Here is the FULL and UNBLURRED reaction to RE:ZERO Episode 7!!!!

Enjoy!!

Comments

MWS

And now we have what is probably the hardest to watch episode of anime I've ever seen, Subarus cringiness and Entitlement just went through the roof on this one

Alpora

everyone ready for the next episode?

gggoos

I missed your stream, when are you uploading the fate ubw on patreon? Ty!

Sumic

oh man im not looking forward to this one. But I guess I have to watch it just to get to the next episode

Ohms

Oh my gosh just remembering it makes me cringe. I would probably have made some sort of mistake in that scenario but I would not have botched it THAT badly

Marcio Neves

11:10 "the cat girl"... A-hem, didn't anyone told you not to judge a book by its cover? 😁 And that's when Subaru splitted the fanbase into the ones who loved it from the ones who hated it 🤣 And consider this: it is already hard enought for time-travellers to convince people that they are indeed getting back in time. Imagine on top of that not even being able to EXPLAIN that he is traveling back in time and redoing stuff all the time, why he does what he does and knows what he knows

Anonymous

08:20 Wilhelm meant Subaru looks like someone whos seen death. He doesn't know about the loop, he just meant it in the way when you compare the looks of normal people and a veteran who has fought several battles, seen people die, or was near death himself before.

FaerieRose

Rem hasn’t really changed that much. She’s always been protective; it’s just that she’s added Subaru to the list of people she wants to protect.

mjaomjao2

The second hand embarrassment is a bit too much for me this episode but it do be a good one.

Tamus Heath

There's nothing Ram can do wrong, nothing Rem wouldn't do for her. Now she does the same for Subaru too

Anuchek

I always cringe for what is Subaru doing this couple episodes. But on the other hand it makes his character more "human" to me

Lloyd

Oh god it begins?

Ristaroth

plz react to Kakegurui OP

Bitzel

pretty sure he has - Edit: my bad maybe that was just in one of those big opening videos.

Muligan Shinzuo

Finally done with the prelude, now the suffering can begin :P . I love Anastasia (bubblegum princess), she is all about making money. Everyone loves Priscilla because it is for her convenience so the world wills it. Felis has a field day playing around with crush :D

Adam Juríček

yep, will probably cr... I mean smile at the heartwarming scenes that are yet to come next episode :D

Wolfe980

luke struggling to see the link between emilia getting felix to help subaru and subaru saving rem

Anonymous

subaru acted so childishly in the later part of this episode. Imagine a nobody barging into the royal palace in the middle of the royal selection, trashtalking the people in charge and the security guards and only get evicted from the room. He's lucky they didn't execute him on the spot.

Izumi Keiper

Bro literally speedruned ruining his life, and it was as painful to watch as always. I'm glad next episode... Oh, I'm not glad about next episode.

Anonymous

Next episode: The 5 stages of agony 🥲

Anonymous

LETS GOO

Von Yoosten

I wish Subaru would at least say something like "I can't physically tell you, as much as I want to!"

Link

Well, time for some really tough episodes. At least after this one we're past the biggest hurdle in Subaru's character development.

Some0neElse

I absolutely cant stand Subaru in this arc. He went from fun cringe to absolute prick cringe in this one. But i guess he needed a reminder that he is the absolute weakest in this world

Anacik Gabriel

I think this 'you are not to be feared' meant that he made Emilia look like a clown there, and you dont need to fear the clown right

Maurice S

The thing about the dialect that was mentioned from the bubblegum princess as you call her is fairly interesting. Subaru noticed that she talked in an kansai dialekt. This is a dialekt that is spoken in a specific region in japan. If their whole culture, writing system, etc. is different to our world it would seem strange to find a random dialekt of your home country in this world This was once again a showcase of why some people dont like Subaru as a character. No isekai protagonist would ever react and make us cringe this much in the selection. However you need to remember Subaru was a shutin only playing games and reading mangas and he is still basically a child. Its not hard to see that especially after all he has been through he cannot handle a pressure situation like this and ends up reacting like an idiot. Also I give you a little hint. You were right, someone in this room has a connection to elsa! :D Now you just gotta figure out who it is and what the connection is ^^ Could be a lot of people :P There was a very big part that was cut out of the anime in this episode that is very essential to the future of the show. However it is possible that it will revealed in a future season instead (not mentioned at all in season 1 or 2) So if you want to know what was cut to include it in your theory stuff read ahead if not.. BIG SPOILER BELOW When Subaru was in the Carriage with the 2 others he and Al talked for some more and in their conversation Al said this: Besides, I am the only person in this world that can understand your agony... You were summoned too, right? To this world. This sentence basically confirms that subaru is not the only person that got transported to this world ad Al directly states that he also got transported to here. BIG SPOILER ABOVE

Alpora

the part about the accent/dialect is about how she (Anastasia) speaks with a real life Japanese accent called the Kansai accent/dialect. It is an accent unique to the Kansai region of Japan, so Subaru is surprised to hear it in this "fictional" world.

Alexander

I forgor how difficult the second hand cringe was to watch, but I managed to push through

Rur

Please don't talk about future episodes. It serves no purpose. If anything it spoils the experience.

Dark_Rider

and his suffering begins.

