Fantastic reaction, Josh! I guessed you'd really enjoy this one. It's in my top 5 episodes of the whole show definitely, and I love it because it's much more about the characters as individuals rather than the usual focus on relationships and friendship. Gary's premature embrace of middle age and Tony feeling insecure. Deb gets some great character development here too. I always feel there's an air of superiority from her side but here she's reminded that as much of an idiot as Tony can be (and he really can be!), she has more in common with him than a highly intellectual student. She still has no intention of sleeping with Tony but I do think it's a bit of an epiphany for her. Gary vomiting at the rave directly on to the camera is such a memorable moment. Gross, but memorable, haha. I am a bit triggered by the shade thrown at Watership Down as it's genuinely brilliant and one of my favourite novels ever. I also used to collect The Guinness Book of Records so always feel personally attacked by that scene. 😂 "We're watching Hetty Wainthropp Investigates, that's what's wrong with us!" is my favourite line of the whole episode! It's not a bad show on a rainy day etc. but is exactly as you say, Josh, an old person show! 😛 Great episode and always feel like every episode of MBB flies by! Never seems like 30 mins!

I thought the Hetty Wainthropp Investigates bit wouldn’t raise a laugh from Josh but he’s right when he says it sounds like an old person show just from the title.

did they change the music for this release ? the rave track in the club and pub are different i think

Anonymous

You are most likely correct as the BBC can use any music they want for broadcast, and it might have been too difficult to get the song for the VHS release.

From what I remember it’s the same music used in the original broadcast for both scenes.

The shade thrown at Watership Down is indeed bizarre and makes me think that Simon Nye (the creator and writer of MBB) knows absolutely nothing about the book. Watership Down is a wonderfully rich story, with strong parallels and allegories towards our own society; it deals with the concepts of a totalitarian society and man's need to fight back and obtain freedom from a dictatorial government, as well as deep thematic elements, dealing with life, death and man's destruction of the natural environment. It's a book which has made for fascinating analysis over the decades. I guess Simon Nye simply thinks that it's a dumb kids book about talking bunny rabbits. I dread to think what he would have to say about George Orwell's Animal Farm.

The 1st pub scene seems to be the Never Mind The Buzzcocks theme now. Can't remember it being like that before...
