2023-04-25 02:53:41 For those who are in interested reading along with the original Heavenly Delusion manga, this episode adapted the remainder of chapter 10 (the latter 18/32 pages), all of chapter 11, the first 23 pages of chapter 12 (23/28 pages), and the second half of chapter 13 (16/32 pages). This is equivalent to about ~2.88 chapters worth of manga adapted for episode 4. If anyone is confused to why Kiruko said they were out of ammo/battery after only firing one shot of the Kiru-Beam during the fight with the fish-like Man-Eater (and the gun’s battery had been presumably fully recharged at the inn in episode 2), this is due to the anime abridging the fight with the fish-like Man-Eater somewhat. In the manga’s version of the fight, after Kiruko first shot at the fish-like Man-Eater, their next strategy was to shoot the Man-Eater with a succession of rapid-fire shots (which used up the remaining 2-3 shots of the Kiru-Beam), which actually did result in the piercing of the Man-Eater’s protective film/suit of water and blew a hole through its side (though it wasn’t enough to take it out of commission). Basically the anime accidentally made one of its lines of dialogue seem like a plot-hole/inconsistency due to the cutting of that scene from the manga. And for anyone still confused, “Tomato Heaven” refers to the commune/farm that the marijuana was grown at and shipped from. It was called “Tomato Heaven” in the past because the first main crop the farm grew (before they diversified) was tomatoes. The facility where Tokio and the other weird kids are located at is still currently unnamed in the anime. In addition to the facility’s video surveillance cameras being unable to see Tokio and/or Kuku (for some reason) whenever the cameras were directed at them, those with an eye for detail may have noticed that the surveillance footage date (stamped over the lower-right-hand corner of the video footage) during this episode said t17/07/01, while back in episode 2 the surveillance footage date was t17/06/23. This evidence tells us that the facility most likely uses a YY/MM/DD dating format for its surveillance system, with “t17” likely being some type of unique calendar year dating system. Also if anyone is confused as to why Tokio and Kuku weren’t discovered, the alarm that went off was saying that there was an intruder inside “The Sanctum” (the room where The Director and the A.I./robot “Mina” were located in). Because the alarm went off, it actually locked-down access to “Incubator Room 1” (which is the room that Tokio and Kuku were in to see “the babies”), and that lock-down actually prevented the pudgy glasses-wearing facility staff guy from entering said Incubator Room and discovering Tokio still in it. Basically the alarm going off actually gave Tokio and Kuku time to escape without being detected by the staff. And if anyone needs a refresher on the facility kids’ ages, the approximate ages of Tokio, Shiro (the white-silver haired teen who was sent the nude photo), Mimihime (the subject of said photo), Taka (the super strong/durable kid), and Anzu (the black haired girl often seen with Taka) are all 14 years old. The approximate ages of Nanaki & Iwa (the two kissing girls), Kuku (the frog-like girl) and Tarao (the sick kid) are all 10 years old. And Kona’s (the kid who draws strange drawings) approximate age is 17 years old. And if anyone is interested in starting the manga after this season is finished (it is currently planned to adapt up to some part of tankōbon Volume 6 of the manga), I personally would still recommend starting the manga from the beginning regardless, as in addition to the standard cutting of extra dialogue and scenes from the anime for run-time and cinematic pacing, the chapter titles and cover pages of the manga also play a role in experiencing the foreshadowing of the story that the anime can’t quite replicate (due to the inherent difference in mediums). The mangaka of Heavenly Delusion, Masakazu Ishiguro (who is active on Twitter), their most well known previous work is “And Yet the Town Moves” (also known as Soremachi), which was serialized from 2005-2016. They have also done a number of other single volume manga and short stories collections. Ishiguro's has also stated that the major influences for the Heavenly Delusion series, include the works Akira, Armored Trooper Votoms, and an old Japanese science-fiction novel titled "Dogra Magra" that was written Kyūsaku Yumeno (who appears as a character in Bungo Stray Dogs) and published in 1935.

Buddy types his essays beforehand and refreshes the page every minute just to copy and paste it. I respect the passion bro

I wanted to troll, but Ive been realty enjoying these reads bro! keep it up

Mari

I need to figure out what’s going on because I’m confused as fuck about everything that involves them kids at that place

Erica Collins

I can't get myself to read allat but I respect the dedication! The fact that u take the time to inform people...you're a walking W

Lawlach

if anyone, if anyone, in addition, if anyone, if anyone

LelaniG

Sooo did they not think it was important to teach these kids anything about puberty? They're gonna be smashing in the hallway at this rate

Crab Crab

I’m pretty sure Tokio is a girl btw.

