The full moon cast a silvery glow through the windowpanes of the Evergreen Retirement Home, illuminating the quiet hallways. The stillness was broken only by the faint squeaks of a wheelchair as it rolled through the corridors. Scotty, an old Malaysian man with a reputation for being aggressive and cantankerous, was pushed gently by Katie. She was a beautiful young nurse who everybody at the facility loved. She had a soft spot for him too, and despite his usual demeanor, Scotty found it difficult to be unkind to her. In fact, she was the only one who could handle him.

Katie's hair was tied in a loose bun, and her kind eyes sparkled with warmth and compassion. She was working the night shift alone, a task many of the other staff dreaded when it came to Scotty. But Katie never complained, and she always treated him with unwavering kindness.

As they reached Scotty's room, his eyes betrayed a hint of vulnerability. It was evident that he had something to say. Once inside, Scotty motioned towards the door, and Katie understood his silent request. She closed it behind them, creating a private space for them to share.

Scotty's gaze flicked towards a small, neatly wrapped package on his bedside table. Katie noticed it too, and her curiosity was piqued. She understood Scotty's unspoken request and picked up the small package, the weight of it heavy in her hands. She hesitated for a moment, knowing she wasn't allowed to accept gifts from residents. However, Scotty's insistent gaze convinced her to at least open it.

As she carefully peeled away the wrapping paper, her heart raced with curiosity. Scotty watched her intently, his usual scowl replaced by an expression of anticipation. Inside the wrapping paper was a small velvet box, and as Katie opened it, her eyes widened in surprise.

Nestled within the box was a delicate golden necklace, its pendant shimmering in the moonlight that filtered through the window. Katie glanced at Scotty, a mix of disbelief and gratitude reflected in her eyes. She knew she shouldn't accept the gift, but the thoughtfulness of the gesture touched her heart.

Understanding Scotty's intent, Katie slowly lifted the necklace from the box and clasped it around her neck. The golden chain rested gently against her skin, the pendant catching the light as she moved. As she looked at herself in the small mirror by the bedside, she couldn't help but appreciate the beauty of the gift. She undid her bun to see how she looked with her silky hair. “This is so beautiful…”

As she turned back to Scotty, she saw his face soften, the harsh lines of age and bitterness giving way to a genuine smile. It was a rare sight, one that few at the retirement home had ever witnessed. She put up her hair in a bun again, and the longer she stared, the darker his eyes became. She was about to say something before the necklace around her neck began to glow a bright red.