Mokiki

I remember back when the anime just aired that this was the point where a lot of people were really split on Subaru and started disliking him as a protagonist. Because they hated how ugly and selfish his personality became for reasons that didn't make sense. Personally I think it shows the humanity inside Subaru and that what he is going through despite the resets leaves more and and more wounds that he'll eventually needs to deal with.

Anon

what they meant by "not feared" is that subaru showed them that emilia shouldn't be taken seriously and saying he was a "fine attendant" was a sarcastic jab

Tamus Heath

If Episode 6 is "YESSSS, SUBARU FIGHTS!!" Episode 7 is definitely "NOOOOO, SUBARU FIGHTS!!"

William Armstrong

I think some of your confusion on the comments in the early part of this episode make sense after the later reveal of the candidates for the thrown. 7:50 Emilia means she is getting Subaru a healer because he was injured helping her out (both in the capital and the mansion) 9:10 This really just implies that Willhelm can tell Subaru has been through some life-threatening situations 54:00 In the fight with Julius, Julius basically meant that he had said things that would normally be punishable by death, but because of his association with Emilia this was not possible, so he was beating him instead to show him the error of his ways, It's implied he is doing this because if he hadn't the other knights would have done even worse things to Subaru. your felt predictions were on point, it's not a particularly hard plot point to pick up on, but you did get it right earlier and your prediction was more precise in its accuracy than for most people. I don't wanna say too much about the relationship with Emilia and its impact as that could be a spoiler, but it is clearly a demonstration of how feelings of love and attraction can go awry and produce bad outcomes when not channeled properly. Reminder watching the full ending song/ sequence next episode in episode 8(story required) and that I think it would be good for you to watch some of these openings/endings in context even when not story required. This episode was the last appearance of opening 1

Bobby Vang

I'm ready for this arc. Let's go!!!

Fay X84

The funny thing is that Subaru and Emilia don’t see the word “Special” the same way or completely opposite. From his perspective it means important person or the girl he loves and wants to protect. While Emilia sees it in a negative way, because she is always compared to the witch of Envy. Therefore she doesn’t want to be called “Special” and she wants him to treat her as a normal girl. ———— Also in the end Subaru took out his anger on Emilia because he’s starting to be psychologically unstable. Important events got reset, he died many times in the most atrocious ways but he has no one to help him get it out because of the curse.

ArtKi

PEAK CRINGE! -------- 2:31 Love at first sight by BEST GIRL! -------- 8:59 [Luke wants a cool title] Luke, the reaction fiend. --------- 12:25 I *finally* figured out the Curry Udon thing. Subaru is pissed at Juilus. He wants to warn him to back off from Emilia He can't SAY that. So he states that he's about to give Julius a warning (with his trademark scary face) and warns him about something meaningless. --------- 18:47 Why worry about us posting spoilers when you post them yourself? -------- 24:46 I would not be surprised if Priscilla rolled a 6 on a four-sided die. ------- 52:30 "Why'd they randomly show that knight?" They showed the 5 candidates and their matching knights. Subaru wasn't included because he wasn't in the room and Emilia doesn't accept him as her knight. Julius - Anastasia Felix (or Felis) - Crutsch Al - Priscilla Reinhard - Felt BTW, I'm glad to see Al in the s3 trailer. "A man of mystery"

FullHeart

Execution is literally what he was supposed to have been after his actions. Julius beating him up like he did in such a public fashion was him being nice and saving Subaru's life while appeasing the public opinion.

Lloyd

Lukes reaction to the "felix is a guy fuck you you are gay hahaha" reveal tells me he is perfectly ready for jojo.

Alpora

a note for the future, keep watching the episode until the (second) end-of-episode card where they show the name of the episode on screen. (even if the credits roll)

Kevin

When the old man said Emilia is noone to be feared I think he meant it like she is not commanding the respect she should.

Hwiyeop Kim

Oh well, this is the episode showing why subaru is being hated by so many people xD

Anonymous

I don’t think that’s completely true. I do believe she has slightly let go of the “i am my sister’s replacement” thing

Ron Farmer

This is def subaru's low point, but what else can you do when you hit bottom other than grow? Some very very very good episodes coming up. I hope you have tissues near by... Thinking about what is coming gives me chills. ❄️❄️❄️

Anonymous

That's it, here we are... the point where this anime goes from good to Masterclass, prepare your mind, it's going to suck :D

Eliana

"the decent of someone into madness" 💀💀💀💀💀

kloos

Here we go again. We can say that the intro ended and real story begin.

David.Perez Perez

Luke, what you said about feeling second hand embarrassment about Subaru is so true. When I first watched I sort of wanted to stop watching because of that episode but I'm so glad I didn't. Rewatching Re:zero makes see how special that episode was and shows how great and complex of a character Subaru is in anime.

Karen Porter

his instant obsession with Emilia is honestly extremely creepy IMHO. And that's all it is. It's a selfish, idol obsession. Every step he took in these episodes was completely uncalled for and wrong and he should be ashamed at himself. He got exactly what he deserved for his actions these episodes. He does redeem himself soon though thankfully, but man these were hard to watch without just wanting to punch the TV screen lol.

Anonymous

Incorrect. They feared Emilia because of her resemblance to the Witch. Subaru stepping out of formation and causing a scene prompted Emilia to declare herself properly rather than how meekly she had done, which is likely why Roswaal smirked as he started up. Subaru then proudly states his devotion to Emilia, showing what she can inspire in someone.