Jaime Adam

Tokio is a girl lol

MWS

When they figure out Tokio is a girl…

Lash

im pretty sure Tokio is a girl. and she definitely does not have the ability to turn invisible, someone is literally tampering with the footage. im prettier sure its that A.I thing because when the alarm went off it said an intruder is in the sanctum even tho Tokio and Kuku were in the incubator.

Devin B

The kids with the same face both have different names so I doubt they're the same person.

Theo Vorster

Also if it was just Tokio being invisible, the little wall-crawling robot she was perching on to go up would have still been visible on the camera. And Kuku who was still peering out and holding the vent grate open when Tokio was going up the wall should have appeared in the camera footage too. This is definitely a case of the entire footage image being manipulated/edited.

LelaniG

Thank you because I watched it and I'm like I'm 99% sure she's a girl, just a little flat chested is all

KS Neelesh

Btw the best way to figure out if tokio is a girl or not are the eyes. Shes got more female type eyes especially cuz of the longer eyelashes. Maru and tokio dont have the same eye. your supposed to get confused as whether she is a girl or boy.

KeYo

yeah i picked up on tokio being a girl lol. i think the mother bot thing is tampering with the system to save her children. hina i think was her name? she tampered with the cameras im guessing and also when he was about to get caught another alarm was activated to her room instead of to tokio sooooo yeah mother bot dont want anybody messing with her children lol

Cameron Robinson

I think the boot print on the wall and baby knowing her name will mean Tokio is getting in trouble next episode. I think it will also expose that something is fucking with the cameras since they will know Tokio was there but won’t see the footage.

danial javady

Pretty sure Tokio is a girl.

Theo Vorster

To be fair the series has been deliberately presenting Tokio's gender/sex as ambiguous/vague (and definitely intended for the audience to initially assume that Tokio is a boy). This is one of those things where the intentional ambiguity it is more obvious in Japanese, as Tokio (and many of the facility kids in general) refer to themselves with the Japanese first-person pronoun "boku", which is a typical masculine pronoun that boys and young men largely use. And Tokio is addressed as "Tokio-kun", the "kun" honorific in Japanese, while not used exclusively for males, is viewed as a more masculine honorific than "san" and "chan". Because the manga didn't have voice acting, it was easier for the story to initially lead the audience in assuming Tokio was a boy for a couple of volumes, but the anime has a bigger challenge in doing that due to the voice acting being present.

Fooni

Im not trying to pile on, and Im being serious. I thought everyone knew Tokio was a girl

Theo Vorster

The facility dates in the video camera footage are presented in YY/MM/DD format though (that's the standard format for Japan), with the year spot being this ill-defined "t17" in all of them (it's not meant to stand for 2017 to be clear). So while the months and the days of the months can be determined for the facility narrative, the year is still meant to be unknown to the audience at this point in the story.

Guns

facts that appeared in this episode from what i remember so far yall might have missed: 1. about the nude that was sent to the boy, the picture was actually sent by the girl's phone, thats why he asked her about a message being sent this episode. so someone else with direct control of the system may have taken the photo and sent it to him to trigger sexual desire. (this also might explain the two girls kissing all the time, they might have been earlier victims to some exposure to explicit content) 2. the camera shouldve seen the vent open and froppy girl sticking out of it when tokio was ascending up towards it, so the camera itself seemed to have been completely temptered with. i thought it was her power at first too until we see the fat adult about to go to a room THEY are in but interrupted right as he was about to open the door meaning someone is 100% behind the scenes controlling these things. (another thing to note is that the froppy girl mustve at some point been led to or just gotten curious about a vent she could climb up to and saw the babies without being seen by the cameras by herself anyways.)

Hasnain Khan

Yehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Joshua Burns

I think the one in the facility is a girl and maru is a boy

Theo Vorster

The series actually intends for the audience to initially assume Tokio is a boy (or at least be unsure of Tokio's gender), the misleading is just more obvious in Japanese due to how first-person pronouns and honorifics work (and even more so in the manga, which didn't have voice acting).

Steve

something thats bugging me between the Manga and the show *No spoilers btw* is the changes in dialogue and the removal of some scenes, or just altering them entirely, it doesn't really make sense other than censorship, which is really a bummer.

