the ladies in waiting for lishu didnt realize that she had an allergy to fish, they thought she was being childish and picky so they gave her the fish to bully her just like they gave her the dress they're playing off her childishness/ignorance(?) to make her look worse than she already does, poor girl shes just a kid :((, this accidentally saved her life tho so cant be too mad ig

Allergy wasn't even a thing back in that period, that's why the subtitle worded "Food you cannot eat" So in most people eyes the young Concubine was just a spoiled picky eating brat, so the lady in waiting was trying to bully her by forcing her to eat food she doesn't like not knowing that she's allergic to fish.

Yeah I just did a cursory googling, and apparently understanding of allergies didn't really start to develop until around the 19th century, and this show takes place during the Ming Dynasty, which was the 1300s to the 1600s. So yeah, even the scientific community of the time would have had no concept of allergies.

Lishu wasn't supposed to get fish. She was supposed to get jellyfish, but because the taster swapped it the jellyfish went to gyokuyou. And the fish went to the Lishu instead so originally speaking she wasnt going to get something she was allergic to

It was quick but at the beginning of episode 6, the ladies-in-waiting to Lishu seemed to think that Lishu was just picky. Not allergic.

I caught up on all of these episodes and this is SUCH a good show. To answer some end of episode commentary — nobody knew Lishu was allergic. Allergy knowledge isn’t common in this (fantasy) time period, which is why they never give it a term and only describe symptoms. They just thought she was a bratty child and a picky eater. Also, it wasn’t Gyokuyou’s (hope I spelled that right) silhouette, it was Lishu’s food taster. I don’t know anything about this show at all but my theory is Jinshi might be the Emperor’s “sick” younger brother? Guess we’ll see.

The only thing that lady-in-waiting knew was that Lishu doesn't like eating mackerel. People who weren't in a medical field often weren't aware that allergies are a thing. So she swapped Lishu's dish with Gyokuyou's dish to bully Lishu. She thought it would just be uncomfortable, and wasn't aware that it could hurt her. Since Gyokuyou doesn't really dislike any foods she wouldn't raise an issue with getting a slightly wrong dish, and Lishu is too young, naive, and powerless to do anything about it. Especially when you consider how few people would actually know about allergies, speaking up about a common fish being "dangerous" to her specifically would just look like a little girl being picky.

I mean even if the concept of allergies wasn't widely spread, surely some giga brain ppl should have put 1+1 together when they are a medical "professional" (by the day's standards, hence the quotes cuz of dubious professionality by modern metrics) and after eating X they almost fucking died from the bad feel etc

I got the dragon pin part but honestly I wasn’t paying attention to where he was headed. My only conflicting thought with that is that one of Maomao’s co-ladies in waiting was like, “I swore he was here earlier” but they…already know what Jinshi looks like? And nothing except the pin is different.

Lishi's lady-in-waiting did in fact NOT know that she was allergic to mackerel. She merely thought that Lishi did not like fish. Seeing as MaoMao had to explain the concept of allergies to these high-ranking "educated" people, it's pretty safe to assume that the lady-in-waiting didn't poison Lishi on purpose, but merely bullied her on purpose.

Sure individual people figured it out Skebaba. But before the scientific method come out there's no easy way to prove it, so you couldn't convince others. You see this a lot throughout history, like the guy who figured out that hand washing before surgery would save a ton of lives was dismissed as a crank.

That is how it seems, especially in the scene early on. Based on how they talk and how Maomao explains things, the concept of allergies isn't really a thing at this time either.

I think Jinshi is the Emperor's brother. He's a special person who is hiding his real status, his servant is a higher ranking official who has been looking after him since birth, he's basically undercover testing out who is loyal to the Emperor among the concubines which means he has the Emperor's trust, it's rumored the brother is too sick to leave his house so most people probably don't know what the brother looks like, and it looked like he was about to enter the area where the seat for the Emperor's younger brother was.

The beginning of last episode literally started with the little girl's attendants saying "she is so picky about food, so many likes and dislikes, it is not like eating it will kill her." So they literally don't know allergies can be lethal, until Maomao went off on the little girl's food taster last episode. Also the Dad saying "The rear palace? What a twist of fate" makes me think her Mom was from the Rear Palace too and the Dad probably got her out with the hairpin-giving custom that Maomao just used to visit her home this episode. Also I do like how wholesome this is, with dark undertones to keep it interesting.

Also the current emperor hadn’t touched Lady Lishu because he doesn’t swing like his creepy dad. The LN states the likes his women well endowed (especially in the front) so Lishu is also just not his type as well. She’s his concubine in name only

At this point Maomao trying to join CSI:Miami. This episode gave off heavy demon slayer season 2 vibes with the pleasure district. My man lihaku folded like an omelet when he heard them three goddesses names pairan for sure bout to go crazy😂. Also Pokémon parent is so correct her dad might as well be Goku or Ging the way he was so nonchalant. I definitely believe jinshi is royalty he's most likely the emperor's half brother or something who knows how many concubines his father had. Oh this has nothing to do with anything but Maomao's bed was Hella big makes me wonder how big Gyokiyou's is🤔.
