Hope you guys check out the OVA of this season as well, I'd think it takes place right about before the last episode, but to be honest, this theory is based on the amount of stickers on the sign above the classroom door :D

I always took Hayato answer as many his parent´s were like yukinon an have decide on his future so he "has no choice" but that´s me theorizing, and more than end credits I think of them as little details that complement the episodes so you can see how the characters respond or something like that.

oh shit Roshi. That take at the end (22:49) is great. I like that interpretation better than any I've heard so far.

SnailSpray

is Dr. Stone coming today?

what hayama meant that just like yukinon he also has to follow a specific path in college to eventually inherit the family business.

Devin B

Some of these situations (especially this one) these kids just got to learn to take the L cause they keep getting other people involved in their mess.

Lukas

Yukino isn't in line to inherit the family business. Haruno is.

My interpretation of what Hayama said at the end is that he basically wants to have it all in the sense of being able to pick the field he wants to be in even if it doesn't match the ones his friends are in while still maintaining the relationship he has with his friends. Unfortunately he doesn't see the choice of picking his field of study as his choice at all probably due to the kind of business his family is in which requires him to pick a certain field.

love you guys for reacting to this :)

This episode I think further supports my theory that Hayama likes Yuki, but it is unreciprocated, and he is OK with that somewhat. He’s not going to try to actively change Yuki‘s mind, but he still hates the fact that he’s losing a Hikki but is too nice of a guy to do something serious about it. I think him choosing liberal arts was him trying to spite his love, rival Hikki and maybe to also be in the same school/program as Yuki.

it wasnt until my 3rd watch of this series did i come to appreciate the character Hayama Hayato. Hes definitely one of the most complex if not the most complex character on the show. Probably because his intentions and actions thus far have always been cryptic and mysterious. Its like at face value in s1 he was this good looking dude whos nice to everyone but we assumed he has some bad shit behind that mask. Which turns out to be half true. Because his whole character's dilemma is the fact that he is always living to fulfil the expectations of others. Something hes grown tired of doing. "Hayama is the best at sports, Hayama is perfect" all these ideas of him has begun to crush him til he suffocates. And yeah, hes probably the most mature out of the high school group. He understood perfectly what Miura wanted but believed that by lettin her know what his path was, she would forsake her own choice to follow his. the more i watch this show again, hes just a great character. We thought he was a foil to Hikigaya but he turned out to be much more complicated than a "love rival". He probably has/had feelings for Yukino but that was never the focal point behind his character.

the channel "replay value" has a pretty good video explaining the subtext of that scene with Hayama. However, they also have a different video about something that happens later and the title might be a spoiler so do be careful if you want to check it out.
