Carolyn sat on her apartment balcony, her gaze fixed on the breathtaking hues of the setting sun, feeling blessed and relieved. Life was way better now that she had a permanent set of eyes, and with the attractive body she had now, she didn't have a shortage of people to flirt with and talk to. Of course, she didn’t let herself seem too outgoing – Josephine would have been too suspicious of her. She already made that mistake once, and she didn’t want to go through that drama again.

When she could act like herself right under the older sister’s nose, the body thief loved being in college. She loved enjoying herself, and as she basked in the tranquility of the moment, the soft sound of Josephine's voice floated from the kitchen. She was a fiercely protective woman who had tried to destroy everything Carolyn had worked hard for.

The body thief had originally been a ghost who was unable to move on into the afterlife. Deep down, she didn't want to, so when Josephine and her sister moved in, the ghost spotted an opportunity. And after Josephine destroyed Carolyn's special wooden statue, Eve's body became her own.

A mischievous smile played on Carolyn's lips as she listened to Josephine's animated chatter. Josephine had no idea that her actions had granted Carolyn the freedom she had yearned for since her tragic death from drunkenly falling off the very balcony she sat on. Upon dying, her soul accidently latched on to an item of extreme importance to her. The very object that had bound Carolyn's soul to the mortal plane was a wooden statue of a woman who represented her dead mother. She spent days on it back in high school, and she treasured it up to her death.

Eve had taken the cursed statue after finding it tucked away behind a dresser, unaware of its true nature upon moving into the new apartment. The apartment owner never locked up Carolyn’s things and simply reused her belongings for an unsuspecting tenant. The magical artifact had the power to force a soul to linger on Earth, unable to move on to the afterlife, and her mortal fingers were caressing its exterior.

But fate had a way of intervening. When Carolyn's presence became strong enough to slip into Eve, she switched places with the young woman. The young woman became trapped inside the statue, while Carolyn possessed her body. Of course, the ghost couldn't venture too far. She was still technically a ghost, so she regularly returned to the statue to recharge. But Eve hadn't been a ghost for very long, so she didn't understand how Carolyn slipped into her in the first place. The body thief did everything in her power to somehow destroy the statue, but some invisible force prevented her from doing so.

But as Josephine burned the statue, the old ghost knew that the invisible force didn’t prevent other people from destroying the magical object. She could almost hear Eve’s cries as the statue burned. Carolyn, free at last, screamed and pretended that Josephine had saved Eve.

The thought of actually having her new body forever made it easier to embrace her new sister, and while Josephine cried with sheer joy, Carolyn decided that she had to be careful about her personality changes now. She didn’t want to raise any suspicions that she was possessing Eve.

Thankfully, she could do anything now. No longer bound by the chains of the cursed artifact, she was now able to roam the mortal realm as she pleased without having to return to an old piece of wood. And as the older sister handed Carolyn a glass of wine to start the beginning of their long weekend, the body thief knew that her façade was going to be solid for the years to come.
