I don't think the 100 million deaths due to Communism is far off. There were some 20 million who died in the Cultural Revolution, and another 20 or 30 million due to Stalin. That's just for starters, and you're already within a factor of two. Add in a million or three here and there in the many Communist "revolutions" and wars, and pretty soon it adds up to real numbers. Whitewashing the appalling record of Communism is just dishonest.

He's not "whitewashing it", he's being intellectually honest. Is it possible that 100 million people were killed by Communism? Sure. But that number itself is an estimate, and it's impossible to say definitively how many of those deaths were solely Communism's fault. He gave the example of the famines. It's true that the famines were made worse by Communist policies, and so Communism could be blamed for some of the deaths. But how are we supposed to tell apart the deaths that happened because of Communist policies, and the deaths that happened because of the famine that would have happened regardless? We can't, and so to cherry pick the highest estimate of deaths caused by Communism is just as dishonest as pretending Communism didn't kill anyone. Also, by the same token, if we're going to blame Communism for all those deaths, then realistically we also have to blame Capitalism for all the deaths that it has caused, and the number of people killed by Capitalism is likely much greater than the number of people killed by Communism given the appalling number of people who have been killed over the past few centuries because society put profit over human well being.
