Huemon Nottabear

I think I figured it out. I think Aang is the avatar.

Khayta

Excited to hear their thoughts on this one

Taylor Lewis

I joined the Patreon for this and the OG avatar — worth it. (Also enjoy a lot of the other content as well!!)

NovaVortex

Ozai said "COOK THEN NIGGA!!" 🤣

Wrëck

The faces sheera was making during this episode lol

DraxTheFixer

Y’all need to react to shogun after me mrs smith it’s fire 🔥 it would be a great trip reaction

W Wang

Where's the new episode?

Angel

I'm excited to see their reaction to the changes in the show

Weston Johnson

Wow, they mixed in Jet and the Northern "Airbenders?" Interesting changes. Azula and her team are not what I expected. Lots of mixed feelings there.

Art of Trolling

Damn we already in the earth kingdom. They moving 😂

Wrëck

roshi confirmed on stream shogun will be next after some of the live tv shows are done

Champion Bescos

Despite my thoughts on this show, one thing remains true - watching it with you three elevates it quite a bit. Your optimism and enthusiasm is infectious, even during arguably the worst episode of the season. Takes this episode from a 4.5 to a 5.5 for me (and several later episodes do improve to quite decent so I’m sure you’ll make them feel ‘goodish’). Things I liked!: Jet’s casting, the design of Omashu, the little tongue in cheek references to the cartoon, cabbage merchant, the fight scene with Jet and the Freedom Fighters, the decent exploration of how Jet and the Mechanist are opposite sides of the same war-traumatized coin, Zuko and Iroh in general, Azula’s actress (surprisingly) and introducing Ozai and her earlier than the OG, Sokka for the most part, and the creative non-bending fight between Aang and Zuko. Some solid changes and compressions in this episode! But… Things I disliked: the continued lack of personality from Katara, a lot of the dialogue being CW levels of bad, continued lack of substantial presence from Appa and Momo, Zhao further being a discount Littlefinger, Mai and Ty Lee casting and lack of proper introduction, Aang still being underwhelming and uncharismatic, a lot of the cinematography within the Volume (especially compared to HotD and Mandalorian), Aang inconceivably not even TRYING to waterbend despite being eager to and being a quick learner at it in the OG, and Jet oddly being the one to teach Katara how to bend using love as a motivator. That and the overall frenetic pacing, without any downtown or feeling like time was going by. The passage of time is really nonexistent in this show, and that’s a shame because avatar is essentially a road journey, and time passing is a key element to that type of storytelling (ATLA, Lord of the Rings, Frieren, etc). Oh, and Bumi. 😕 I get what they were going for, I REALLY do, but it didn’t work. It might have, except they dropped the ball with his landing and, well… we’ll get to that next episode. That being said I can’t wait for next episode. Despite being unimpressed with the adaptation, there were a couple moments next episode that got me to feel some type of way. Props where props is due!

Maxxy

Cabbage man is the OG voice actor, he IS cabbage man now

JohnnySmoke

Im straight but this mf Jett sexy as hell ngl

Derek Warren

This is a fun show. It is not perfect but I’ve enjoyed it overall

User100

Mai Ling?? Lol it's Mai and Ty Lee

Saphthings

Once I watched this as like an alternate universe I enjoyed the heck out of it. Of course I miss some stuff, but at the end of the day I had fun. I cried. I laughed. So I hope they get more seasons.

Anonymous

"my ling" TY LEE???

Saphthings

Is Lupa wearing a Mickey shirt? lol

Saphthings

That's the original voice actor for the cabbage guy btw! : ) They got him there to act his infamous part! Haha

rickie woodson

not mai ling lol. goth girl is mai and the gymnist is ty lee

Ayanda Mpofu

Watching them jump off the cart made my stomach drop.

