Great reaction! I've always found this to be the weakest episode of the show, but it's still enjoyable

Anonymous

First watched this show in the late 80s when my cousin had all the old VHS tapes so I knew the intact versions long before they were cut. But I happened to watch this episode during a BBC rerun a while back (bit of a guess but I think around 2005) as it was just on….even back then they didn’t butcher the racist copper joke, they completely removed it!! So it went from the car guy ringing the bell and cut to the demon appearing at the door. I think they cut the policeman driving off in the car as well so he was just nowhere to be seen! The Beeb have been a joke for years now though.

Anonymous

Neil's meltdown when the lentils explode still makes me cry with laughter!! Nearly fell off the bed when the police bit came on I'd forgotten about that bit! We're so coddled now it's strange seeing that on TV. Can you imagine that on TV today!!?? 😂😂😂

Saul

I was watching a viral video the other day, it had blown up on YouTube shorts, and it was the scene from Four Lions where the wannabe-rapper pretends to be a suicide bomber at a university debate, but then ends up pulling party poppers and saying 'oh just because I'm a Muslim you think I'm a terrorist??!' Someone uploaded that scene, added some ominous music quietly underneath it, and I'm not exaggerating, I think 60% of the comments BTL were saying stuff like 'if he was white he'd never get away with that' and complaining about the logic of the character's justification. The majority of the commenters thought it was real and used it as an opportunity to unload on Muslims and 'plickle creckness'. So I can understand why the BBC just cut the policeman scene in this episode. I'd love to live in a world where people have the ability to live with jokes like that and not blow them out of proportion for the sake of a few extra likes on Twitter, but we are seeing the slow suffocation of subtlety and nuance in real time thanks to social media. You can explain things as precisely and honestly as possible, you can explain the context of the joke and the intentions of the writers, the long anti-racist history of everybody involved with Young Ones, and it just doesn't matter - there's a certain subsection of people who genuinely aren't interested. the facts are a complication, and they don't want complications. Then on the other hand there are the kind of people who see a joke like that and think the joke's message is 'those were the good old days' - they're the kind of people who see a joke like that and start spouting off about how you 'can't say anything anymore'. Frankie Boyle talks about them, because they latch onto his humour - they come up to him after a show where, say, he used the n word to make an anti-racist point, and they tell him 'good for you Frankie, this PC nonsense has gone too far'. The intentions of the jokes go over their heads completely. And they make up a big chunk of the audience of Jimmy Carr, Ricky Gervais, Boyle, etc.. They unironically enjoy the racist jokes. That's part of the reason they turn up. Both those groups - the pseudo-progressive, ultra-PC finger-waggers on the one hand and the reactionary 'can't say naffin anymore' cavemen on the other - have no grasp of irony. They're both completely dishonest and see the world in black and white. They're both responsible for the current climate which, unfortunately, means the BBC have to butcher jokes like this one in Young Ones.

Saul

BTW Josh, this is entirely my own opinion but I enjoy hearing your take on things, and I enjoy hearing your take on politics just as much as anything else. I know people are sick of politics being injected into everything, whether it's by conservatives or by liberals, but your world is so different to mine, your upbringing is so different to mine, and your perspective is genuinely interesting to me. I don't see that many black people in the media who are interested in the more...geeky...part of pop culture, who are interested in sci-fi and sciencey stuff and anime, and a lot of stereotypically 'white' things. And politically it's interesting to hear what you think about race, schooling systems, the projects, stuff like that. I think you underestimate how interesting that kind of stuff is to a lot of us. Or at least it is to me, and I think you shouldn't hold yourself back for fear of causing controversy. I don't think you would cause any controversy anyway, but if you want to talk about something you should do so.

Saul

I'd rather they cut it entirely than left it in the show mangled as it is. It's borderline nonsense when it's edited like it is in the clip Josh watched at the end there, it's better just getting rid of it than having this nonsensical half-joke in the episode.

Anonymous

Well said. Similar to your point of the racists latching onto humour, and curiously and coincidentally because they were the band in this episode, Madness suffered greatly from fascist skinheads thinking they were one of them.