Eliana

Just to clarify Emilia's point of view in this episode: Subaru was hanging around Priscilla(one of her rivals), then also came to the palace following her, and also he broke his promise twice (went to the castle and also used magic). Let's not forget everything Emilia has done for Subaru was in the first loop, so he has literally no reason to do anything for her ever as far as she's concerned. Therefore she feels deeply guilty because he's almost died twice for her, while she hasn't been able to heal him properly, and that's why she's getting deeply indebted to Felix/Crush/another rival in order to heal Subaru, and he's been completely dismissing her efforts.

Eliana

I used to wish he said something in the lines like "I'm cursed so can't explain", but thinking back we've already been explained how curses work in this world, and what binds Subaru would feel more like a "contact", so it'd be REALLY suspicious to most people in this world

MZ41D

bro copy and paste this comment on Youtube upload he is more likley to read there instead of here

Frentzy

what do u expect from a 17y old... "tell me you forgot how it was to be young without telling me"

syaimaral

Well let's see it from emilia's perspective, met this guy who found my pendant and saved my life incidentally in some shack in the slums. Went to reward him and save him, but he suddenly wants to join my staff and proclaims he loves me. Then he gets hurt again while serving her. Brings him to the capital to get him healed AGAIN. Subaru, I'm here on important business. Stay in your room, don't get hurt again, I need to make a good impression with the royal council. Don't fuck things up for me. I'm already prejudiced against for my appearance. He shows up again and interferes. Completely embarrassing her in front of every important person in the nation. Even the wise men disapprove of her for lacking the ability to control the behavior of her own servants. He disrespects all the knights and ends up in a duel where he almost gets beaten to death AGAIN. Then you tell me you did all this for me. If you are hurting yourself because of me, this is an unhealthy relationship. You need to go.

Lu C

Seem to me that Subaru missed to recognise a villainess character... Priscilla looks like a typical one...

ArtKi

Note the reaction of the knights in mid-beating. They were shocked and no longer want to kill Subaru. MIssion Successful!

Keith Merrington

LOL! - Luke predicts the candidates perfectly, but then fails to remember the names of the "knight head guy" (Al) and the "cat guy" (Felix).

Tasel

Kansai dialect is sorta like the "New York City" accent of Japan. distinct but not the norm. to quote wikipedia- "Because of such associations, Kansai speakers are often viewed as being more "funny" or "talkative" than typical speakers of other dialects. Tokyo people even occasionally imitate Kansai dialect to provoke laughter or inject humor."

Anonymous

What Wilhelm meant when he said, that Subaru's eyes are the eyes of a person who has experienced death several times was more like he has witnessed multiple Situations where death was involved.

Luke

Priscilla has Kazuma's luck stat, but no Aqua to drag her down.

Anonymous

Felix, "cat guy," is a world renown expert in his class, that being water magic. Of which, centralizes around healing. He is also a member of a competing party. So acquiring support from him to help Subaru would have definitely been a challenge for Emilia.

kloos

I think that from this point we see the reality of what this show has to offers

Anonymous

subaru's cringe here is needed for what's to come It's gonna be so much fun watching all of it again

RGB98

This episode is always hard to watch, Subaru makes sooo many mistakes. Anyway nice reaction as always

KariaP

i don’t know who told you that but the “hand gesture” in italy is not bad. It’s used when you don’t understand something. An example: A says to B: “i know you stole the honey” B is confused, can’t believe his ears, he does the hand gestures and says “what did you just say i did? nah, no way you just accused me of that” the hand gesture is used when you don’t understand something, so you ask it again. it can either be retorically, because you can’t believe what you heard or just because you didn’t understand what someone is saying even though they said it multiple times (maybe because there’s a lot of noise, so you’re confused about what the other person is trying to say).

Dethrox

ah yes,, only episode i dislike in re Zero mostly cause Subaru is being the biggest dumb dumb in the universe :DD i literally dont get his reasoning here and its actually satisfying to watch him being beat halfway to death lmao.. he deserves it imo

Touhou RS

Yeah, 4th time seeing this episode and it's always a brutal one; just every single thing he does I'm screaming over because it's so dumb, and then the ending slaps him in the face with that.

Just Mate

Truly interesting how Subaru mentions Kansai dialect (a group of Japanese dialects), while Al just accepts it and tells him that that's normal

James Perrott

Rem has changed. she was not open with her feelings around ram or anyone in the mansion, she didnt seem to express herself much at all, and was stuck hating herself for literally being born She finally moved past all that thanks to subaru

James Perrott

That is not the case at all. The man was being genuine and not sarcastic, theres not even a hint of sarcasm there

James Perrott

Dont know why youd dislike an epiode cause a character made a stupid mistake and showed humanity and weakness Sounds like you want a perfect flawless bland MC, dunno why you even like re zero then

Pyzlnar

> It's hard to think that maybe Subaru sees himself as a character in a story that progresses rather than an actual human living in this world. That's it! You're in the money! The clues have been spread through the whole series thus far. Finds Beatrice: "NPC Found!" Rem is good at somethings while Ram isnt: "So this is the pattern where one sister is good at some things but bad at others" Subaru HAS been treating this as a game. So far people treated it as funny/weird antics, but that gets you not very far in an actual serious situation. What this episode really highlights... is Subaru's flaws. As some already said, one of the hardest episodes to watch.

