I feel like this amalgamation of themes and plot points is SUPER interesting, and my favorite part of the series (truly), but is throwing a lot of viewers off 😆 I'm strapped in for the long haul since the Manga looks to be going strong still.

LionBro

Have you watched RWBY?

Lash

Btw just in case you guys forgot we've already seen Mikura in episode 2 or 3 when Maru asked Hiruko if she learned anything from her. Thats when we find out that Mikura gave Hiruko the laser gun, and that Mikura was sick with seemingly the same disease that Tarao had

ogking31

I would say pretty mid episode but that's okay. Things are building up

Merfhew

Vinland usually comes out on Tuesdays. As we haven't seen a new schedule posted, I'd assume nothing changed.

Tokio uses the wording "boku" which is generally used by guys too. It's meant to be unclear what her gender is.

2023-05-02 01:57:48 For those interested in keeping up with the manga, Episode 5 adapted the remaining parts of chapters 12 (its last 5 pages) and 13 (its first 16 pages), and then all of chapters 14 and 15 were basically completely adapted (which is equivalent to about ~2.68 chapters worth of manga adapted for this episode). With the remaining 8 episodes of the season adapting anywhere between 19-22 chapters of manga, the pacing of those episodes will on average range from 2⅜-2¾ chapters adapted per episode. And the series has been deliberately presenting Tokio's gender/sex as ambiguous/vague (and definitely intended for the audience to initially assume that Tokio is a boy). This is one of those things where the intentional ambiguity it is more obvious in Japanese, as Tokio (and many of the facility kids in general) refer to themselves with the Japanese first-person pronoun "boku", which is a typical masculine pronoun that boys and young men largely use. And Tokio is addressed as "Tokio-kun", the "kun" honorific in Japanese, while not used exclusively for males, is viewed as a more masculine honorific than "san" and "chan". Because the manga didn't have voice acting, it was easier for the story to initially lead the audience in assuming Tokio was a boy for a couple of volumes, but the anime has a bigger challenge in doing that due to the voice acting being present. So Roshi and co. thinking Tokio was a boy at this point in the story is actually how the story was originally supposed to be experienced for audiences when the manga was first coming out. So the beginning of this episode kept a fun easter egg (that was also present in the original manga) to one of Masakazu Ishiguro’s (the mangaka of Heavenly Delusion) other older works, specifically the single-volume manga called “Nemurubaka”. The easter egg itself was the CD Kiruko was trying to test (and sell), as it was an album from the fictional band “Peat Moth”. Members of said fictional band are actually some of the main characters of Ishiguro’s “Nemurubaka” manga. So it was neat to see that they kept that reference in the anime. If people didn’t understand from this episode, the reason why Kiruko had such an agitated reaction to Maru potentially disappearing is because Kiruko essentially has a fear of abandonment/being left alone, which likely developed due to the events and trauma surrounding Kiruko’s backstory (as depicted in episode 3). Watchers with an eye (and ear) for detail may notice that the “t17” that made up part of the dates shown in the video camera footage from previous episodes is revealed to stand for the calendar year dating system “Ten’ei”, with the current year at the facility being Ten’ei 17 (and Tarao having died on October 16th). This is likely similar to to the imperial dating system that Japan uses (the current real life imperial era being Reiwa, and the previous one having been Heisei). In fact in Japanese history there was a brief Imperial Era that was called Ten’ei (天永), and was when Emperor Toba ruled, his reign lasting from July 1110 through July 1113. The kanji making up said Imperial era meant (for 永) “eternity, long, lengthy” and (for 天) “heavens, sky, imperial”. However in the anime, the facility is apparently using slightly different kanji, with it being "天栄" instead of "天永". And "天栄" can apparently be translated as something like “Heavenly Glory", as the kanji “栄” can translate to mean like “flourish, prosperity, honor, glory, splendor”. Also the object that was left behind in Tarao’s ashes (after his body was cremated) appears similar to the things that Maru apparently crushes (inside of Man-Eaters) when he uses his “Maru-Touch” powers to kill Man-Eaters. And if anyone needs a refresher on the facility kids’ ages, the approximate ages of Tokio, Shiro (the white-silver haired teen who was sent the nude photo), Mimihime (the subject of said photo), Taka (the super strong/durable kid), and Anzu (the black haired girl often seen with Taka) are all 14 years old. The approximate ages of Nanaki & Iwa (the two kissing girls), Kuku (the frog-like girl) and Tarao (the sick and now dead kid) are all 10 years old. And Kona’s (the kid who draws the strange drawings) approximate age is 17 years old. And if anyone is interested in starting the manga after this season is finished (it is currently planned to adapt up to some part of tankōbon Volume 6 of the manga), I personally would still recommend starting the manga from the beginning regardless, as in addition to the standard cutting of extra dialogue and scenes from the anime for run-time and cinematic pacing, the chapter titles and cover pages of the manga also play a role in experiencing the foreshadowing of the story that the anime can’t quite replicate (due to the inherent difference in mediums). The mangaka of Heavenly Delusion, Masakazu Ishiguro (who is active on Twitter), their most well known previous work is “And Yet the Town Moves” (also known as Soremachi), which was serialized from 2005-2016. They have also done a number of other single volume manga and short stories collections. Ishiguro's has also stated that the major influences for the Heavenly Delusion series, include the works Akira, Armored Trooper Votoms, and an old Japanese science-fiction novel titled "Dogra Magra" that was written Kyūsaku Yumeno (who appears as a character in Bungo Stray Dogs) and published in 1935.