Devin B

Aside from the fact that Tokio is a girl and Maru is a boy they both have different names so that should've told you they weren't the same person.

Nathan

am i slow or are they slow, cause i thought tokio was a girl this whole time but they all keep saying him?

alex amyot

this is some made in abyss level of bullshit

Theo Vorster

It's more likely for episode run-time and production time and resources limitations than "censorship". And the dialogue of the translated subtitles and the official translation of the manga will always have slight differences in English, even if the Japanese dialogue is identical, as no two different translators are going to be 100% identical in how they translate the same material.

2023-04-25 03:51:16 see i thought tokio was a girl until yall's discussions had me thinking it was maru and how it could be him from the future but i was like they look around the same age for maru to be tokio in the future and tokio's voice is so different from maru's idek if this makes sense 😭

Yall also missed that some anonymous person sent that kid the picture of that girl naked.

Theo Vorster

Tokio is a girl, but the audience is supposed to initially assume that Tokio is a boy (the misleading is more obvious in the Japanese language too) for like another episode or two, it's just harder to do so with anime (due to voice acting) compared to the manga.

2023-04-25 03:59:24 Here's my theory. Mina, the pregnant looking robot is the one messing with the cameras because when the lady in the wheelchair questioned her about the intruder alert & if she knew anything about it because that place is apparently part of her body, Mina basically avoided answering it by asking another question implying that she couldn't which I think is cap I also think she's the one giving birth to those babies

Spriggz

Out of all the traps they've seen, I'm surprised none of them thought Tokio is a girl lol. She always seemed feminine to me, and I'll keep believing so until confirmed otherwise.

Just Chilline

maybe im wrong, but I think Tokio might be a girl from the way she was animated in this episode

Garlic

OK so heres my theory: Tokio has the same ability as maru (maru touch) because of the scene where they almost touched. I feel like they made a special point of the alarm interrupting them because if they did touch the baby would have died. Bringing me to my next theory is that thems are little man-eaters, and when the baby that saw tokio gets let loose hes gonna run into maru and mistake the two for each other because they have the same face

Chelsea Avila

What if that girl from the outside that died from the disease escaped from the facility and told Kiriko and Maru to go find them since she knew it existed. She could've died from experimentarion and didn't get treatment for it.

camille

I believe Tokio is a girl. What im confused on is how they weren't picked up on camera. Is it an ability Tokio has or is it the "baby" that was helping them out? Is this disease something that was wide spread or something only gotten at the facility? If so, that can be the reason why she said find heaven and look for a face that looks like yours; because she already knew Tokio. This episode just left me with so many questions.

ThatOneGuy

So am I the only one finding it weird that the frog like girl could stick to things like the fish , and Kona gived her that specific drawing as well .

Kenisha & Kim

its pretty obvious tokio is a girl its funny tht they cant tell i dont blame them tho cuz listen some of these animes be confusing

Jake Thompson

I think those "babies" might imprint on the students and become clones of them or man eater versions that we see during Maru's story.

NecDW4

Yeah, its about the only thing that makes sense with what info we got. At first i thought the girl just used a camera timer to take her own picture to send it to the dude, but i could see the computer doing that as a way to get them to start thinking about things the scientists might not want them thinkin about.

Max Stone

I was kinda mad at first when I found out Tokio was a girl. I was looking forward to seeing a cute little LGBTQ relationship between what I thought was "him" at the time and Kona

NecDW4

Like, the second they gave her eyelashes a bit of extra attention it was obvious.

NecDW4

Yeah, anime just cant help goin hard on girls eyelashes. It was what gave it away for me when Dororo was first airing too.

Drake Rage

To add to the opening discussion, I think the kids themselves have abilities, like we saw some kids have superhuman athleticism, and the kid who fell like half a mile and got up like it was nothing. Also the anime started with that one girl saying "we will have a quiz today, I can feel it" and it happened, she also said "a girl and a boy, who looks like you, will fall in here and take us away" she said something like that. So she has some kind of premonition/psychic abilities. Then the kid doing drawings of monsters and stuff he drew turning out to exist in the real world makes him some type of psychic too. Love dark mysteries like this. I agree with Sheera more on not being different timelines because the girl at the facility said there would be "a boy with your face will come and take us away," and the boy outside saying he has to find a boy who has his face, so both sides have that goal of reaching each other. It could still be an elaborate plot with separate timelines but the info from the anime so far makes it seem like its the same timeline. Bruh the cameras are clearly being manipulated, they woulda seen the girl and the shutters being opened and closed even if the boy was invisible, and the boy being invisible doesn't make sense either cause the girl could see him the whole time. Roshi thinking this is Bungo Stray Dogs and the kid got that "Perfect Crime" ability that deletes camera footage of him, lmao.