Champion Bescos

“Yeaaah. Put the turnip sack right over your head.” Had to to go back to that one; Lupa’s inner freak coming out 🤣😂

halinton williams

Fun fact book one is 8 hours long literally the same length as season 1 of the live action they could've kept some parts from the cartoon without skipping or changing still great that it's dark I like it

Saphthings

Numerically it sounds the same, but in reality it isn't. Animation and live action are different mediums and work differently. It's why a movie will be almost 2 hours long and show a story that's in 2 episodes of a 20 minute cartoon. It's what many superhero movies got wrong for so long until Marvel took their time with long arcs through dozens of movies. Like look at episode 8 of this series. Even if you remove all the extra scenes that'd be at most like 1 episode of extra stuff. So that's still 7 episodes left and yet when you finish this season you still feel a bit rushed and that's WITH them condensing so much. They'd need at least 12 to 15 episodes to show the same amount of content the cartoons showed. The real question is why don't they give shows 12-20 episodes anymore... but we also already know the reason. Budget and $.

sotonye ogan

Damn that spat btw Katara and sokka was cheesy asl lmao.

Davon Thomas

It's awesome that the only VA that got a part was the Cabbage merchant getting to be himself.

Dexter

ABED

Champion Bescos

You’re also ignoring the fact that they inserted a lot of their own ‘original’ content, and also used a lot of time repeating exposition over and over. That, plus the live action fights tend to take much longer with the complexity of filming and editing them than animation does. All of that eats up time, too. I still think they could have utilized their seven hours much more proficiently and had more impact if the writers had been more competant, but it is what it is.

James Stephenson

I just realized they've never seen community. Because the first thing I yelled when I watched the episode was hey. That's Abed. If they ever react to community, I'm going to lose my mind

Shiroja

So far my only issue is that Aang's character doesn't fully feel like Aang. He seems to preachy and not as goofy in the cartoon. Not sure if anyone feels the same. I am enjoying the show overall it just that one issue thatbugs me a bit.

Guns

“Fire nation SPY” Bro is in an all red hoodie 💀

Khayta

yes omg they should react to shogun I’ve been hearing so many great things hahaha

Aniki Pft

I think one of my biggest problems right now is probably Katara. She feels so docile and robotic, while I have issues with most of the characters she urks me the most. In the animated show Katara was kind-hearted, but rather aggressive and a tad bit impulsive. Those complexities complimented her character the most as she developed. That motherly feeling she gives the crew, especially Sokka mentioned isn't there. However it is the beginning so maybe they'll shine on Katara's actual character a bit.

billyon brown

aang was always preachy. hints why Katara got mad when he tried to be wise while he was trying to help her waterbend and she went off on him. Are the lines bar for bar? no, but if u watch the show its easy to notice that aang mentions the monks teachings often when giving advice. Alot of the characteristics displayed in the LA are from the cartoon they just expand on them differently. id say rewatch the cartoon, actually learn the characters, then come back.

billyon brown

fun fact the cabbage guy is the actual voice actor

Guns

They merged Bumi, air temple engineer and Jett arcs into all in one. So 3 in 1 episode literally.

Anthony Stark

I’ve scrolled through all the comments [up to this point at least] and I don’t see not one mention how crisp Lupa’s lineup is right now. I see you black man ✊🏾

WrathOfHeaven

Idk if y’all know who the actor for Zhao is, but if you remember Juntao from Rush hour or the porcupine man from X-men it’s the same guy, Ken Leung!

LiquidXGravity

They made the Azula trio so goofy looking to me lol 😆

LiquidXGravity

Yeah they definitely look goofy to me. When I first saw them I was like wtf 😆 🤣

em

see now that its live action, i dont get how zuko and iroh are able to hide in the earth kingdom. they the two most imperial east asian looking mfs in the middle of a sea of brown people.

em

i love that perspective on it, and i think that's the right way to frame it. i feel like people should give this the same grace that they gave the OPLA, which i also thoroughly enjoyed.

em

exactly, the disrespect. i remember the name of anyone who can paralyze me with three strikes.

em

i think they nailed it. whole thing was cleanly put together, and the characters felt like they were true to the original, just in a different place.

Toj

Im not buying this Baby face Azula and her goofy friends.. their costumes are phenomenal but the people rocking them ain’t it The one playing Ty Lee should’ve played Azula

Toj

Nah you’re right, Aang was actually charismatic! This one is trying their best .. just so stale.. not bad but just isn’t good enough as well

WrathOfHeaven

It looks like the archers that were with Azula in the archery range, are the same archers that Zhao sent after Aang while he was out searching for frozen frogs.

