Hi there everyone, it's time for DF Direct Weekly #107 production to begin - and that means we're asking you for your topic suggestions and of course, your questions!

We'll be discussing Redfall's 30fps launch situation, some Cyberpunk 2077 RT Overdrive, and we may well take another look at TLOU Part 1 after a barrage of patches.

Do let us know if there's any other burning news we should address - but for now, let's be having your questions!

Greetings, DF. I, Ambatukam Salamat, have returned. Watching your RTX 40 Series reviews, I started wondering why the performance uplift from Frame Generation is somewhat inconsistent? Even with a high frame-rate to start with, some games only get a ~20% performance uplift. I’m sure the tech isn’t as simple as inserting AI-generated frames, so what other factors contribute to this?

With many developers struggling with the low-level nature of DirectX 12, can or should Microsoft release a new API that offers the same new features as DX12 but with the high-level abstraction of prior DirectX versions? Or is the low-level nature of DX12 simply necessary to achieve the new features it adds?

Hi, I have a 3080, a 5900X, an LG CX and 40mbps internet. What is the best way for me to enjoy Cyberpunk Overdrive? 4k with DLSS Ultra Performance, 1440p with DLSS Balanced, or GeForce Now Premium?

With formally exclusive PlayStation games like the last of us struggling with performance on pc. Do you think that Sony studios will actually reduce the scope of their first party games slightly so that they are more universally pc friendly? Would they be less likely to make games like ratchet and clank rift apart since that will likely not run very well on a lot of pcs and may generate more negative press and user reviews?

Why aren’t there more powerful APUs on the market from AMD? It seems like the split pool of memory in modern PCs is not ideal, and it’s leading to the issues with 8GB cards struggling in newer titles despite having the GPU compute power. Why can’t we PS5/Xbox Series X class (or better) APUs (even if it means abandoning ATX form factor and socketed CPUs)?

Anonymous

Because of memory bandwidth limitations. On consoles, you can pair that APU with GDDR memory so you the GPU won’t be bottlenecked by memory bandwidth. There’d be no point in making such an APU for PC without a way of pairing it with the proper memory.

Anonymous

Is there a reason you couldn’t run Windows on a PC with an APU paired with GDDR6/6x memory instead of DDR4/DDR5? I get that that would be non-upgradeable and everything would be soldered to the main board.

Question for Eagle eye Alex : For all the pixel counting and frametime evaluations, how can you miss the most obvious thing in PC first-person games ? No self shadows ? It's the first thing I look for, and sadly it is missing in almost every game... Totally immersive breaking imho. What is your opinion on this ?

DarkRod99

Hi guys, with the recent news of RedFall coming out with a 30fps only mode. Why do you think the reason for that move is? RedFall doesn't look graphically intensive and doesn't use RT or any modern technologies A.K.A is using UE4. So why lock the game at 30fps? Lack of time perhaps? And is this an indication of what things may come with Starfield, when it releases?

Hi Digital Foundry! In Alex' brilliant August '21 hypothetical into whether 4K DLSS were possible on a next-gen Switch Pro, 60 fps via DLSS appeared less likely due to predictable constraints from wattage in a hybrid device. Is DLSS 3 frame generation a game changer there or will 60 fps still be hard to achieve with the thermals and battery life in a handheld device?

I've passed down my launch day PS4 to my niece and nephew (ages 8 and 11). Since this is their first non handheld console and the PS4 is entering the market curve where used discs for older titles are getting very cheap, do you have any all ages recommendations from John the Gamer Dad or other panelists? P.S. it always amuses me when Rich pronounces my last name with a German style W.

Hey DF! The final pre-release trailer for Tears of the Kingdom dropped, what are your thoughts on it? I'm personally super excited for it with all the additions they are adding and they seem to be building the story up much more than the first game. Hopefully a game of the year contender?

Suicide squad was just delayed to February 2024, just curious on everyone's quick thoughts. Do you think that this will give it enough time to fix some of the complaints that people have with the game? Even with a 10 month delay I doubt they can change the gameplay in a significant way, but maybe they can tweak the way the progression works and completely remove any and all live service elements.

