been looking forward to you seeing this one, it's the first one I saw.

The message I took away from this one is "Respect NDAs!" since Cooper caused the whole thing by switching his phone back on, which he only did to leak company secrets for more money! In fact, the way I interpreted it, the whole sub plot about the shady company using illegal tech and killing tourists was an invention of Cooper's mind, presumably caused by his own guilt about trying to leak information. His whole experience was a freak accident (and presumably his was the only death?), so we don't even know what the game was supposed to look like. Cooper had the memory of the old Resident Evil-esque mansion from their old game in his head that created the environment (he mentioned playing it all the time in college). Maybe the whack-a-mole bit was purely what he imagined was going to happen with the circles that were placed down before the phone rang, and the real game's graphics would actually look considerably worse!

I actually test new games for a living and have to sign NDA's regularly.. In no way am I ever gonna break them if this is the outcome!! This is the first episode I have always shown people new to Black Mirror lol

Contex - It's Just A Ride

I hope you're liking this. All I can say is Season 4 episode 1 will be your favourite, I'm calling it lol

Austin Stratton

Yes.. that's one of my favourites too.. Playtest, White Bear and S04E01 are the three I tend to show people who have never seen Black mirror

It's crazy to think that all of what happened to him was in his mind in the 0.04 seconds of the 'mushroom' being activated. It reminded me of Joe Rogan talking about a friend of his that took mushrooms or something and lived an entire life with a job and family for three years while high for 30 minutes or something. I don't think there willl ever be a game like the one in this episode, where your own mind creates the horror. Repressed memories from childhood would come out. The tester lady would be saying 'What doyou see?' and they'd be like 'It's uncle Dan from when I was 7, he's hard!'. It would be an ethical nightmare for the developers as much as anything.

I guess some people are not suited to acid trips.

I like the game references. Charlie Brooker gets this stuff right - I remember reading his reviews in old gaming magazines. They even mocked up a cover of Edge magazine for the episode. Edge is the only magazine I've bought every month for the last two decades, it's like the Sight And Sound, or Rolling Stone, of the videogaming world. I guess the mansion is meant to be a nod to the iconic mansion from the first Resident Evil? The Japanese dev guru himself has elements of Hideo Kojima. Not renowned for scary games, more for Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding, etc. but he did make a legendary demo for a never-released game; PT it was called. It was pretty scary. And Kojima is the kind of developer who loved trying out weird ideas in his games, like having to fill a light meter on your Game Boy Advance by playing it outside, or reading the save data from your PS memory card in order to convince you that a boss had psychic powers. The developers as a whole might be more like From Software, whose head of development is infamously private and secretive, They make Elden Ring, Bloodborne, etc. Cool stuff.

Re. playing horror games in VR, I definitely wouldn't want to do that. Not pure horror. I'm okay with horror elements mixed in, but when it's just that constant anxiety and tension without any release I don't enjoy it, and I know VR would make it ten times worse. The only game that was just too scary for me was Alien Isolation. Amazing game, really did a fantastic job of recreating the feel and look of the original Alien. But holy mother of god is it nerve-wracking. That xenomorph has always terrified me, ever since my dad made me watch it when I was eight, and there's a section in the game that just broke me. It's a long corridor with a ceiling vent halfway along and a left turn just before the vent. You know the xeno is going to come down from the vent as you approach the left turn because it's scripted to do so, and it comes down and wanders off in the opposite direction so you can sneak to the left. It's scripted NOT to kill you so long as you creep along. But the tension from approaching that vent, over and over again because it's just after the nearest save point...it broke me. I just didn't want to play anymore and probably went and played my sister's Harvest Moon or something to calm down.

Saul

...Also, the main guy in this episode was so good at walking the line between horror and comedy. I've seen him in other stuff but this was impressive. He's really funny.

Sam

Season 6 has just been announced for June so it will be out way before Josh finishes.

First time playing Resident Evil 7 in VR was generally terrifying... That Eveline is one spooky bitch when she's right in your face