CAM

Ahh yes jet totally bombing omoshu citizens and attempting bumi assassination (literally makes no sense) and not trying to flood a fire nation village 🙃

Anonymous

Yeah I don’t mind the changes at all, people wanted an exact replica of every episode in live action form

Barnnlove

I think the live action really cornered themselves with showing Azula and her friends really early in the story. The thing about them, just like Zuko’ dad, is that we shouldn’t know so much about them. So they can have this menacing presence on the story and the avatar team. The live action is making Azula like she’s insecure about Zuko “shining” more than her. When we know that this isn’t the case, Ozai and Azula knows that she’s superior than Zuko. Is not until later on in the story that we find out that Azula has her flaws and secrets that drifts her to a mental breakdown. Even though they go in depth on her later on in the cartoon and comics. I think is a bad decision making Azula a character that the audience can have sympathy about her story when she supposed to be this menacing and “unstoppable” character.

Jeremiah Neely

I still can't believe that Zhao's actor is Sang from the first Rush Hour movie. lol "Wipe yourself off man. You're bleeding."

Tug

been rewatching the animated version with the squad while waiting for these. the live action been pretty solid

Champion Bescos

Agreed. While Zhao is arguably the most changed from his OG self, what they’ve done to Katara feels far more egregious. She was such a full bodied character, full of complexities like you said. Here, she’s practically a paper bag. Docile, soft spoken, reactive as opposed to proactive, young sisterly instead of motherly, etc. Perhaps the writers felt she needed a more dramatic arc and are planning to make her grow more fierce and proactive and motherly as the show goes on, but I think that’s yet another poor creative decision.

Champion Bescos

Nailed it. They even do this to a lesser extent with Iroh and Zuko’s more touching relationship aspects. The writers seem like they’re in such a hurry to get to “the good stuff” that they’re introducing characters, concepts, and lore that either hasn’t been earned or isn’t appropriate yet. The menacing aura behind Azula is completely gone, and when we do see her eventually go toe to toe with the gAang, I feel like we’re now subtly conditioned to sympathize with this girl who’s really just being manipulated and used by her father (who may favor Zuko moreso than her??). The mystery behind all the antagonists is gone, and that’s something the cartoon handled so brilliantly. Other than Zhao, who we largely see through Zuko and Iroh’s eyes, we never get insight into the villains because the squad hasn’t encountered them yet. We’re going through everything alongside them, and the villains are as foreign and scary a concept to them as it is us.

Nicka Snax

Katara is definitely the weakest actor out of all of them... she acts like she's been drugged, just like half-awake and sleepwalking through all her scenes. She barely looks phased when emotional moments happen. Where's her energy, her fire, her attitude? She's like 20% of what the show's Katara is.

Jay M

Mai Ling and her friend deserves better. Hope they get more screentime and lines in future seasons

Azzy V

ABEDDDDDD

Fazzywazzy

Its not exclusively brown people in the earth nation. Even in the market you can see a variety of ppl with different asian skin tones

Persto

I may not have completely understood it, but, to me it didn't make sense that Aang starts off the episode talking about Omashu's delivery system, but then the Mechanist's son saying it was his father that came up with it? Timeline-wise, wth?

GK

A Count Olaf reference,,,,,in a Roshi reaction!?! GOATED

Da’Jour Thompson

Juntao was the old white guy. The guy who’s playing Zhao was Sang, the blonde dude that said, “Wipe yourself off, you’re bleeding.”

Aniki Pft

It's just unfortunate because She's my favorite character. The way she interacts with the cast in the animated show is amazingly well written, but I try not to be so critical of Live Action things.

WrathOfHeaven

Just looked it up, guess we were both wrong lol. The old white guy is Thomas and Ken Leung played “Sang.” But Ken also played in one of the Saw movies as a detective or something like that, I only know this one bc I remember vividly one of his scenes 💀

beni-chan

just an FYI the cabbage man is THE ORIGINAL VOICE ACTOR from the animated show! James Sie!!!

Arc

Mai kinda fat ngl

Anonymous

Atla fans don't fatshame literal kids challange: impossible

Ohais

Bro, the way Zuko said no to Zhao. "NOooo..." it sounded so whiney lmao

Champion Bescos

Looking at the cast, the Earth Kingdom seems largely Indian, Sri Lanken, Chinese, and various SEA. Lots of variety for Fire Nation folks to slip in amongst.

