Hey everyone, Rich here with a quick Patreon exclusive. Today, I started work on the Final Fantasy 15 benchmark - a PC download you can grab now. It supports native 4K, it has all of Nvidia's GameWorks stuff running, including the dubious return of HairWorks... but how does it look? And come to think of it, how does it look in HDR? Well, jump to this link and you can download it: https://www.digitalfoundry.net/2018-02-02-4k-hdr-final-fantasy-15-benchmark-footage

First impressions? Well, it's virtually impossible to run it smoothly, owing to the fact that the benchmark only supports windowed mode or full-screen borderless, meaning that there's no way to synchronise the game with the refresh of your display. In terms of 4K60? Yeah, no chance - on max settings, a GTX 1080 Ti seems to average at 37fps. Standard mode seems to be in the region of 43fps.

So for this video, I've added a 30fps cap in order to try to level out the stutter as best I can, but kept all bling maxed out. It would have been great to get the full settings available for tweaking (HDR looks a little washed out?) as well as standard v-sync on/off support, and actual metrics would have been cool too. The lack of v-sync on/off actually makes FCAT analysis impossible so in the here and now, all I can really tell you about FF15 on PC is that you're going to need a pretty powerful rig...

Any way, enjoy the vid!

I was really hoping for a good port job on this, even put off playing the game on PS4. I wish Square Enix would just give their ports to a team who aren't going to release another hack job, Sega seem perfectly capable of it. Edit : Having run the benchmark myself it isn't nearly as bad as I feared, it maintains a stable framerate at 1080p on standard and high on my 1060 even with my old i5 (which is nearly maxed out a lot of the time). 4K even on their reference charts seems to be where performance falls off the cliff. I don't get what it is because while the game looks good it doesn't seem to be doing an awful lot new. AA also seems to be pretty low on the benchmark, I'm betting that will tank performance at all resolutions. The textures on the food though, I've got to get an HDR screen...

How do we download these videos? When I go to the page, it says "To download this video you need a Digital Foundry Subscription."

You need to click login, then it should ask you if you want to allow the site to connect to Patreon which makes the download links active.

I'm watching this on my 1440p 32" and the video itself isn't impressive. It doesn't feel like 4K at all. The image lacks of clarity and I can see compression artefacts. Shadow of the Colossus video 4K HDR is just at another level of quality. That was marvelous to watch. About the benchmark, my godness I ran it on my R9 Fury Nitro. Horrible to see my graphics card at a 1060 level.

Keep in mind that these are merely presets - we don’t know exactly what settings are in play, or at what level.

Any chance you guys are gonna do a 1080p60 video? My 960 ain’t hitting 60fps on standard+ settings so I wanna see what it looks like nearly locked at 60. oh, and 4K? I got like 2-3 FPS. Literally. Regardless of quality setting. I didn’t even let the benchmark finish running at 4K.
