Today we lost one of the most influential manga artists of the 1970s and 80s with the death of Leiji Matsumoto. Link It's hard to adequately describe just how influential Leiji was to anime, manga, and Japanese pop culture.

His work helped define several generations of fans, and his art work inspired countless other artists and creators.  May he sail the galaxies in peace.

Edit. For folks not familiar with Matsumoto's work here's the opening of  probably the most popular property he worked on. It's the remake of the original, but it captures the essence of the original series very nicely. Link

Many of the things he had a hand in, Captain Harlock, Danguard Ace, Spaceketeers (aka Starzinger) I watched growing up on tv or vhs. It’s sad he’s gone but he left behind one heck of a legacy. Rest in peace good sir.

Captain Harlock is on my list of anime to watch when I'll have time. Sad to hear of the original author's passing. May the stars brighten his path.