Kyouki

I don’t know if the dates of death of the children could be a hint? If Ten’ei is the year of death, that means the facility is in the year 17? Maybe 17 years after the Great Disaster? Then that would mean the facility is two years in the future and Haruki/Maru are the present/past since Maru is probably 15 and he said this episode that he was born the year of the Great Disaster… But then that would mean that Maru and Tokio have a serious age gap and the facility has been in action for a long time, since Maru was probably from there before he has memories as a baby? So much to think about!!

Jazko

respectfully you need to chill out man. Yeah we get that you are a big fan. But you don't need to explain every episode. Let us as the audience formulate opinions and theories and enjoy the show raw. You remind me of the people that explain every easter egg in MCU and DC movies, like bruh everything gon be explained or left for the viewer to interpret.

VictorBR45

Where did you get that exact video? I went on Nyaa, some other streaming sites, and I couldn't find it..,

Daniel Robb

I hate manga readers sometimes. The show was probably going to explain the robot lady doing things behind the scenes, but instead we get to learn about it from commenters literally giving us chapter by chapter answers. They ruin the mystique of the show imo. For example the whole "didnt know they were a girl but probably not supposed to know" like, can the commenters not just enjoy without all the hints??

Cameron Robinson

I got that the robot lady was in on it from the show only. She literally set off an alarm in her room right before Tokio was gonna get caught and when asked about it her answer was basically shit happens. Then with the weird tech shit going with cameras, the secret message and the picture, it lead to the theory that robot lady was fucking with stuff.

Merfhew

Why is it such a big deal for someone to leave a long comment? Perhaps you can't / won't read, like Elijah, or maybe you want to form your own theories, like Jazko, and that's completely fine. However, I fail to see why someone leaving a long comment would impact people so deeply that they feel the urge to mock or complain about it every single week. No one is forcing you to read his comment.

Cameron Robinson

Definitely middest so far but hopefully something juicy drops or a good action sequence next episode.

NecDW4

Was that fucking Dragon Quest 3... as an arcade cab? LOL

Merfhew

@Daniel - Unfortunately, reading the comments is always a risk. If I had more self control, I'd avoid the Patreon and YouTube comment sections entirely.