BelladonnicHazeyJaneII

Completely agree, I love hearing Josh's thoughts and opinions on things when he does share with us and would happily listen to more. I really like the differences in perspective, as you say, but I also like hearing about the similarities when there's something he watches that he really relates to.

Josh I love your videos and reactions But When you said the police are racists I was like ahhhhh. Not every police officer out there are racists But I'll still watch your reaction videos. Glad your finally reacting to the young ones it's really funny. Dave

Michaela

BRILLIANT reaction Josh! I’m so glad I was able to give you the link to the full versions! Btw my name is pronounced “Mikayla” - don’t worry, lots of people get it wrong 😄 Absolutely loved your reaction to the racist policeman! I agree that things like that should be left in - Rik, Adrian, etc part of the alternative comedy movement in the 80s, so they were left-wing, progressive, etc. So it’s not the same as old comedies where minorities would be the butt of the joke; these guys were deliberately making the ignorant police the butt of the joke 😄 It’s a real shame when people fail to see that and censor it on behalf of others.

Saul

Yes, I remember the NME referencing that phenomenon with Madness. Whenever you make art with double meanings there'll be people who just don't get it. Bruce Springsteen had to watch as Born In The USA got co-opted by just the people the song was criticising. The Wachowskis had something similar with The Matrix. It must be frustrating.

Typical of the BBC to cut jokes like that as they want to be all lefty but for years they covered up for peadophile saville. The whole point of the joke was to mock the police for being racist and below average intelligence. Granted the use of the “n” word doesn’t wash well these days but this was from the 80’s when people were a lot less tolerant through ignorance. Still a funny joke though when you can see it’s intended purpose

JOSH: The point of the ending with the alien spacecraft hovering above their flat is that Neil is sat there, totally oblivious to its presence. The group spent the entire episode moaning about how bored they are and that nothing interesting ever happens to them, yet in a single day; they had a terrriost break into the flat and be executed by the special armed forces, mere feet behind them, as they watched TV; a demon from Hell run around trying to kill them and then an actual alien craft hover above them. They didn't notice any of these things occurring and continued to say how bored they were. That's the joke.

I'm so glad you got to see this one! They also cut out the "Darling Carrot, could you ever love a cripple?" joke. Going to pop onto my soapbox. Please indulge me: The reason they do this isn't (as somebody else has suggested) because they're being all "leftie". If it were left v. right, a joke highlighting police racism would qualify as pretty left-wing. The point is to be as uncontroversial as possible so as to please everyone, leaving us with a very bland product. The BBC has been like that for decades. That's why they've been so utterly toothless when dealing with right wing demagogues such as Trump, Farage and Johnson. Steps down from soapbox. So Josh, as I was saying, I'm really glad you saw Michaela's link. I had never got the link between the dumb police, the IQ article and the racist cop before (I was a kid, I couldn't quite parse it) but your reaction was absolutely priceless! Just to fill you in with a little context about alternative comedy (I'm not sure if it was the same in the US but I know comedians like Emo Philips did fit into the same niche). Basically before the Young Ones and their generation, casual bigotry was completely accepted on TV. That generation was the first that valued inclusion, diversity and to an extend political correctness. So to put this on TV wasn't hugely controversial. So to highlight this so starkly and bluntly probably didn't raise as many eyebrows as it would have in about 2005. If this joke were created in 2005, the BBC wouldn't have put it out. Again, because... how did I end up on the soapbox again? Anyway, the BBC didn't read the letters in those days. Look back at the goldfish joke with the potato which actually satirises that kind of (ugh) "cancel culture" in the early 1980's (I feel dirty now), specifically in this case, animal rights activists who might write in about a goldfish being killed on TV. Steps off.

