A piece I started during my most recent Picarto stream. The theme of the stream was mystery art materials. This meant I was working with a combinations of unusual, and unfamiliar, materials. This has resulted in some surprising discoveries, but also some failures.

One of the early successes and discoveries from these streams was Unicorn Spit and mixed media on pine or poplar wood panels.  However on Saturday I tried it on olive wood and discovered it wouldn't adhere to my liking, but I'd had multiple offers to purchase the piece. Petina often has the effect on folks.

So I took a the piece home and tried something I'd used on olive wood in the past, oil-based marker pens. Link However once again I was thwarted. So finally I fell back on my old standbys. Colored pencil, mineral spirits, technical pen, and white gouache. Of course I had to start out again on the other side, but I was able to produce a finished piece.

Petina turned out really cute here! It's a shame the Unicorn Spit didn't work out as well as hoped, but unicorns can be temperamental things.... ^_^

Would either Miniwax pre-stain wood conditioner or polyurethane make the wood a better work surface?

That would've made it worse. You need a bit of tooth for painting to adhere to, and with the technique I am using the Unicorn Spit needs to be able to soak or penetrate a little bit into the material as well.

but unicorns can be temperamental things.... ^_^ Very true. Petina is when she's one.
