Nah, he never knelt before because it would be like accepting the chairman's view on life, the whole "ends justify the means" thing. The chairman's always tried in the past to get saeroyi to kneel to accept his ideals on how life works, but as soon as he tried to force saeroyi to kneel because of something not related to his ideals, saeroyi knew the kneeling meant nothing, which was why he said it was easy, since kneeling to the prez there had nothing to do with giving up on his ideals since it was just a vain threat, just my take

Kneeling in itself isn't the problem for Saeroyi. In the past, he was told to kneel, beg forgiveness, and submit to the chairman's values above his own. In this situation, the chairman isn't even asking for anything. He's petty, and he's dying. In this moment we see how pathetic he has become, or always was. He's using Yi-seo's life to get a completely meaningless display out of Saeroyi to satisfy his ego and validate himself. In this situation, can we say anything was given away?