Saul

The BBC have no option but to thread the needle between those on the very far left who complain about them being mean to Corbyn, and the constant, existentially perilous criticism they get from the right simply for existing. Unfortunately the right are vastly more powerful and numerous than the BBC's left-wing critics, and their constant threats to dismantle the Beeb, wipe it off the face of the map, carry genuine weight. The right have the power to do that - which means the BBC has to tread incredibly carefully around politics and editorial impartiality. I think you're right that they overcompensate in that direction, but the conservative establishment has used the cudgel of abolishing the license to bully them for decades now, and every year the threat becomes more real, with countless streaming sites muscling in on iPlayer and terrestrial, scheduled TV gradually disappearing. Given all that they do a very good job of remaining relatively neutral. Would I like them to have pushed back more when Brexit was happening? Definitely, but that was an almost unprecedented situation. As with Trump's election, absolutely no-one in the media came out of that looking particularly good, and the BBC relatively speaking were better than most. If I want the least biased mainstream news source I will generally go to the BBC. People inevitably explode when I say that, but then fall silent when I ask them for a superior alternative. The Beeb get endless stick from both sides(much more from the right admittedly) but it's a sign that they're doing their job that neither the left nor the right are ever satisfied with them. The right in particular won't be satisfied until the BBC's owned by Murdoch and morphed into a British version of Fox, complete with a British Fox News. So to Josh: take the relentless criticism the Beeb gets with a pinch of salt. A lot of it is just people's political biases speaking. It's one of life's cosmic jokes that the fairer and more neutral you try and be the more people you'll end up pissing off.

John Taylor

That reminds me of an interview with Warren Mitchell who played Alf Garnett in In Sickness and In Health I once saw. He was approached by a fan who said " I like your show you make fun of the coons" to which Warren replied " No were making fun of racist idiots like you!"

Richard M

Absolutely agree with you with a the stuff you've said about the BBC. They'll always be too right wing for the left and too left wing for the right. In the end, its an amazing organisation.

Josh

I'm enjoying this show and your reaction, it has its moments, it's nothing like I was expecting. I expected it to be more similar to Bottom.

Saul

Hang in there. It really does get into its groove as you understand the characters a little better. I remembered it as being much more similar to Bottom. Also, the surrealist non-sequiturs break up the flow of the main episode in quite a frustrating way and Rik and Vyvyan are more different from Ritchie and Eddie than I remember. The surrealist break-aways don't go away but they stop being so frustrating. I never liked them but I don't remember them being intrusive enough to get in the way of the central brilliance of Rik, Vyv and Neil battering/humiliating/drugging each other. Stick with it - if you liked the interplay between Ritchie and Eddie then you should like Young Ones, especially Rik, who is basically the worst person in the world. He's like a hyperactive, petulant, idealistic version of Ritchie, and IMO the best moments all revolve around him.

AfterWorkReactions

I stated there is an issue with racism within police departments. I also stated there is an issue with corruption and bigotry no matter your race or position when people obtain power. I gave example as well, where did I just say all police are racist as a closed statement? I'm genuinely curious, my editing can be jumpy and maybe it sounded that way to you. Do you have a time stamp I can check out ?

AfterWorkReactions

Thanks, bud I would really like to talk more about those sorts of things, politics, life experiences, etc. I just dislike some of the responses I receive when I'm just speaking about my personal experience. Especially the vitriol I receive via message and email lol.

Anonymous

I never said you said all police are racists But I was just saying in general that not all are racists because some people out there think they are. And it was near the end after the young ones had ended when you were wrapping up the video can't give the exact time stamp.

Saul

That is really depressing. I just assumed, like an idiot, that you’d get no pushback because your opinions are so reasonable. I couldn’t imagine what anyone could have a go at you about. But the internet really is just a mad place. Anonymity makes cowards brave. I understand wanting to keep yr head down though. I swing between engaging with hateful people and just wanting to move to a different internet. Shame there isn’t one.

Rob Walters

People's criticism of the BBC is just their political bias, you say..... That criticism exists and arises due to the BBCs overwhelmingly evident political bias!!!!

Anonymous

The BBC isn't just one thing with one political bias. If it were, Farage wouldn't have had the amount of oxygen from the same organisation that shows so much multi-cultural, LGBTQ+ and other such content. With that in mind, tell me what you perceive as the BBC's political bias - please.
