I think it's a principle thing. Magic in that world is partially religious, so just having the eye is kind of like being marked as a demon or something; even if its removed, the child is still "tainted"

Abyss' powers is literally medusa from soul eater complete with the arrows and movement and all. In my opinion Abyss would have made for a better main villain than Abel. After what his parents did to him it would have made more sense for him to hate magic and start a cult that hated magic with their main goal being to eradicate the entire world of magic.

My theory is that people are not just born without a mark and the magic and mark are taken from them as babys if there magic is powerfull, just like he said they will take the girls mark and magic maybe thats what happens to babys with out a mark they get their magic removed
