I think I'm right in thinking that this is part of a wave of what was coined alternative comedy, beginning in the 80's. As a sort of answer to the typical sitcoms of the 70s. A kind of reply to some of the more traditional, a bit kitsch, wholesome family or just innuendo comedy that typified some of what was produced during the 70s. TYO helped to pave the way for a lot of the shows that you have seen and are yet too. I look forward to more dumbfounded expressions mixed with belly laughs at the bizarre. In part it was that 'new comedy' made for the next generation of cool kids, who wanted something different from what their parents watched. In reality it's just a return to much of that age old popular physical comedy. Blended with surrealism and the political commentary of the time. It'll be fun to see the balance of exactly how much of this goes over your head and what tickles ya funny bones. 🤣

It was funny watching you being so baffled by some of the parts :D Not a great episode but still entertaining I think. You'll definitely struggle with some of the references but in a way I don't think it matters that much because it's just so absolutely mental. Just enjoy it for what it is and don't overthink it and I think you'll grow to love it 😄

Filthy, Rich & Catflap on steroids

Neil the hippie tries to kill himself so much you'd think he's under some kind of hare's curse to live forever ;)

Andrew

I think I seen Nigel from Easternders,he was one of the pilots ,I also seen one of Del Boy's ex's, ,she was the one on the tv show stood up on the balcony

A bit disappointed that it's the shortened, edited down version. Dunno if you can get hold of the the full, actual show that originally aired on BBC because they've removed a bunch of really good gags from later episodes to shorten it for modern TV. Also there are supposed to be musical acts every episode (because that qualified it as a variety show on BBC in the 80's and meant a bigger budget). Anyway, Mr Bolovski, it's never really explained who he is but my guess is that he was wanted by the KGB or something. Yeah though, it's an absolutely mental show - they didn't really know what they were doing in the first season, which is why it's so 'anarchic' and why young people in the day absolutely loved it.

BigChanChan

This show probably wouldn't get in the top 300 UK TV comedy shows of all time by most critics criteria so it's no surprise that is marmite TV and only going to be funny to a very select few.

AfterWorkReactions

I was like shocked at some parts it was so crazy 🤣🤣 luckily when I don't get a joke or reference someone will leave a comment explaining it for me.

mrtheevilmage

I felt like it was shortened but as someone who thinks the band 9 below zero are record scratching lyricsts who could'nt create a tune with more than 3 vereses even if their lives depended on it I really did not mind them being editied out of episode 1

Josh - Nice one! mrtheevilmage - It's the thin end of the wedge. Yeah, they're a pretty mediocre pub-band, but I've seen the rest of the episodes on iPlayer and it's missing some classic jokes that just shouldn't be cut. Trust.

The other pilot was Chief Inspector Grobbelar from Bottom - 'Parade'. Acted by Andy De La Tour - long term Rik Mayall associate.

Keith Pratt

You need a steaming service like britbox or Amazon Prime. The episodes are all mostly over 30 minutes on those. On BBC iPlayer many of them are exactly 29 minutes - edited down to fit in a 30 minute timeslot.

If anything's a missing link between Young Ones and Bottom it's Filthy, Rich & Catflap

This show was always regarded very highly as a comedy, and also as a major turning point in UK comedy television. Whenever there was a 'Top Sitcoms' poll on TV in the '90s and '00s the top comedians would cite it as a critical moment. "At last, something for us!" - Stewart Lee. No one denies its historical importance, even if they don't like the gags.

Balkyne

Honestly forgot how all over the place epsiode 1 is. This is all in all a very funny show though

Z is for Zed

I'm all for historical importance, but I'd rather travel on a jet than a biplane. It may have paved the way and there are certainly times when it works well, but it's an incredibly bumpy ride at others (also Alexi Sayle probably only made me smirk twice over the course of the whole show despite how much airtime he gets).

BigChanChan

Alexi Sayle was never funny anyway to be fair, hence why he disappeared into the ether... He basically robbed a wage when he was on TV.

Saul

It's very highly regarded by critics, so I'm not sure about that claim. Bottom was the show that critics were less keen on, for understandable(but incorrect :) ) reasons. Alexei Sayle is divisive, but mainly because of some of his political views. He could be brutally, searingly funny. He's shite in this for the same reason most of the interruptions to the main gang are shite. But anything with Rik Vyv and Neil interacting is gold. Unless I'm misremembering things horrendously the show improves big time over this episode. Rik's character in this ep(which I've never seen, or at least don't remember) is more of a snarky, baffling anti-hero, whereas he quickly turns into the pathetic, desperate virgin that anyone from anywhere in the world can recognise as an archetype*. I cannot believe that my younger self would have been as raucously entertained by a show that kept on like this, so I'm confident it improves significantly, or at least starts delivering great moments. *I bet there are tribes in the Amazon where one of the blokes is constantly talking about the girlfriend he met while on holiday on the other side of the river, and you can't meet her but her dad's the king and she kissed him with her tongue and felt his balls, and then her twenty-three sisters joined in and it was well horny

Saul

Me too. It was...yes, all over the place is right.

Hopefully you’ll see this comment before the next episode 🤞🏼 This episode has been shortened! I’m guessing wherever you’re watching from has edited them for some reason - the episodes are usually around 35 minutes long, and there are some bits missing missing from this, including the music performance they had each week. I wouldn’t say you’ve missed anything hilarious in this one, but future episodes might miss something good out! The full episodes are on The Internet Archive https://archive.org/details/the-young-ones-s-01-ep-04-bomb/The+Young+Ones+-+S01EP01+Demolition.MP4 😁 It was definitely a crazy show! Fun fact: they had a musical performance in each episode so that the BBC would class it as a variety show and therefore get a bigger budget 😄

Michaela

Josh, I’ve commented separately but I’ll put it here as well just incase - the full episodes can be found here https://archive.org/details/the-young-ones-s-01-ep-04-bomb/The+Young+Ones+-+S01EP01+Demolition.MP4 😊 Or as jeith

BelladonnicHazeyJaneII

Might be worth sending Josh the info in the private messages to make sure he sees it in time incase he misses it on here :)

Michaela

Ah I did wonder if there was an option to message people on here! Found it, will do it now (hopefully it’s not too late!)