Orlandez Malone

That man was carrying around a bottle of diarrhea 😭

Andres Holguin

It's dangerous because they're in Chicago 😂😂. This why I love yalls reactions

Theo Vorster

Thank you for the kind defense. Also, something I just want to make clear. While I am manga-reader, when I write my comments I make sure to only comment on trivia and stuff that can be discerned from the anime itself so far (or is trivia not directly related to the plot, such as the meaning of some Japanese words or easter eggs/references to other works), I do not give any future spoiler information in my comments. For example, I made sure to never mention Tokio’s gender in my previous comments, and I was actually a little disappointed that other commenters actually ended up spoiling Roshi and co. about that last week, since the audience assuming Tokio was a boy was the intention of the show (as a misdirect) at that point in the story still.

Jake Thompson

I'm starting to think Heaven is taking place in the past, since active robotics were a thing before the Collapse (even if they weren't responsible for the Calamity like the theory from the newspaper) and we haven't seen any during Maru's journey but they are all over Heaven.

Mary L.

no one: lupa: ...ew

Drake Rage

mm interesting, so he said Mikura taught him how to kill those monsters, so they both have powers like the kids in the facility, and Mikura died from an illness that looked exactly like the one the kid at the facility had, that was dying last episode.

Xaiver Craig

Day 2: Humbly Requesting a Trio movie reaction for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

SamSam

I don't think we were supposed to know Tokio's gender yet in the anime either. I noticed last episode that when they wanted her to visit that the boy who was sick, on the announcement to her room, they called her "Tokio-kun". I believe -kun is mainly used for boys no? So I think we were also supposed to assume she was a boy in the anime until they reveal that she's a girl

Osiss

It can be used for both girls and boys, teachers often call girls -kun

Mervyn Larrier

I didn't read the manga, but I can see that, generally, the facility de-emphasizes gender, probably in order to control some of the variables of whatever experiment they're running. So the clothes are androgynous on purpose. They seem to not want to influence how the kids develop TOO much.

SamSam

Oh really?? I didn't know that, thanks! I'm gonna keep an ear out when watching other Japanese media

Merfhew

I hadn't yet watched their reaction when I commented before. Now that I have, I'm upset, too. I'm hoping this robot lady turns out to be a red herring. If not, it means people literally decided to spoil Roshi, who may have accidentally spoiled it for the rest of us. Why join a Patreon for blind reactions if you're gonna spoil things for the reactor?

Merfhew

Yeah, it's unfortunate that so many people felt the need to point out Tokio's gender last week when it was clearly meant to be ambiguous. While I did have my suspicions, I was hoping to wait until the anime made things clear.

Also keep an ear out for whenever a character says I or I am cause girls use watashi which is the formal way of saying I am but boys would use boku or ore which is generally used by them. You will rarely hear a girl refer to herself using boku or ore.

NP. Also if you listen closely to how Kiruko talks he uses boku to address himself so that should've been an indicator that he wasn't a she.

These Plums

Boy got cremated and Roshi said "He fell apart." I'm dead lmao

These Plums

Also the translation might have been bad, but they aren't immortal. The doctor was pointing out the fact that Tarao was born/modified with immunity to all diseases but still got sick. So, if he got sick then the kids are at risk.

Kisuke01

This facility is some COTE White Room shit feelsbadman

Prime

I send it to roshi every week, what’s up?

Jigga Man

the facility has to be in the present, the old lady made reference to the monsters outside the facility in some earlier episode when the girl asked if there's anything outside the outside

Panda

Im thinking what if those things weren't the man eaters, but the kids are. Since all that takes place before hand, what if what fucked up the world was the kids turning into man eaters.

earthphoenix7068

Tokio always says Boku, so I just thought she was doing an Astolfo thing.

Bautista

Or it could even be that the kids are somehow raised with powers, then they have the babies become clones of them, that would explain the whole same face thing. Maybe becoming man eaters is a side effect

Brobi-Wan Kenobi

Ignore the haters man. If they don't like it they can keep scrolling. Personally I enjoy your comments. I always love seeing people be passionate about the things they like.

