Important to add that they’re not resigning from the job completely, just from their Ministerial posts (eg running the Department of Social Affairs), so they’re still staying as politicians but just not within the Cabinet (it works a bit different in the US as you don’t need to be an elected official to head up a Department, the President can just appoint somebody). So they’re going back into the main pool of politicians and hoping they can get a better post in a cabinet ‘reshuffle’

Not technically true I don't think. Every one of them is an elected party member from a constituency. But only say, 20 people will be in that parties cabinet. There's a reason you don't hear about Nick Clegg anymore, he lost the election in his constituency at some point after the coalition dissolved

In this instance Dan Miller is a junior Cabinet Minister and Hugh is the Cabinet Minister, they’re resigning (or planning to resign) from the Department, not as constituency MPs

Ah what I was saying was in the US you don’t need to be elected to head up a Department, they’re Presidential appointments and often include non politicians
