The catalyst was never Takemitchi dying, He originally went back to the past because when naoto saved him from the train he pulled him away from the tracks. Their hands touched then, it just wasn't shown and left to the viewer to draw that conclusion.

Just catching up with these now that season 2 is starting! I know you want Takemichi to fight back, but he has zero fighting capability and is trying to fight against a member of a local biker gang who is twice his size. There’s only one way this ‘fight’ goes. It does work out for him in the end, but the more realistic result would have been that he went down in one punch, zero respect earned. Yes, you have to stand up to bullies but it’s easier said than done (especially when those anime schoolkids look like 30 year old men!)