Ohais

Why are there so many slow motion shots in this show? I feel like it really cuts the momentum of the scene every time they do it

RnicJaay

Ozai is Johnny Gat holy shit

Gladeez

Jet and I can go at it until the air benders come back to life

Xander

Sad they made bumi an a-hole

Anonymous

The budussy juice is wild Lupa 😂😂

Phroug

So far this is the first episode that I straight up did not enjoy, idk if it was the merging 3 whole different storylines or just the fact that I never enjoyed Jet in the original show either, but this episode really killed the momentum for me

em

point taken. forgot lore-wise that earth kingdom recieved refugees from other nations during the war

Elle E.

Loved this episode! Nice reaction.

My Big Little Brother

I hate betrayal in any show, so I was kind of prepared. I know my own bias a bit, so I already knew I wasn't going to like this. I didn't like it in the original either lol

FjordPhd

Man got pinned to a tree and just gave up so hard he stopped existing.

Storm Blade

depends on how fat buddy. 600 ibs yes it's unhealthy. 250 ibs is nothing to be ashamed of but you have some room for improvement. i bet you're the same kind of guy that thinks Zoro from One Piece is how every man is supposed to look 💀

Ghost

Chomping on raw cabbages like chips os crazyyyy sheera💀💀💀💀

Sham3ful

5 minutes in & I still this can't be PG cause the amount of niggas getting burned alive after seeing "Order 66" is crazy lmaoo

Kamko

The merging of different stories isn't that big of a deal to me but it's how every change they've been making feels unmotivated, especially later on. It feels like they missed to theme to each story and only remade them based on their base concept without at least reimagining a different fitting theme.

Barry

Agree I really did enjoy the first two episodes but this lost me.

Smash Bran'Discootch

No, but I'm not a gross fat bastard and I don't have any issue staying in shape. If I can do it, so can everyone else. Fat people are disgusting. And yes, 250lbs is fucking obese. Put down the McDonald's and do some damn situps, fatty.

Johnwick

Jus noticed zhao actor is the main villain for rush hour 1 😭

Cls

Need y’all to watch community cause how did u not notice ABED!

Anonymous

I’m pretty sure the fire nation village that he was trying to flood had earth kingdom citizens. It was an earth kingdom village that was also the base of fire nation soldiers. So in the cartoon, he did try to kill innocent people for the “greater good” of getting rid of the fire nation soldiers that also patrolled the village.

Jaelyn Mcgee

The kid playing aang has his energy but his delivery is just so off

Baron Salt

They really made Zuko boot licker

Baron Salt

Azula just isn't as intimidating. She just isn't carrying herself like a deadly warrior and she's far too soft spoken.

DsWorldd •

I’d say that and the actor for her appears younger and has a more “innocent” face than a slick type of face. Looks more adorable than intimidating lmao

TheDroppedFry

As uncouth as Smash's replies are, his point is still valid. You will never catch me supporting literal physical illness of the body. And this show has missed the mark on so many other areas that Mai being somewhat chubby is just whatever.

TheDroppedFry

Shogun is fucking GOATed, best portrayal of Edo Era Japan I have ever seen in cinema. It feels like I'm watching Total War Shogun 2 the live action version lmao

Bria A.

I get it but at the same time…Azula’s fourteen. Say what you want about art style, but part of the tragedy is that she SHOULDN’T be so fucked up so young. I definitely don’t care much for the “descent into madness” thing they’re trying to do by making her a lot more sympathetic to start (though I can appreciate the effort), but the casting isn’t terrible.

Bria A.

Eh, I liked it. And live-action Jet is a lot more charming than his cartoon counterpart who was basically 80% an asshole lol. I actually don’t mind the composite plots and I think this episode’s attempt was pretty successful, but I agree with the writers missing the spirit of some other plotlines they just kinda shoehorned in.

Markus Bryant

I should've came to say this earlier, but I truly view this series as an alternate universe. ATLA Universe 2. There some key differences that have it vary from the original story, but they still make a lot of sense. I think this is the realistic universe. It really captures the hardships and attitudes of people that have been at war for the last 100 years. That's a long time. WW2 was 7 years and that was our best reference. Imagine WW2 for 100 years. People lived out their entire lifetimes in a war that was kicked off with the erasure of an entire culture. In ATLA Universe 1, people were really happy and optimistic about it, which is kind of unrealistic. In universe 2, I appreciate the realism