Uni

I understood that from the very first epsiode Tokio is a girl based on the eyelashes and how they been acting. I've seen not one boy who acts like how Tokio does. Man anime these days make hard for some people lol

ShaquanVirse

I'm loving this show so much, top 3 anime this season

HIM

I PROMISE I'm not spoiled to this part lol 😂 I figured that Maybe the doctor Haruki's looking for was a scientist at the facility and he was the one aiding and influencing these changes in the facility. The omega robot makes sense, too, on some Nier automata shit. However, I feel the doctor plays a way bigger part knowing what I do know. Though, rest assured, that's purely a guess I know nothing more about the doctor than what has been shown already. Let's say, I know the story gets deeper and I honestly don't know just HOW deep it actually will go lol. Most of the spoilers I read have been covered in just 2 episodes 😆

Ebankz

I'm surprised not one of you questioned Tokio being a boy since someone said it in the beginning. Everything about Tokio is girly besides the haircut so I'm not sure how y'all were seeing a definitive boy rather than it at least being ambiguous.

Chocobo

TOKIO IS A GIRL YALL. COME ON 😂

rickie woodson

the kid at the institute is very femme, maybe female. the kid in the outside world is clearly male. as similar in appearance they are, they are NOT 100% identical so not the same person. one or both are clones/grown at the institution, not the same exact person. also their personalities are different.

rickie woodson

TOLD YA! said it last episode: they grow the maneaters at that compound.

Mist

if im being obvious even im having a hard time telling ive got no clue if tokio a guy or girl, the show doing a great job so far

Max Stone

literally everyone else has said this too but ill try not to

HIM

Ah, you're just the first I saw, but yeah. Mystery be damned, right? Lol

Alellion

My initial thought was that Tokio was a girl, but I went back and checked: the staff specifically addressed 'him' as Tokio-kun (i.e. masculine suffix). It's either a gay guy, or they've intentionally made it confusing.

Syncere Mathis

How? I thought it was pretty obvious that tokio is a tomboy also other ppl are already commented that

Alellion

I get the distinct impression they aren't expected to be alive long enough for that to matter really, lol.

Alellion

@Theo Vorster Ty for the validation lol. I initially thought it was girl due to the eyelashes + mannerisms but then the director literally calls her Tokio-kun in ep.1 (2? idr) and figured it was just an "anime making an intentionally confusing character again" situation.

yoongi

when i saw the babies i was like yup their all clones my original theory is that the main kids at the school switch memories with the 2 outside of that facility..i feel like their not family or related that way idk lol

MT

How’d they get on the invisibility thing? That pregnant AI thing was clearly looping the video cameras and when some dude was about to enter the nursery or whatever it sounded the alarm to draw him away

HollowedSlayer

I was thinking that since the kids at this facility seem to have otherworldly powers, that maybe Tokio has the ability to camouflage or something.

Syncere Mathis

well to the person who deleted there comment 😂 I'm sry out of all the comments u saw u picked mines

Ayoni Folarin

its left ambiguous up till a certain point for a reason so thanks for that :l

sotonye ogan

Why the character designer/author making it so damn hard to know who a girl or a boy lmao

Theo Vorster

It’s intentional on the mangaka’s part and connects to the themes of the story.

Skebaba

The T likely refers to the Era, as Japanese OFFICIAL calendars use First Letter of Era (rn it's Reiwa Era in Japan, each Era beginning when the next Emperor succeeds the prior one. So rn it would be R5 calender wise since Naruhito has been in power for 5 years by now), then from 1 to X amount depending on the last succession's date. Someone posted this on Reddit, but apparently by eyeballing it, the last time an Era started w/ a T was over 100 years ago, so we don't rly know when this is set in cuz it obviously can't be 100 years ago, and I'm not at all sure if the Imperial Household survived the Collapse anyway so no idea if they used the same format but based it on something else that starts w/ T (Heaven? It's in the title so Tengoku Nengo (lit. Heavenly Era) could be what it's based on, but IDK if it's actually literally that obvious tho)

Skebaba

Also her reaction to Kona also replying to her confession is girly af, I'd say. Like you literally see it in various anime the way you roll on the bed n make those noises w/ blush n shieet. I personally didn't think much of it before, but this episode made me actually realize it finally