Hey DF! It was just announced that Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League was delayed until February 2024. I know it was discussed in a previous DF Weekly that it seemed too close to completion for a complete rework but now with this delay...thoughts? Do you think they are completely removing the games as a service features and going back to the drawing board?

GameBreaker

Hey DF! Did you see the Half Life 2 RTX modification that was done recently? What are your thoughts on it compared to Portal and Quake RTX, and what do you see going forward with the RTX Remix framework now out in the open for people to use however they like?

With Street Fighter 6, Tekken 8, and (possibly) Mortal Kombat 12 on the way, along with consistently good games from Arc System Works and SNK, we seem to be on the verge of a new golden age for fighting games. As the genre has almost completely moved away from the arcades they started in, to home consoles/computers, how would you like to see them evolve and take advantage of this change? and does anyone on the DF crew have any particular favourites when it comes to fighting games?

Anonymous

There’s no technical reason I suppose it’s just that no one makes anything like that. OS’s might also need to be tweaked to support it.

Anonymous

Thanks for the answers, I just thought it was something interesting to ask. AMD might just not want to upset Microsoft and Sony by releasing hardware similar to the consoles and that’s the real reason. But then again, we haven’t even seen any 7600G/7800G APUs this generation either (so desktop APUs can’t be much of a priority).

On the "E3 2002 Time Capsule" video, John shared a little bit about his TV journey, going from various CRT models. then to plasmas. I'd love to hear more about the different TVs that he's owned, and his perspective on the strengths and weaknesses, and how the tech has advanced (or regressed). I'm a little bit of a TV addict myself, having owned 20+ over the years, and I love hearing John talk about this stuff.

I'm now 100% happy with TLOUp1, especially after v1.0.2.1 which makes mouse/camera smooth at any framerate (previously you had to lock at 60 fps, typical console port fail). I have zero crashes, zero rendering glitches, it's really a 10/10... but, I have a 7900 XTX. Would be nice to get a mini review refresh based on the game's current performance on a range of GPUs. IMO would be fair to call the game good if it can do a locked 60fps 1080p with medium/high settings on any dGPU that's reasonably current with at least 8GB VRAM (say 2070 or better for NVidia, 5700 XT or better for Radeon).

Hello, DF! Hope you're all doing well. This isn't really a question but more of a friendly request. What do you think about revisiting the topic of Denuvo's impact on game performance now that more games have removed Denuvo after launch (i.e. more data points)? I feel like a dedicated PSA video on the impact of Denuvo on CPU performance is much needed at this point. Strictly speaking about performance, I feel like there's rampant misinformation about Denuvo that inevitably comes up in any discourse about a game with poor CPU utilization.

RTX Remix is open source now, what games do you think could benefit the most from a path traced makeover?

Hello DF! Forgive my lack of brevity, but I joined the Patreon today after feeling compelled to weigh in on Redfall’s 30fps cap. Personally, the discourse around this and Gotham Knights has been incredibly disheartening as somebody who has always loved the filmic look that 30fps can achieve. I believe video games are art and developers should have the freedom to make artistic choices regarding visuals and performance. I can’t help but feel that the call for an eventual “60fps minimum” on all console games diminishes gaming as an art form and does a disservice to decades of wonderful gaming history. What do you think?

Hello, did you get to review or preview Horizon Forbidden West Burning Shores? Any first impressions you can talk about?

Hey DF, new member here. Question/Observation : Do you think game optimisation is a hindsight for studios ? I mean Quality Assurance takes a lot paid people. From a commercial view, it's much easier to put the game out, and let the "internet" feed you the data that a paid QA can't even provide in a year, then patch it ? I might be pessimistic or paranoid, but money wise I think this is common practise :x

How is it that metro exodus enhanced edition with infinite bounces performs so much better than cyberpunk overdrive mode with 2 rays 2 bounces.?

Capcom has announced the end of support for non-ray tracing versions of RE 2 and 3 on Steam in July (https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/883710/view/3680045594774528910?l=english). However, it appears they also removed the RT options in the game as well (https://i.imgur.com/ZopsYqv.jpg). Your thoughts on that?

Anonymous

What are your pet peeves with hardware benchmarks? Mine is when reviewers don't take into account RT for CPU benchmarks. The 5800X3D is a great cpu, but the benefits of the extra cache is mostly nullified in my experience when RT is turned on.