Von Yoosten

for now we haven't seen him try. It'd seem more immediate to me than "you don't understand".

Dethrox

Well that Ova was released after season 1.. so what you should do was watching it after season 1 and say oooh i see thats what they were doing... and not watching it now and say.. oh.. this and that and now i have a theory and oh boy looks like i was right lmao :DDD

James Perrott

(Please Read!) Pleeeeease just for one time only, dont watch episode 9 of the directors cut and instead watch episode 16 and 17 (same content) of the original version of the show The directors cut ruins one of the most memorable scenes of the season IMO by replacing the ending song with less impactful OST. The scene is MASSIVELY downgraded without it, I really dont want you to miss out on how good the scene original was watching it this way wont affect anything else, itll just make one scene so so much better, please watch the original 2 episodes in just this one case

Anonymous

And with this episode the prologue of Re:Zero is officially over. From here on out it’s a whole new story and I can’t wait for the next episode. The next episode is probably my favorite episode of any anime ever.

Anonymous

Also don’t skip the end of next episode. watch the entire credits the whole way through it’s pretty important for the episode.

Kaiki Deishu

I +1 this comment. definitely the only disappointing thing about the directors cut

Cronosoul

This episode really split people when the anime aired, but it made me really love Subaru as a character. He's possibly one of the most human characters in anime. He's just a normal kid, not even that, he's a shut-in with poor social skills, and on top of that, he's got this horrific trauma of dying over and over again. Him 'breaking' here is indeed ugly, but god, he's literally died for her over and over again, and she'll never be able to understand just what he's been through. It's just an ego, mixed in with a good chunk of trauma. I think people are so used to protagonists in anime being perfect, that they forget how much trauma would really fuck up a person's mind

Sebastian Stróż

It's always sad when actual good writing gets discarded because some people cant understand any character that's not one dimensional.

Marcio Neves

Oh, wait. Next episode is 14 and... 15!!! Oh, man! 😨

Kaiki Deishu

these 2 episodes are the 2 hardest to watch for me xD with all the suffering going on, subaru being dumb is the worst part in the show xD

Suichoku

Well he has said he has a bad name memory, gotta nerf him somehow. Too powerful otherwise.

Kaiki Deishu

just in case you missed the comment earlier by someone else. you should watch episodes 16 and 17 as the normal episodes instead of director's cut because of some of the small changes made to the episode's endings.

Alvaro Zevallos

When he was talking to the knights. I felt sad for subaru, not because he was being enbarassed, but what he has done so far for her is on par with the sacrifice a true knight would do.

Ryan DesVoigne

Just adding that you should watch episodes 16 and 17 individually, and then continue with the directors cut. I know multiple people have mentioned it, but I just wanted to make sure you don't miss out.

BanTheUndead

Subaru has no control over his magic and he hurt his gate repeatedly using it (twice without letting it heal) during the mabeast fight. Amelia has a complex about people owning her things so she tries to make it sound like she is doing herself a favor by helping them (or in this case she is paying him back for saving the village), so she got Felix to agree to heal Subaru.

Dethrox

i dont mind and i like Subaru and his showing up humanity and weaknesses through the entire show but this episode was pretty dumb.. :D like and it wasnt a mistake.. my dude went on a mistake rampage.. xD like there wasnt a single scene where he did something right lol

seansky

Anyone know if UBW reaction is gonna be on Patreon?

Sebastian Stróż

It should be. Normally it would be up by now so no idea if there is some issue or Luke just didnt have time.

The Pots

the reason why your theory is spot on is because you watched the OVA before this episode. that OVA, even tho it takes place before this ep, it was supposed to be watch after S1 OVA showed several scenes that spoils the current arc you're in including seeing Reinhard and Felt together (that's why you got the idea when in normal watch, Felt arriving as a candidate is a huge surprise)

Yuki

Nope I’m waiting for it too, I’m so excited for this reaction!!

Anuchek

This Wednesday ep gonna be fun hehe

Obscuremango

Ok one big thing on why Emilia is so angry with a broken promise. [Deleted] This episode (2nd half) is what made so many people hate Subaru. And Rem is romanticy in Love with Subaru, she adores him. Emilia is the spitting image of Estella the witcu of Envy, it's why everyone never treats her nice. They cloak with the cat ears of Emilia's has [delete] What lovely people who can't take some honest mistake, I love when. People are 'polite' about it.

Obscuremango

Can't wait for you to do the next OVA before you see season 2

Hitsters

That, and her supposed knight is more of a clown than anything else

Anonymous

These episodes are so much harder to watch the second time around

Hitsters

I've watched the scene multiple times, for me he's sarcastic, you don't have to be overly dramatic for that. And I can't see a single reason for him not to be sarcastic. Plus Emilia doesn't take it well at all and makes a point he's not her servant.I mean, it could have been for multiple reasons, but still. Oh and Subaru is extremly wrong on almost all subjects on this double episode .

Anonymous

Also, no pausing in the second half of next episode. Well i guess i cant stop you. But you might find yourself unable to pause it.

Kevin V

Next episode (the second part - what would be episode 15) is my favorite episode in all of anime. Hope you enjoy it.

