Most of you might remember this piece. I did it a year ago.

What people don't know is that there was a secret part to this commission. The person commissioning it (who prefers to remain anonymous) wanted to imagine themselves in the shoes of someone close to Daisy, the main character of this piece. They wanted a letter written from the perspective of Daisy, written to them! And they wanted this part to be private.

I didn't mind. I don't consider myself a writer, and this extra bit was surprising to me, but could be fun! So I wrote the 'letter'.
And funny thing is, this world seemed to come alive to me! I felt like I was able to hint at a far bigger world than the image alone conveyed.
In the end, I asked if I could make the letter public, but they really preferred it to be private. So I ended up posting ONLY the image.

FLASH FORWARD to recently, when they contacted me again, asking me if I wanted to do a sequel! And I would! I felt there was much to explore in this particular Haunted Mansion with its disappearing nursery.
But what I did NOT want was to continue making the letters private. I thought you guys would get a kick out of reading more about the background of this story! So my condition for doing a sequel was that I could make this part one public as well.

So I hereby give you part 1 of this fun commissioned series. Part 2 will soon follow!

The illustration's cute enough, and the letter is just the cherry on top!

It's fun how when you create a character in your mind and start fleshing out a story about him or her, he or she starts to write him- or herself! It's like you put yourself in the mind of the person you've created and when you think about a situation happening, you just know what your character would do. Thank you, Hoffy, for sharing the letter. and drawing the two commissions. I am curious: Did you have to edit the letter any to post it? That is, did it originally have the commissioner's name instead of "friend" at the top, and you anonymized it? Or did Daisy originally write it to "My dearest friend"?

I anonymized it, indeed. The letter contained several references to a name, the name of the commissioneer. Personally, I don't really understand why they wanted it removed, it was a common enough name. But I don't mind it. And YES! When I draw, particularly elaborate pieces like this one, the character and the story start to live in my mind. Which is why writing the letter was sorta easy. Well.... the content of the letter was easy. Heck, only half of my ideas actually made it in! It's the wording of the letter that took me some time. English isn't my native language, and I also really wanted it to be HER words, not mine. But yeah, I totally get what you're saying, and I do experience it similarly! ^_^

The letter enables me to convey so much more than the pic alone would have. ^_^
