammate I can be" to heart, to the extent that she's defending Blake - the faunus she used to be so prejudiced against she refused to give the benefit of the doubt - to Yang, the person on Team RWBY that probably cares about Blake the most. Which really makes me smile because all this really defines who Weiss and what she does is in future volumes (not saying what because I don't want to spoil).