CORE_703

i started watching this show just for felix lol

Ricko Andrew

It's a lot more sense in the novel. Actually there is a lot going on in this episode but got cut which is fair, but I do really recommend just read for this chapter.

Ricko Andrew

Oooh weird. Why's the dialect from japan got here? Hmm~ why the town name is kararagi? Hmm~

Rafael Souza

Stop spoiling stuff, whats ur problem? The cloak stuff, the promise stuff, all of those are revealed later in the series, why would you go as far as spoiling it now? Do you just enjoy screwing people's enjoyment, is that it? People rly suck, you should delete this

Rafael Souza

Just adding that you should watch episodes 16 and 17 individually, and then continue with the directors cut. I know multiple people have mentioned it, but I just wanted to make sure you don't miss out. The changed the OST of a scene, completely screwing it. Just watch episode 16+17 separately and then go back to the directors cut!

Daniel Turchan

So much information in this episode and not much explanation unless you REALLY look hard and dissect information, 1: something they don’t tell you, that hood Emilia wears with the ears is enchanted and makes the wearer unrecognizable, u can guess why she wears it based on context. 2: Julius said normally a death sentence is put on those who act like he did, but only beat him up, this accomplished 2 things, again, not going to tell you, just drop hints, not spoiler just for story understanding. 3: take a look at how the rest of the world treats Emilia and how a certain Knight does, is he really so bad? Anyway, just some thoughts for you since this episode is PACKED full of info, and I know u r good with storytelling so I didn’t straight up tell you I just dropped some hints for understanding the world so far. Love your reactions, this is my favorite anime of all time, I’m so glad u love it too. Have a beautiful day.

Obscuremango

What a rude way of putting it, I'll delete that bit, I remember mixed bit of information.

John Löfgren

When the Counsel said "at least he has made it clear you're not to be feared" they meant that in a "you're not a worthy rival for the throne" kind of way rather than not to be afraid of her.

Louispul5

"what is the point of Subaru being here?" He said it himself, some pretty lady summoned him, you'll see.

Obscuremango

I also remember receiving this info during this part of the anime, so ye, please don't be rude

Beowolf Chow

I always took it as "no attendant of the witch of envy would show such a lack of fear of her that he embarrassed her in public. The fact that your servants don't fear you, is a sign that you're harmless"

Beowolf Chow

You are going to want to delete the promise part too. That is also revealed in direct character dialogue.

Obscuremango

Ah I put that but together ealry in on my own from hints, sorry, but tha is for being a polite one on this

Beowolf Chow

Thanks for another great reaction Luke. Your analysis is insightful, and I look forward to seeing how those ideas develop with time. You asked a couple questions that are more about translation issues than spoilers, so should be safe to say. When the old man Wilhelm Van Astrea the Sword Demon said Subaru "experienced death many times," he means more in the sense of Subaru having lived a life full of tragedy, or being a veteran warrior on the battlefield. Not that he is resurrecting, but that he got the impression that Subaru is very familiar with the presence of death. When Priscilla (The ginger in red) bit into the Appa and you asked, why would you eat it if you didn't know what it was, you hit the nail on the head later on with the comment about always rolling 6s. If the world always works out in your favor, then nothing bad can happen to you. There was no chance of the appa being poisoned, rotten, or probably even tasting bad to her. So it amused her to try. While Subaru might think he is the main character sometimes, this woman seems to have the world telling her that she really is one. Also, how privileged and pampered do you need to be, to have never seen an unpeeled apple? That every time you ask for an apple, your entire life, it comes pre-peeled and sectioned. Wild. And speaking of Subaru, when he is breaking down in front of Emelia, and going "You should have a greater debt to me than you could ever repay", I think we are hearing it the same way Emelia is hearing it, as really creepy and twisted, but I think Subaru's meaning is slightly different. He's done all the things that the media and games he has played have told him he needed to do to "win." He saved the girl, saved the village, he was the hero, he bends over backwards doing things to help her and put in the time on dates, and yet she isn't responding the way the games and anime told him she should. She isn't saying she loves him, she isn't saying she owes him everything, she's MAD at him. And so his comment (I think) isn't "you should have a debt..." but "You're supposed to have a debt..." and he is raging at the world not meeting his expectations while saying the line that he has been told the love interest is "supposed" to say to hero "I have a greater debt to you than I could ever repay". Still creepy, and still an issue, but a slightly different issue.

SkyMina

Ikr , its fine if you dumb and make mistake. But subaru seems doesn't really want to learn and take advantage with information that he has.

SkyMina

It not exactly about "good writing" , people have a view that they stand for in which result to splitting opinion. As much as the good writing is expected, both views must be appreciated as what this episode made them to concluded.

HGK

Next episode quickly! I don't want this version of Subaru! I know he done this for Emilia but not like this.

WhiteDragon6

Btw I recommend watching the credits in the next episode, they are really well done and fit into the episode.

Aiyuu

Great analysis and explanation of Subaru’s mindset. But I don’t think Subaru’s words are creepy or twisted at all. I think his way of thinking, while sounding very negative, is very humane. In real life, i think this is what most people would unconsciously feel as well, of course not to the extent that Subaru is saying. But surely, when we do something good for someone, obviously that’s because we love them and that we hope that the other person would understand and love us back. It’s a natural expectation. Same as Subaru. Normally, just like us, he would never think about such selfish thing like “you owe me a debt” to the per he loves, but after being misunderstood by that same person, his frustration bursted and said awful words that he doesn’t mean. That’s very humane. And their quarrel is also very real. they are both worried for each other that they accidentally hurt the other. This is how a lot of our daily arguments with family and friends usually are as well. In this kind of conflict, it’s not rally about right or wrong but understanding.