Kevin

Maybe whoever Tarao's clone is has some sort of immunity to the disease. Or like whenever Tarao finds the person with his face they'll be able to undo whatever led to that Day of Fate. Definitely agree that this facility exists in the past. Now the question is what exactly led to all the kids getting free? My last kinda theory is that since all of these new man-eaters look like the kids drawings. Maybe that kid grew up to be the doctor and he's the one creating all these monsters.

Brobi-Wan Kenobi

I think the facility is in the past too. And I'm guessing the "Day Of Fate" is the day the Great Disaster happened.

Mervyn Larrier

yeah idk where Roshi got that. I thought it was pretty obvious that the facility is supposed to be like, the last remnants of high-tech civilization

Jigga Man

I thought so too, but they did a direct cut back to a monster after that scene. Could be a metaphor but I've got a hunch it's not.

Emman Reed

Roshi's so adamant about his theory, I’m excited to see how this story unfolds and if Roshi will suffer from a メガクラプ

Mari

Yeah that’s what I was thinking as well, I don’t know where they got this two different timeline stuff from, I was hella confused when they started saying that because I thought it was clear that wherever the kids are, is one of the last places where high tech technology is working and that there in the same timeline because the old lady has said "that there are monsters outside". And that's probably the place maru and kiruko are looking for(Heaven) is probably the place where the kids are

My nigga Zoro got lost again, he has once again wondered into the set of an entirely differentass anime

Skebaba

@Cameron Robinson Yeah only RETARDS would not think of the old proverb of "when in doubt, AI is at fault", when anything tech related goes fucky wucky, ALWAYS blame the AI for the sussiness, because AIs of that sophistication level can literally use 1 finger to fuck w/ CCTV feeds & any other type of digital & mechanical shit, simple as

Skebaba

@Devin B only if she hadn't been designed as a tomboy type character like that. Since she was, "boku" is a given as per anime troping

Also Mimihime in E1 said that she saw 2 ppl coming to rescue them (when talking to Tokio), and one of the 2 looked exactly the same face as Tokio has. I assume the place is gonna crash to shit, since when that 1 clownworld dude tried to go up that huge pillar on those drones, he fell down, and Mimihime said that she felt like "something else will come crashing down", which I assume would logically mean someone starts to fuck up the Heaven facility, collapsing the roof or w/e (maybe Maru & Kiruko, since we know they are looking for the place, + Maru looks facially the same as Tokio does)

@Skebaba that's true too. I just think after knowing the truth it's something I noticed but yeah there are some tomboys that would use boku or Ore to address themselves.

Devin B

Idk cause Tokio was freaking out about kissing so I doubt that she would try something more intimate than that, and this is just my assumption but I took what the old lady said about Asura's mind not being right for their body as being transgendered. That was my first impression but I can be completely wrong about that. Either way like you said this is very close to Darling in the Franxx in the sense that these kids are basically dealing with puberty without any guidance.

Please ignore some of the hate. I for one enjoy your long explanations. As you said, there aren't any spoilers in them. I'm pretty sure the point of the community in the comments is to engage in a discussion and to share different interpretations. As long as you're not spoiling anyone, it's great. People have the ability to discern and have the ability to scroll past if they don't like. Let's not act like children. Jeez.

Yehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Haaa?

I had to go read the manga cause I just felt too damn restless. Now I can say that the manga is not that much closer to endgame but questions have been answered atleast lol

Haaa?

@Devin B idk because it seems some time has past since her seeing them kiss and she looked curious after the fact, its not a stretch and her being pregnant was the first thing that came to my mind too. I think asura was just too smart, like they are trying to make super kids but asura surpassed what anyone thought and she felt too limited.

