My instinctive reaction to the Dune Trapper is that if I used it, it would be as a thing the PCs know about or spot, like the tripwire you know is there but might need to risk anyway. I was all set to write here with a clever comment about "but what if it's the only source of water within range, wouldn't that be interesting?" and then you went and said exactly that. It might be a fun depiction of local knowledge to have the group see an NPC get water by throwing a jug with a rope tied to its handles into the Desert Trapper oasis from a distance.

Yeah, I think there are things you can do with it, but it takes some scaffolding. I think if you have a particular approach to the landscape and its hazards it could be quite useful.