Thamor

It's surprising you didn't notice 2 persons having Von Astrea in their names. Well it's not spoiler as both their names were declared in same episodes, the old man in beginning was Wilhelm von Astrea and Reinhard von Astrea you remembered. What their connection is well future will only tell. Please don't pause in next episode the ending song, just let it play fully till the end as it belongs to the end credits scene to get the full impact and I am interested to see will you recognize that song.

Thamor

100% agree Luke needs to fix his bad habit of not letting end song play out for episode 15 and fully let the episode run to the end as it's part of the experience and intentionally done that way.

Thamor

Unless you read the novels and know exactly that is what Subaru was running through till this point. As I am anime only, I disagree on your game analogy for getting the girl and how Subaru is thinking for Emilia. This is most of all 2 people not really knowing enough about each other, Subaru has advantage because of his extra time through his deaths with Emilia, but Emilia really has only seen the one side of Subaru. He is most of all like everyone should have learned in episode 8 that he is really psychologically damaged already from all the deaths he has gone through. Just because he is now again moving happily, doesn't mean that pressure of not being able to tell anybody what he has gone through isn't there in his mind constantly.

But "'Felix' the cat" - pretty iconic name. And you can't get much simpler than 'Al'. Still he seems to have the main characters names down :-)

Peter Parker

what a depressing episode that was. I remember watching this for the first time and drop the anime

seansky

same..... took alot of motivation to force myself to finish it few months later...... these few ep are reason why i really really really dont like Subaru..... im even skipping this ep's reaction to calm the blood pressure (sorry luke :D).

James Perrott

Please just let the credits play out next episode, you can talk over them but just don’t pause it

Lloyd

I was smoking 2 joints hopefully to black out and not remember watching the episode. But you cant just LEAVE my man Luke hanging here bro.

CoreTendency

Luke gets it. Subaru is good but flawed, and his psychological well-being is at a low point right now. The show is just as much about him having to live with his curse as it is about any particular challenges he has to overcome by using it. What we just saw was Subaru having a mental breakdown, and it's something that can happen to anyone.

Zeraph

Let the pain begin

The Luminary

im ngl, subaru is one of my most disliked main characters in all the shows ive watched. He is so ungodly fucking stupid that it actually blows my mind. At least in this first season I havent finished this whole show yet. Hes not bad, hes not trying to make things harder for people. But His very existence actively makes everyone elses lives miserable. And the show plays like inspirational music in the background while he is doing nothing but being a idiot and making their lives harder. Thats my only complaint about this show, is just how annoying subaru is

Anonymous

That’s the point of the show my guy… he is not supposed to be a likable person.

The Luminary

Its just cringy and embarrassing to watch him. ReZero is a good show and I like it a lot, just subaru is literally the worst part of the entire show.

Luca Bellan

What the council guy means by saying that Subaru showed "Emilia is not to be feared" is that having one person stand up for her sake like that surely means she is not an evil witch. Remember that the fear of the Witch of Envy is deeply radicated in this world

FullHeart

np dude that's why they made shows like Demon Slayer. You can go watch MCs with zero flaws and we can watch this

Sebastian Stróż

It's always amazing when people say stuff like this. Just shows how "complex" writing goes over some peoples heads.