It is apparently at least past the halfway point. This was stated by the mangaka Masakazu Ishiguro last August 2022, right before tankōbon volume 8 was released. So with volume 9 being 5/6ths of the way done, if Ishiguro’s estimation holds true, we should have about 7 more tankōbon manga volumes worth of the story remaining.

Reckless Company

Im fighting... I honestly trying figure it out but after this episode im might cave and read the manga

Haaa?

if you want some answers i say go read it. not all the questions have been answered but some big ones have. But if you want the conclusion i say wait because new chapters come out once or twice a month.

MethodTKT

for me the animators went beyond for the eyelashes. Those are the most dead giveaways for me.

Mikaylin

The Chicago disrespect has got to stopppppp😭😭😭

The series is a monthly release, with a new chapter released around the 24th-25th of each month (and the mangaka usually takes a month or two off every year, so we get about 10 chapters annually).

I will say for Tokio's gender, as far as I know they've never given a solid confirmation! In both the manga and the show so far, they never refer to Tokio with pronouns, they only say "Tokio". I won't spoil things for later but gender/sex is a funky thing in this story ( it seems to be a running theme in the story, actually).

This show is giving Summertime Rendering vibes. Got no idea what’s going on, theories are formed every ep, and the animation has been tasty as hell.

I wanted to comment on the lyrics, especially the second line of the opening. The first two lines ("mou ii kai" and "mou ii yo") are the things you say in a hide and seek game. "Mou ii kai" is when the seeker asks if the hiders are ready / or if the seeker is good to go. Then the hiders can give two answers: Mada da yo = not yet Mou ii yo = good to go / ready / all set For that video, it looks like the second line of the opening is wrong.

Also remember that in the first episodes, Tokio was curious about the outside and the director was honest saying the world outside is full of MONSTERS.

Prime

Thanks for the insight! Will change it for next week. The lyrics and styling were taken from [Dae]’s release on nyaa. Feel free to download one of the episodes and let me know if there’s any other lyrics that might need changing.

VictorBR45

I downloaded it and everything else looks great. No idea why the second line came out like that. As for the ending, it's okay, but the lines "why do you keep worrying? That cry of yours echoes loudly". The thing that is worried about is "that cry echoing". So the full sentence would be "why keep worrying about that echoing cry?", if translated literally. "Under a brilliant morning sky" is okay, but the literal translation is "shining scarlet light". It could be a morning sky, but couldn't it also be dusk? I don't know, honestly. Not sure if I'd call dusk something brilliant or shining, so "morning" is probably ok, idk. The ED has an official translation on ASOBI Doumei's channel btw. I'm not qualified at all to be making accurate translations and correcting other people's work, so I'd say it's a good idea to check the official translation.

@Devin B i took the mind not being right for the body as just being too smart. IT seems like a lot of the kids have special gifts and so she could've been too smart or have foresight and couldn't handle whatever the facility was planning. I do like your theory too though.

I can only assume that shit doesn’t come up on X-rays cause how tf did they not know that was inside him

Nabi

what's up with the robot lady? as a manga reader, i still don't know what's her deal

Gilthwixt

I haven't watched the next episode yet but they literally say "The Day of Fate" hasn't happened yet and it's heavily implied to be the disaster that caused the collapse. Even if that ends up being wrong it's not hard to see why Roshi and the rest of us would question the timeline.

VictorBR45

It's VERY rough. The (?) sign indicates a part I'm way more unsure. Another thing I'm unsure of is the pronouns. To reference the subject correctly requires way more than a 1 year and a half of study. Why, why, a falling away celestial realm Why, how much, have your looks faded Hey, you're a real idiot Don't think of why's It won't come true now, right? A left behind scenario of love Hey, something like going together I've never thought of it as a bother It won't come true now, right? Let's begin, the end of our journey With thoughts piling up on the hand you touched The future you believed in I'll protect it, so Why, why The conclusion I've come to is for a pure white princess (?) Tonight too, I'm dreaming Towards a world of only us Sorry, for going ahead of you
