"... we're getting near the end of the season." Expecting answers because you run out of episodes is a mistake. You need to remember that the show DID NOT finish its first season. It was canceled early. Whedon's expectation, after the success of "Buffy" and "Angel" was a multi-season run with the normal-for-the time 20+ episodes per season, and so stories were going to be spread out. Regardless, they hadn't even finished writing the first season's episodes, much less film or air them, when the show was canceled. In the show's first run, they didn't even air all of the episodes they DID complete, because Fox pre-empted the show a few times and messed with scheduling. Thankfully, we have the movie "Serenity" to provide some closure.
