I have an upcoming Equestria dreamscape posting that has some ponies wearing some rather sinister looking sets of armor. To get myself in the mood for doing the art for that posting I decided to do some rather quick sketches this afternoon of various Medieval European helmets. In particular I was interested in sallets and barbutte style helmets. This is was the result of those sketches.

You can see in the German model their modern variant. Excellent protection for the back of the neck.

Great set of helmets! I suppose that ponies wouldn't be able to manage kabutos with full menpo. I.e., those fancy Japanese samurai helms with the war masks.

Um I know that some of a zebra kingdoms in my dreamscape had menpo-style facemask. for their warriors.

That's not neck protection. The helmet is streamlined for cutting down wind resistance! ;)

How much do you study historic horse barding for things like this?

I remember as a kid visiting the weapons and armor wing of the MET (Metropolitan Museum of Art)in New York. I was fascinated my the knights and their horses in full armor. http://sudoku.com.au/PhotosBig.aspx?PID=487&UID=9167&Go=H8-3-1992
