Pine Barrens is also the title of the most famous, arguably greatest, episode of The Sopranos, in which two of the characters get lost in the woods and deteriorate mentally and physically in rapid and comical fashion. I'm sure the writers have seen that episode - there's some thematic overlap, with Laszlo and Nandor arguing just like Christopher and Paulie in the Sopranos episode. There's also a bit towards the end of the Sopranos episode where a giant monster with low slung balls and a button cock sings along to Bon Jovi, but sadly it's only available on the extras, and it's very well hidden.