Found the list of Reinhatd's op powers. It's a looong one: Sword Saint: Reinhard is the current Sword Saint as the current holder of the Divine Protection of the Sword Saint, which he inherited when he was 5 years old. Swordsmanship maxes out, and become able to draw Reid, the Dragon Sword. The blessing of being able to "break the unbreakable". Arrow Avoidance: He cannot be hit by projectiles and long-distance attacks won’t hit Reinhard as the blessing causes thrown weapons such as knives to change their trajectory, effectively making it impossible for them to hit him, as shown in episode 3 of the anime, the trajectory of Elsa's thrown weapon was changed when aimed at him. Arrow Guarantee: Any projectile he uses is guaranteed to hit the target. Magic Resistance: No curses, debuffs, or buffs can affect him. Fire Avoidance: 80% reduction from fire damage. Wind Absorption: 80% of wind magic is absorbed. Earth Resistance: Earth magic has an 80% reduced effect on him. Water Reflection: 80% of water magic is reflected. Darkness Immunity: 80% of dark magic is nullified. Light Sharing: 80% of light magic is shared to another target. Swiftness: He can move at superhuman speed. This affects mounts as well. Riding Mastery: He can ride any animals. Initiative: He cannot be ambushed, and all initial attacks from Reinhard connect. First Attack Immunity: The first time an attack is performed at Reinhardt, it always misses. Proceeding Attack Immunity: The second attack and all following attacks miss him. Rain Blessing: He gains power in rain. Sun Blessing: He gains power in sunny weather. Night's Blessing: He gains power during the night. Morning Blessing: He gains power during the morning. Mind Reading: Vague understanding of what's on other people's mind. Item Mastery: Able to know how to use any item he holds. Unarmed Mastery: Very strong even without any weapons. He can use a swordless style of fighting in which he uses his hand like a sword. Blessing of War God: Able to use any weapons masterfully, this extends to even things like iron pipes or disposable chopsticks, he can easily use them as weapons to cut through things. Blessing of Lake: Can walk on water, can also be used to submerge himself in water if he wishes. Blessing of Mist: Mist does not hinder his view. Blessing of Cloud: Can walk on clouds. Blessing of Lightning: Lightning will never strike him. Sodium Knowledge: He will never get salt and sugar mixed up. Taste King: No matter how or what he cooks, the food will come out delicious. Blessing of Frying, Steaming, Boiling: Complete mastery of all the cooking methods. Clothes Designing: Can design fabulous clothes that will surely start a fad. Master Teacher: His students become successful in learning. Training Mastery: Can train not only his body but also other people, to their maximum potential. Poison Immunity: Immunity to all poisons. Illness Immunity: Immunity to all diseases. Power Bleeding: Bleeding actually makes him stronger. Blessing of the Phoenix: Upon death, he is granted a "continue?" once. He has already used this once. However, while it has been stated he can't receive the same blessing endlessly after he uses Blessing of the Phoenix, he will acquire Blessing of the Phoenix continued, and so on and so forth. In other words, he can resurrect endlessly. Judgment: Enables Reinhard to know of any Divine Protections his opponents have. Unknown Blessing: It has been stated that if a tactical nuke was used on Reinhard it wouldn't go off. Wind Evasion: A blessing that only ground dragons should have, it enables Reinhard to be unaffected by the wind and not encounter any wind resistance while running. Telepathy: Allows Reinhard to tell other people his thoughts telepathically. While it's normally used to tell close friends certain thoughts, it can be combined with singing to increase the strength and effect range. Precognition: He has a super sense which through his intuition alerts him of danger, and distinguishes all attacks in advance.

while cool there are definitely spoilers in here so you should probably delete

I like the show when the mc is not perfect, they make a mistake and then fix it. Try to be better every time.

Ricko Andrew

I don't think subaru gonna want to just suicide. In his mind, he doesn't know where the next checkpoint gonna be. It can be just the same checkpoint and he gotta do sll that again with current messed up mindstate. So I think Subaru is not gonna do suicide just for this. He is gonna live as long as he can.

Steven H.

This episode always gave me second hand embarrassment. And with the counsel guy saying that Subaru showed that Emilia is not to be feared, I always took it as If one guy doesnt listen to you, how do you expect a country to.

Lucas Gianini

Just going to point out that the outro song for this episode is in no way inspirational if you actually listen to it or look at the lyrics in the context of the series. You are right about him making people's lives harder at this point in the series though, but that's kind of the point.

WhateverItBe

You are mostly right my friend, but this is not a show that a happy white knight saves everyone. Subaru is a normal teenager, and like Luke said, I think many people in the real world won't do any better than him in his situation. I think his character is very realistic, and I can recall I know quite a few people being cringy like him in their teenage time, but grow up a lot after a few years. No one is perfect from the begining. Moreover, the only time that "His very existence actively makes everyone elses lives miserable" is in this capital arc, and this is worte on purpose to show a man grow up step by step.

WhateverItBe

Agree with most of what you said, but I would like to point out that he is not having a mental breakdown - not that serious. I think he is just being afraid to be dumped by Emilia, cuz he know how miserable and stupid he looks at that moment. When he covered his mouth, actually he already realized that he is not doing all those things for Emilia, but for himself cuz the intention behind those actions is to win her love. For those who watch this series for the first time : What he said is just like "I have done many for you, why don't you love me back?" We all know love doesn't work this way, and please remember this for later. For those who watched this series before : --=SPOILER ALERT=-- When I first watch ep.18, I was so angry and instantly shout out "what's wrong with the fking author?" But by watching it with Luke again by this point, I suddently understand that maybe this is what the author want to tell us, "no matter what you have done for your love, they don't necessary to love you back in return, love doesn't work this way." In this ep is for Subaru, in ep.18, we all know what will happen, and also the one who always talks about "I have done so many for you, why don't you return with love, but show so much love in Subaru". I think it is the whole Capital Arc about.

Hatoma

How to say that you don't understand that show at all. Yeah dude, you should go watch brainless anime, Re:zero seems to complicated for ya.

Tommy Jensen

I think it's funny how you basically called the plot with the royal selection during the alleyway scene. I'm truly impressed! 👍

Matt Tucker

I dont think that what he was saying, its that Emilia inspired someone, that her attendant obviously cares for her, which means she is not someone cruel or evil.

Matt Tucker

Woooo boy you cant be farther off base. Subaru is a great character. Is he a likable character? Not always, but he is written amazing. He is selfish here, for sure. He just thinks at this point, he needs to be with her to prevent unfixable situations.

Matt Tucker

Just adding that you should watch episodes 16 and 17 individually, and then continue with the directors cut. I know multiple people have mentioned it, but I just wanted to make sure you don't miss out. The changed the OST of a scene, completely screwing it. Just watch episode 16+17 separately and then go back to the directors cut!

RudeusGrey4t

There are probably spoilers in here even from my light-novel-reading perspective, so I'm afraid to look at this comment.

