So it is worth noting the Merry's small size and Caravel class/model is very poorly suited for the fictional perils of the Grand Line; it is a luxury ship that logically went through too much in canon alone. It rode Reverse Mountain, got bumped and swallowed by Laboon, damaged by Luffy many times, barely missed monster typhoons and icebergs, partially eaten by Wapol, swallowed by a giant goldfish and busted out by giants, impaled by dozens of giant Marine metal stakes after Alabasta (after which it started falling apart by Jaya), blasted by Shojo's sonic attack, cut in half by Bellamy's springs, shot up the knock-up stream (that should have killed them!), burned by Shura and destroyed by Chopper, and finally fell from a considerable height after the octopus deflated, which I can confirm would be solely sufficient to significantly damage the strongest of ships. That fall is the straw that broke the camels back.
