This series is actually a LN and I believe it is much further ahead than the manga. You could give that a try if you can't find copies. I know novels are a lot harder to get into for a lot of people though.

Show LITERALLY shows you how he figured it out, hearing MaoMao muttering about something to write with. Roshi, with visible confusion: How did he figure it out? *facepalms* Dude really not paying attention, or just using his brain cells properly. Smh. I'm actually baffled at how a seemingly normal human being with two eyes and a brain could not get that from what the anime literally showed you clear as day. It's like watching someone cross the street and asking how they crossed the street.

This show is overall good. Good bit of fun, lovable characters, story is very simple to digest. The central point is all about Mao Mao and thank God She's a very lovable character.