Skebaba

I mean when footage is being fucked w/ in real-time, most obvious guess is a literal fucking AI, whose body the entire facility itself is essentially, since it should be easy af at those complexity levels of AIs for Mina to edit it in real-time w/ script alone. I assume the cameras like everything else is also directly hooked to her as well & not just the monitors in the Overseer room

The eyes make it clear Tokio ain't the same person as Maru however. Eyes are one of the easiest ways to discern gender for example, due to females having longer lashes than males (unless it's the bishy type of male, but clearly Tokio ain't ikemen enough to qualify for that, as can be seen from facial features), and the behavior at the end of having the confession being reciprocated is clearly seen in various animes, literally same kawaii noises & rolling around in bed while flushed is totally an Anime Girl(tm) moment

Skebaba

@Max Stone you still have the 2 10 year old girls tho, I guess

I suppose they are making super humans to repopulate the world, since as we see w/ Maru, they can fuck up Man-Eaters relatively easily (compared to normies I mean), especially when you put em into squads of 3-4 as is standard for squad structuring, a mix of utility & ranged & melee modified humans should be able to counter most types of Man-Eaters, excepting maybe some rly rare boss-level ones (assuming there are actually hierarchies like that & not just random variants of em w/o that much power difference between them besides biology-related stuff) which might need specific hardcounter abilities potentially, which I suppose could be possible if they repopulate eventually once the superhuman population reaches above X amount & RNG starts to modify their abilities for successive gens etc

@Alellion given that Tokio is a kid, it's not that weird to use "kun", it'd be weird to use "kun" for a young adult female however

t_t

dude i didnt catch that part! W comment

Cleven Anthony

Lmao well it worked 🤣🤣🤣 I was sure Tokio was a dude till I looked at the comments, damn 😭

Phroug

Isn't Tokio a girl? Why do you guys keep calling them a him?

Samuel XK

Wait, look at the dates in the camera monitor! Wasn't like 2034 or something like that? On the monitor shows "t17/07/01". So it can be 2017 or 2001. Must be in the past right?

The GoDKing 27

Ig we’ll just have to wait out this torture of waiting for the next episode

2023-04-25 22:13:34 That’s assuming the “t17” means 2017, which it might not. It could be something similar to the Imperial Year dating system, like how 2023 is “Reiwa 5”.

Because they think since Maru shares tokios face it means their genders match too. I guess it isn't stated every episode that tokio is a girl too tho

Lūthér Hölâyèãhmé

She literally has long eyelashes. If they put a pink bow on her head it would have been too obvious. I guess her short hair confused them?

what were they cooking? lol cuz if Tokio could’ve turned invincible then why didn’t Kuku get surprised if she turned invincible or tell her to turn if having abilities is normal to them. on the flip side of that, why would the facility allow to have a kid who turns invincible? that’s dangerous for them

"POLICE! HEEELP! POLICE! HEEEEELPP!" LMAO

yoongi

i mean i assumed tokio and the frog girl were invisible somehow bc how it didn't show them getting inside the camera clips were similar and when it cut to the next scene after tokio put hands up, it was a misdirect bc of that angle

I kinda wish Roshi had a moderator to delete spoilers in the Patreon comments.

2023-04-27 12:53:48 tbh these were hard to find out in manga, the anime makes it easier to piece things together. Like i'm caught up to the manga but just now after watching this episode I found out that the camera couldn't see Tokio. In the manga I thought they used the typical "almost got discovered but a bit late" moment.

im not even gonna try to theorize on this show even tho I think I got a good idea who Doc is and whats going on because the 60 IQ brainlets will cry spoilers again. But i like the little pieces they give.

I feel like the manga "forgets" to draw some panels, you know when you're reading some scanlation and the scans forgot to translate some panels so the story looks a bit out of context? I feel like that reading Heavenly Delusion

I could have sworn they called her a boy once, oh well, not that her gender really matters to the story rn (it may later, they’re clearly making it intentionally ambiguous), I think because Maru looks like her, people assume she’s a boy too

MayvaAva

She’s made to have the same face as maru, and since he’s a boy, and they haven’t said her gender (or referred to her with she/her or anything) explicitly, it makes sense to assume she’s also a boy, since clone theories, and every character wears the same outfit so it’s not like there’s any personalization there either, not like it really matters at this current part of the story