RudeusGrey4t

Subaru didn't fall out of the carriage because of she-who-must-not-be-named. That was because of how a land dragon's Wind Repel blessing works. They never directly explain it in the anime, but the land dragons have a blessing that essentially makes travel in a land dragon carriage miraculously smooth. It's not just the wind--they even somehow negate the bumpy sensation of the road. However, this blessing doesn't have unlimited range. Subaru stuck his hand so far away from the carriage and the land dragon that he suddenly felt all the force of the wind whipping around on his fist and fell out. Side note: land dragons cannot always use their blessing. They can activate it for a long, continuous amount of time, but after coming to a stop, the blessing must be "recharged" before it can be used again, even if it was only used for a few minutes. Honestly, that is far from the only thing skipped over in this episode. There are boatloads of lore that are dropped around this time in the source material that the anime said "Yeah, don't got time for that. Maybe in season... 4, no wait, 10." If I were to go into detail about everything this episode skipped, this comment would be long enough to be the script of an entire youtube analysis. I'm not even exaggerating. For example, you described Anastasia as "a spoiled child", but if all of the candidates had been allowed to give their long speeches explaining their origins and viewpoints, you would've concluded she's a natural entrepaneur who rose from rags to riches because of her greed and as such has a strong track record of success which looks promising for the future of the kingdom's economy should she become queen. There are pros and cons to each candidate that go deep, very deep.

Nico Plett

wait... I'd argue he is, except for some moments, a really really likeable character.. at least in my book.

Ron Farmer

I read through it and deleted everything I thought was a spoiler. I'll do so again to make sure but I'll delete the whole thing if you think it's better to do so

Anon

I wonder how far you got in the show, what you say here shows a fundamental lack of understanding in the message the show is trying to get across, I'd suggest finishing the show or taking time to consider why subaru thinks the way he does based on the person he is and his past experiences

Infinteginger

I love subaru but these episodes are rather painful.

RudeusGrey4t

Like I said, if I went into detail about everything that this episode skipped, this comment would have been about 30x longer.

RudeusGrey4t

...I started reading through it. Then I saw the pair of blessings mentioned in Isekai Quartet. "Wait, wait! If he's immune to the first attacks against him *and* he's immune to all other attacks against him--so any attacks, really--then how are you supposed to beat him?!"--Ainz Ooal Gown

Regill Derenge

I ahte subaru ... with all my being lmao

Mr. Dog

These two episodes are the most painful to watch as its where Subaru is the most flaws. Subaru is an easy to relate because at one point in our lives we have the same ego and immaturity as him. Subaru in these episodes reflect the worst parts in us ourselves. This is why it's hard to watch. It's cringe and just over all bad. But we've alll said things and done similar things that subaru did in this episode. So yeah it hits a nerve.

killilu

yea these next few episodes were the hardest to watch for me, bro was just fumbling.

Tom Boggess

Okabe seeing felix: dare ga otoko da. But he's a guy.

Tom Boggess

subaru blatantly white knighting emilia in front of literally hundreds of white knights.

KaiChannel

The backlash he had after those episodes was so ..stupid. People like to think they would do better in situations like this and say the characters are stupid or egotistical forgetting the context of the story and often the age of the character

2023-12-04 14:54:07 The reason why I skim thru these 2 episodes is not because I don`t like them outright hate Subaru, but because I feel bad for hi,. Especially because even the viewers see him as bad and don`t try to understand him even tho they know his story. I just expect every reactor to say Subaru is stupid/egotistical [and he is but who doesn`t have ego and desires? forgetting he died many times and even if no one asked for it it`s normal to expect a bit in return, he was fine with just living with them too. Subaru desire to help is genuine, but because no one remembers all the pain he went thru,it ends up him having expectations that can`t happen since the rest don`t remember but that doesn`t erase his pain. It is egotistical but you can see the logic too,he died for her so many times of course he would want to be her prince. He is just every day 16 y.o too. Yes this is the most "nice guy" thing he had done but it isn`t because he wants anything more the to be around the rest. The situation is so complex because he had died so many times and can`t tell but desperately wants people to acknowledge the pay he went thru for them

In real life where you haven`t died for them it can be as bad you being the "nice guy" type but we know Subaru isn`t. He just wants to be with her and every small thing she gives him is precious to him. The situation with him is difficult because he not only had died for her but also remembers it. And is also just regular 16 old guy. People expected him to act mature, and till this moment he basically did what he could. This is one of his biggest mistakes, and yes it may be stupid but also even if it is,he isn`t bad person

KaiChannel

I doubt since he was mortified to die at the oni ark, so he knows it will be permanent not like in a game. He may expect at lest some love in return which you can say is bad but it`s also true he died for them many times, the fact that they don`t know and act like he didn`t do much is what hurts him. Of course is logical that they don`t remember but you can see why he would be hurt too

Siilan

It's tough to get through and makes me feel bad that Subaru just straight-up doesn't listen to anything Emilia asks of him. But that's part of Subaru's flaws and what makes him, and his character growth later, so special. I don't hate Subaru, or these couple of episodes, but I do hate how Subaru essentially just thinks with his dick the entire time. These episodes and Subaru's stupidity were needed for setting up the character development to come. He needed to do something stupid like this to go through the shit needed to realise how his thinking was flawed, and finally dislodge his head from his ass.
